Is Jason actually good with kids, or is that fanon?

Oh, that's definitely a canon thing. Jason has always cared deeply about children and taken great efforts to protect them. Hell, the first comic he showed up in as Red Hood showed him taking control of Gotham's drug dealers and telling them that if they dealed to kids, they'd be swiftly and painfully murdered.

Batman #635

It can be assumed that the reason Jason's so passionate about protecting children and teenagers is because he himself had a crappy childhood. He had to take care of his drug addict mom, then lived on the streets, and then became a child soldier who died before his sixteenth birthday. Jason knows what it's like to have your childhood taken away, so he does what he can to protect the kids of Gotham. It’s like what Selina said about Bruce that one time: “When you take away the cape and the cowl and the capital ‘T’ in ‘The Batman’...he’s all about protecting the innocent.” Bruce and Jason have this in common.

here’s some sick truths about Bruce Wayne and his relationship with his kids.

Most reliant on: Dick- he has the first born advantage plus, like Alfred, has wormed his way in to be almost indispensable in Bruce’s life. B would not be functioning well without Dick to kind of keep motivated and aware of the real world. Poor Dick is classic Eldest Daughter Syndrome.

Favorite child: Jason-  B took all the mistakes he learned with Dick and channeled them into Jason. He poured all his dad wisdom and love into Jay and, until the last bitter few weeks, had the most loving relationship. Lets Jay get away with most anything bc that’s his son.

Favorite Robin: Tim- Tim and B very quickly became a well oiled machine, B trusting Tim to keep up with him mentally and physically often giving the kid too hard tasks just expecting Tim to be able to do it. Which he did.

Easiest child: Cass- For all the B floundered and misunderstood/was misunderstood by his boys, Cass’s ability to read his intent in body language saved him. Also Cass’s desire to better herself and make up for past sins means her and B just get each other intuitively.

Favorite to be around: Damian- like Cass, Dami and B do have a lot in common and Dami’s more reserved habits, eagerness to please, absolute dry and cutting sense of humor means Bruce will seek out his youngest’s company more often than some of the others.

what was jason like when he first became robin?

okay so jason’s personality tends to fluctuate depending on the writer and the circumstances (such as dc trying to drill in the point that jason was a rebellious asshole even though he was actually Baby Supreme™) so i’m going to try and cover everything while also making it (hopefully) make sense, taking in all of the continuities and their varying canons.

1. we all know jason was a scrappy kid. he had a shitty dad, a drug addict mom, and spent a few years alone on the streets. this hardened jason and gave him a ferocity he didn’t have before. while it’s not hard to get past his exterior to the sweet kid within, it makes him bad at first impressions and is a great deal of the reason for why people reduce young jason todd to just a punk.

Bruce Wayne has a few tattoos, and the one on his middle finger is his favorite by far but also the worst done

Jason had asked Bruce if he could give him a stick-n-poke 6 months after moving in, and Bruce agreed. Jason decided Bruce’s middle finger was the best place to do so, and that a ‘J’ was going to be one Bruce’s skin forever.

Jason: “you can’t back out”

Bruce: [not caring] “why’s that?”

Jason: [using a regular pen to draw a ‘J’] “because punks back out”

Bruce: “why we can’t have that, can we?”

Jason: “nope”

Jason was concentrated on his work, trying his best to give a somewhat solid outline around his initial. That on its own took almost 40 minutes, and when Bruce would let a comment slide Jason would just reply, “you can’t rush art”

When Jason finally got to shading Bruce wanted to fall asleep at the table as Jason went pick by prick. He stopped himself from stealing a nap due to not trusting the child to not tattoo his face, or just putting a dick somewhere. So he waited.

Jason: “all done, do you like it?”

The J was wobbly, it’s looked a bit like it was done in sharpie, and the shading wasn’t consistent. Honest too god looked like Jason has taken a sharpie that needed to be thrown away and drew a J.

Bruce: “I love it.”

And he did.

The rich and mighty did not, often commenting in distaste for not only the location, but the poor execution. Bruce never let Jason hear the following. So in order to stop the unwanted attention Bruce decided to always wear a ring over his ink during formal events.

After Jason had died Bruce didn’t wear a ring over the artwork anymore, it reminded him that Jason was real, it gave him something that connected him to his child. He often found himself tracing the artwork whenever he let his mind drift. It was a painful reminder of what he lost, that it was Jason’s work. And that was enough.

Finger tattoos don’t last well, so over the course of a few years it out faded significantly, and the fact the tattoos wasn’t exactly high standards to start with didn’t help. But Bruce could never bring himself to get it filled in, could never get it touched up, or even redone like many had suggested. He couldn’t.

After Jason came back the tattoo mocked him, became a constant burning reminder of his failure, but it also served as a reminder of the unconditional love he held for Jason. Jason was his child, he trusted Jason with his life when he served as robin, Jason was strong willed, Jason was talented, Jason had loved Bruce at one point.

And Bruce loved Jason.

Bruce worked and worked at trying to fix his relationship with his lost son, with many set backs. Bruce may have been trying but he definitely wasn’t going to win any awards for compassion. After what seemed like war after war between the two finally started to settle, but on Jason’s terms not Bruce’s. They slowly became civil enough to stand in the same rooftop, and that evolved to today, both sitting at the kitchen table as Jason laid out everything he needed to give a tattoo

Jason: “it looks like shit now”

Bruce: “didn’t exactly look any better when I first got it either”

Jason: [snorts] “I can’t believe you let a kid tattoo you”

Bruce: “I haven’t exactly made any good decisions with kids according to my track record”

Jason: “you got that right. Lucky for you I’ve had a lot more practice, now hold still “

Follow up to my last post: I compiled a few instances of Jason having breakdowns in comics. It's not a complete list, but it's a diverse selection meant to show that this is a running theme.

In Three Jokers Jason has several flash backs to his death.

In Red Hood and The Outlaws Rebirth he has a vivid "hallucination" of him killing the joker and speaking to his younger self.

In Red Hood: Lost Days Jason breaks down crying because he found out Bruce replaced him.

In Batman:Urban Legends Jason completely stops his mission because he is hit with such strong emotions.

As a Bonus here's Damian talking about what makes Jason significant (from the newest Robins annual series). Each robin is know for one key characteristic and Jason's was his emotions.

As a person who hasn’t read a lot of Batman comics from before he had Robin, how accurate is The Batman in it’s portrayal of Bruce? Did Bruce really not start pretending to be more of a socialite playboy till Year Two?

Avatar

tl;dr "depends on the comics you read." Some people complaining about The Batman truly think that "Bruce Wayne the airheaded playboy" is the only public-facing persona Bruce has ever had and it shows, but Bruce as an affable socialite and playboy is a thing the comics have cultivated for decades. So Reeves' take, while somewhat based in comic canon as well, is definitely the minority interpretation.

The short answer is no, the "socialite playboy" persona is absolutely a core part of Bruce's early days as Batman, for a variety of reasons. Bruce doesn't always portray himself that way to the public, but he tends to adopt the playboy persona early on and (somewhat) shed it after being Batman for awhile rather than it being something he only adopts later on.

Stories like Year One and The Long Halloween are pretty careful to show Bruce cultivating that airheaded playboy persona, mostly because he thinks it's the best way to distract people from thinking he might be Batman. However, I will note that outside of some notable exceptions (Bruce does tend to seriously date women who are either wealthy socialites or morally ambiguous women who can kick his ass, after all), his "playboy persona" is largely a ruse even in his early days; most of his dating life is more along the lines of "take women out on a couple of dates, make sure they enjoy themselves, and then thank them for their time or pretend to run off with another woman."

But Bruce has been portrayed as a more serious, level-headed public figure before on several occasions. In fact, I'd say the majority of his modern public persona tends to be more along the lines of "not the absolute brightest bulb in the box, but a generally intelligent, well-meaning guy who happens to have an unfortunate playboy streak."

He is genuinely known for his philanthropy, generosity, and humanitarian work, and that's also something that Comics!Bruce is committed to since the very beginning (unlike Reeves' Bruce). However, I think the change to "recluse who really doesn't do much as Bruce Wayne" actually works really well in the movie because it's a change that's in conversation with decades of non-comics Batman media rather than the comics themselves. It's a plotpoint that is deliberately designed to explicitly address and ultimately subvert the tired Twitter hottake that Bruce should be "using his money to help clean up Gotham" instead of dressing up in a Bat suit and "beating up poor people."

Comic readers know Bruce is known for his philanthropy and unending fight against corruption as Bruce Wayne; we understand that he's committed himself to fighting crime both by day and by night. BTAS/DCAU fans generally know too. But for people who basically just interact with Batman through the big-budget movie space, the explicit conversation of "Bruce is rich, what's he doing for Gotham outside of Batman?" hasn't ever really been had outside of some charity galas and throwaway lines about funding community improvement initiatives.

Thus, I think if you're looking for a Bruce Wayne characterization that Rob's Bruce is patterned on and in conversation with, you should actually be looking at Michael Keaton's "secluded recluse" Bruce Wayne from Batman '89 rather than the comics. Keaton's Bruce is pretty clearly one of the bases for Pattinson's Bruce even if the two movies' perspectives on that type of characterization are radically different from each other (ie, Keaton!Bruce is a somewhat functional human being, he just generally chooses to not engage with the public).

Reeves' Bruce is a Bruce that is so wholly committed to Batman being the best way to live his life and achieve his goals that he's deliberately neglecting everything else: his father's philanthropic work, his status as Head of Wayne Enterprises, active oversight of the Gotham Renewal Fund, etc. He initially sees no use for the many mechanisms available to him to tackle the sources of crime rather than the symptoms of it, and it's a viewpoint that is directly challenged by the events of the film. It's pretty clear that by the end (especially after his realization that Falcone has only been able to use the Renewal Fund to fuel Gotham's corruption for the past 20+ years because of his refusal to oversee it and actively engage with the public), he's changed his mind and realized that it's the wrong way to approach things.

It's not particularly common for the comics to portray Bruce this way, but it does happen. Reeves took quite a bit of worldbuilding inspiration from Batman: Earth One, an AU modernization of Bruce's origins where Bruce is portrayed as a more serious figure who isn't particularly involved in public life; he's active as CEO of WE, but (to my knowledge, since I have yet to read it) the playboy persona isn't really a thing in that universe. So I would say that if you're looking for the answer to "is Reeves' Bruce actually based in comic canon?" the answer is technically yes, but you mainly have to look at AU/Elseworlds comics for that interpretation, not mainverse canon.

I know this is probably blasphemy but what if Alfred’s cooking isn't really all that good?

Think about it, there was probably more staff around when the Waynes were still alive, including a cook, so cooking was most likely not one of Alfred's tasks. Then after Martha and Thomas were gone and he was the only one left to look after Bruce Alfred had to take care of everything around the Manor, including things he had no clue about - like cooking.

In the beginning he went with easy to prepare meals, but that's no way to raise a child, so he started to branch out into real cooking and while the results got better over the years, the food is still far from Michelin star quality.

BUT in Bruce's eyes Alfred’s cooking will forever be the best - it represents afternoons spent chopping vegetables together and talking over the dinner table, trying out new recipes and laughing for the first time after his parents died when Alfred chased him with batter covered hands through the kitchen.

For Bruce Alfred’s cooking is his childhood, one of the few good parts of it he had, and so nothing will ever surpass it.

And like a good family tradition, he passes that appreciation on to his children once they come into his life.

So what I'm saying is maybe Alfred’s cooking isn't world-class, but for his family it will forever be associated with being home and safe and happy, and that's what makes it the best tasting food on the whole planet.

Thinking about how Dick was the first Robin, but Jason was the first legacy Robin.

Like, Jason was the first one who had to figure out how to be a hero in a hand-me-down cape. Jason was the first one who had to figure out who he wanted to be while wearing another boy's mask. He had to forge his own identity, while outwardly presenting as someone else, and I don't think he gets enough credit for being number two.

We see him struggle with this almost immediately when he puts the suit on in Batman #368.

Bruce is trying to be a good dad, but his reassurances are like a band-aid over a bullet hole. He does not fully understand or appreciate the unique situation that Jason is in. It is not the anonymity that's troubling him. It is the fact that there's already a secret name tied to Robin, and it's not his.

There's a complex sort of three-fold identity at play here (Jason is Robin. Yes, the real Robin, but no, not that Robin.) and it is something that neither Bruce nor Dick have ever had to deal with before.

For the most part he suffers in silence; seeing Dick move on and blossom into Nightwing definitely helps, and Jason's insecurities are sort of put on the back burner. I don't think he had the time or the space to really process them, but whatever.

(It's not like repressed emotions will combine with unimaginable trauma to lead him down a path of self-destruction and warp his relationship with his family for the rest of his life, right?)

Despite the unacknowledged complexities of his situation, Jason LOVES being Robin. He loves helping people, and he loves making his dad proud, and eventually he finds joy in having this weird second-hand persona.

Batman #385

Jason finds power in calling upon the reputation of his predecessor, drawing inspiration from the thing he initially feared, and that is magic.

He’s just cool and important, okay??? He was Robin and he fucking mattered.

Good morning, please have this thought:

Due to shenanigans that Clark cannot possibly comprehend, let alone understand, Bruce has somehow talked him into being Batman for a week.

He comes out of the experience bewildered and wondering how in fuck's sake Batman ever held onto his no-kill rule.

And then he runs into Dick Grayson who is staring at him with starry eyes.

Clark is ten seconds away from a meltdown can you please help him Bruce -

No, help does not mean lean against the doorframe sipping coffee and hiding laughter dammit Bruce HELP HIM -

Clark thinks it's over.

And then he fills in when Jason is Robin. Ten minutes in, and Clark is infinitely fonder of this Robin. Robin gives him magic? God, so cute.

Tim is entirely too smart and sleep deprived and scares him, but at least he puts his brain towards being a menace on main towards Luther.

Stephanie is a national treasure, he thinks, and they join forces for sassing sessions against Bruce.

Damien... He's totally not helping this kid sneak in a tiger, Bruce, just look the other way.

This is perfect

Thank you for the thought

I am enjoying it immensely

I will probably spend a significant portion of the day ruminating on this idea

please make a post about bruce wayne being autistic

I already have, for several years now I've been saying that Bruce Wayne is neurodivergent and most likely autistic, but I don't think I've made a very detailed post specifically here on Tumblr so... Might as well?

With the arrival of "The Batman" and Pattison giving us a Bruce Wayne portrayal that most definitely reflects a neurodivergent Batman the way he should be, more and more people are starting to adhere to the autistic!Bruce headcanon and I'm all for it but many still argue that it's not canon to the comics, I beg to differ (and I'm hyper focused right now) so let's make a post about it, shall we?

Proof that canon Bruce is very likely in the autistic spectrum

For starters, Bruce canonically has PTSD (and anger issues that come with it) and OCD. He also suffers from acute anxiety and depression but none of this takes away from the fact that he's been autistic-coded for decades and not just in the comics, in fact, I'm going to be talking about the character across several types of media.

Also, remember that autism is a spectrum and every person is different.

Let's start with this actual panel from "Batman: The Imposter", it's a recent (2021-2022) black label comic but it's relevant since it features the point of view of a therapist/psychiatrist on young Bruce.

I’ve seen a couple people say that Dick is demisexual. I was just wondering if it is actually true and if yes, can you one or two examples/comics, thank you. Also, I love your metas and think it’s really cool that you put so much effort into them, it’s really helpful for new comic readers wanting to get into Dick Grayson/Nightwing :)

If we are looking at Pre-52, I’d say that there is a lot of evidence that Dick is demisexual. There are several instances where Dick pretty much explicitly states as much:

Action Comics Weekly #614
Huntress/Nightwing #3
Outsiders #12

There isn’t anything wrong with casual sex to make that clear. But Dick is pretty consistently uninterested and uncomfortable with that sort of approach. He doesn’t tend to pursue relationships in that way...he actually lowkey really enjoys being romanced a bit.

New Teen Titans (1988) #71

Wake up people! He wants to be wooed a little...

I mean, in recent years, DC has become more concerned with pushing Dick as a womanizer in order to capitalize on his sex appeal, so...whatever. But Dick’s relationships used to be all about emotional connection and dedication. And I think with their approach, DC really misses the fact that a huge part of Dick’s charm was how sincere he was with his love.
