I am genuinely sorry to bother you with this, but I am hoping you can help settle what is becoming a very unpleasant multi-fandom argument-is Crowley canonically gay? Some people feel he is, some people feel he may be bi/pan, but there is quite a lot of nastiness floating around Tumblr aimed at people who wish to write fan fic about Crowley having romantic interest in people other than Aziraphale. Any insight you could offer into these characters would be much appreciated. You're a treasure.
I suspect that I’m about to step into something I would be wisest to keep well away from. But what the hell, it’s that time between Christmas and New Year’s. And nobody’s yelled at me over the internet since I said that the TV Aziraphale doesn’t use a cell phone. *
Canonically, which is to say using the text in the book, you don’t get any description of Crowley’s sex life. The only thing the book says is “angels are sexless unless they specifically make an effort”. You can infer, and (more to the point) you can imagine, and lots of people have chosen, not unreasonably, to ship him with Aziraphale, but you are still Making Stuff Up. It could be Making Stuff Up that happens between paragraphs, or Making Stuff Up that isn’t mentioned at all, but it’s still Making Stuff Up.** (And using the kind of eagle-eyed textual analysis that Bible scholars used to decide exactly what a piece of four thousand year old verse definitely meant also counts here as Making Stuff Up.)
Which is the fun of fanfiction, and part of the tradition of fanfiction. As is, I’m afraid, grumbling at people who do not see that your ship is the only true ship, and choose to ship anyone else with anyone else.
If anyone decides that The Relationships in Their Fanfiction Are the Only True Fanfiction, it seems to me they are missing the point. The point is Fanfiction exists so that you can imagine, enjoy and fill in the gaps. The point is that you can change things and have fun with them. And the stories are absolutely true… for you.
The TV series gets deeper into Crowley and Aziraphale’s relationship. It’ll be canonical for the TV series, and not canonical for the book.***
If I were to Pronounce on things that are not explicitly stated in the book, I still wouldn’t be telling you if Crowley was Canonically Gay. I would be telling you what I think, because it’s not canon unless it’s in the book. It won’t be TV canon unless it’s on the screen.
So, do not worry what other people think, and do not worry about what they say. These are not things on which people can be right or wrong, or on which anything can be “settled”.
Make fun fanfiction. Enjoy yourself. Make things up. Share them. That’s the point.
*People would only bother him on it. And if anyone gave him one as a present, it would be still be in its box, on the same shelf as the still-unboxed Kindle.
**Which was what Terry and I did when we wrote the book. And what I had to do for the TV scripts when I needed to take the story into places the book hadn’t covered.
***They don’t contradict each other, but there is territory covered by the TV series that isn’t covered by the book, particularly about Crowley and Aziraphale in bygone years. Also the Present Day in the book is probably the early 1990s, and the Present Day in the TV series is 2019ish, although 11 years ago in the book wasn’t particularly 1978, and 11 years ago on TV is post-ubiquitous cellphones but pre-smartphones.

Good survival tips
these are some language tips that i follow(ed) when i learn(ed) languages. currently, i am using these tips for two languages, so i hope they help all of you as well!
1. immerse yourself. know the culture really well! don’t let others calling you a “weeb” or “otaku” get in the way. i know it may be discouraging, but you’ve got to understand their culture to really understand what you’re learning. there are going to be different onomatopoeia words, conversational slang, words of endearment, etc. you’re not going to understand it through the textbook. rather, you’ll only understand it through hearing it and understanding it. witness the culture through
-movies/dramas/commercials in that language. -books in that language. -music. -conversations. (huh? refer to step 5.) -travel! -the alphabet
if you know how to read the language, you will be able to pick up on pronunciations. knowing how to speak properly is vital to your language learning, as you can only get better this way. listen to conversations and try to imitate the way they speak, the inflections they add, etc. if they roll their “r” and you cannot, practice and substitute. lots of people will add a soft “d” sound to their words where a rolled “r” is.
reading allows you to learn much more vocabulary (if you look it up). this is great for conversation!
2. speak. huh? how do you do that if no one speaks it around you? speak with yourself, literally. if you’re doing something, going somewhere, or thinking something, try translating your actions in that language. narrate everything you’re going in your language! this way, if you stumble on a word, you can look it up and use it in your sentence. you learn more vocabulary this way and also get familiar with the sentence structure and the grammar. if you speak to a pet, speak it in your learning language. or just have a conversation with yourself. stand in front of the mirror and pretend that you’re talking to someone. answer any questions you ask the mirror so you get comfortable with hearing the answers.
3. practice. regular practice is how you get better. read a word, define words, write them, and say them out loud. this is the best way to remember what you’re learning. associating sounds with pictures (alphabet) and vice versa is the best way to remember, and practice is the only way you can do this. if you’re sitting on the bus or have idle time, think about what you learned and recap everything you know so far. reviewing your already learned knowledge is also a way of practice. practice with others, if you have co-learners or people who already know that certain language.
4. listen. listen to the language. this is not in movies or dramas, but in regular youtube videos of interviews. look for “interviews in ____” and listen to the way they talk. search for conversational videos and listen. you can learn the formal and informal ways of speech and any slang.
-download audio.
i have mp3 of lessons that I listen to. i literally learn on the go. if you travel, if you’re sitting with headphones in, start listening to the lesson. most lessons will repeat the word/phrase/concept more than once, so you usually remember the topic quickly. this is just like being in a class! take notes if you can so you can go back to them.
5. read conversations. what the hell does this mean!? type in “conversation transcripts in ____” and you will often get conversations with the sentences underneath that you can read along to. FIRST, listen to it without reading it and try to understand as much as you can. THEN, read the text, but keep the audio off. anything you might have missed from the audio will stick out. LASTLY, listen and read. this will match sounds with the words, which will make you remember so much easier! reading conversations will get you better at understanding and speaking!
6. share your knowledge. if you can teach it, you definitely know it! share what you know with people who are curious. explain the basics and translate everything, making sure you are 100% correct. or you can resort to explaining to yourself, which is just as good! explain what you have learned and go through any exceptions!
7. keep track. keeping track of what you have learned will let REVIEW be easier. you will be much more motivated when you see how much you have progressed. tracking your knowledge will remind you of how much more you have to learn, too. knowing what you know and knowing what you don’t know are really important! you can learn much more faster this way! use notebooks, blogs (like these) or little cards!
-separate what you have learned by topic. (colours, grammar, etc.) -keep track of phrases based on formality so that you can differentiate where to use what. -alphabets that you learn should be a separate category! especially for languages with lots and lots of letters/characters!
that’s about it! i’ve gotten lots of questions on how i’m good at languages. i practice with my family and myself, because I know that makes me much better! happy studying and good luck!
HELLO I JUST FOUND THE BEST FUCKING WEBSITE FOR WORKING ON CHARACTERS AND WORLD BUILDING YEET FUCKERS SEE YOU IN 8 YEARS
If you have been struggling with world building and finding a way to keep track of everything PLEASE GOD LOOK AT NOTEBOOK.AI
Notebook.ai has different categories for different things:
And then once you make something each category has different questions for you to answer about your world:
This website is literally a blessing
here’s a dragon ball z piece i did for fun recently. might turn it into a print for future shows. we’ll see! no villains in this one :)
And that’s just like, one of the hundreds/thousands of other sketchy things the site has going on in the background by just sitting on any of its web pages without an adblocker/scriptblocker
Yo, if you wanna use KissAnime, you gotta be able to protect yourself & your computer from its shadiness. This post is discouraging, but sadly, there aren’t any less shady alternatives (aside from the legal streaming sites, of course) Anyway, if you wanna use any streaming site, you should download these Chrome extensions:
Removes ads and adds functionality. Can never be too safe, right?
This extension is a lifesaver, seriously. Personally, I’ve never seen it used on Kiss, but it works a lot on other streaming sites. With uBlock, Essentials, and Pop Up Blocker, it’s very rare that I see ads.
As the name suggests, it blocks crypto miners. I can’t vouch for its reliability yet, as it hasn’t blocked anything for me atm.
I also use a tampermonkey script to block the “Are You Human?” thing. Pretty sure it’s on the Kissanime reddit (also, if you use Kiss a lot, browse that sub even more!! It’s really useful to know what the hell is going on the site before you risk your computer). Make sure to download Malwarebytes, too!
reblogging this again because this is a much better version than just saying “dont use kissanime”
All illegal streaming services do stuff like this, so instead of going somewhere else, learn how to protect yourself from malicious advertisements.
Good tools even if you don’t go on that specific site
The future is so fucking annoying, turn it off
Ancient Alphabets. Thedan Script - used extensively by Gardnerian Witches Runic Alphabets - they served for divinatory and ritual purposes, as well as the more practical use; there are three main types of Runes; Germanic, Scandinavian/Norse, and Anglo-Saxon and they each have any number of variations, depending on the region from which they originate Celtic and Pictish - early Celts and their priests, the Druids, had their own form of alphabet known as “Ogam Bethluisnion”, which was an extremely simple alphabet used more for carving into wood and stone, than for general writing, while Pictish artwork was later adopted by the Celts, especially throughout Ireland Ceremonial Magick Alphabets - “Passing the River”, “Malachim” and “Celestial” alphabets were used almost exclusively by ceremonial magicians
The effort that people must put into copying and pasting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ from the internet really goes against the ethos of the shoulder shrug.
No, no, my dudes! Just create a shortcut on your phone!
rebagel to save a life
People often say to me: “You draw like some kind of inhuman machine. If I eat your brain, will I gain your power?” The answer is yes, but there is another way. The key to precise drawing is building up muscle memory so that your arm/hand/fingers do the things you want them to do when you want them to do them. Teaching yourself to draw a straight line or to make sweet curves is just a matter of practice and there are some exercises you can do to help improve. If you’re going to be doodling in class or during meetings anyway, why not put that time to good use?
Calling all storytellers! This is real!!!
“Have you always wanted to be Pixar animator? Now that process is a tiny bit easier. The animation studio recently made a number of courses available on the Khan Academy website to help you start your journey - and they’re free.”
The group of courses are called “Pixar in a Box” and include short lessons on everything from character modeling and animation to using virtual cameras. Today, it added a new course into the mix: The Art of Storytelling.
The free course is an exploration into the storytelling process at Pixar. From the course description:
“What makes someone a good storyteller? Storytelling is something we all do naturally, starting at a young age, but there’s a difference between good storytelling and great storytelling. In this lesson you’ll hear from Pixar directors and story artists about how they got their start, what stories inspire them, and you’ll begin to think about what kinds of stories you might want to tell.”

CURRENT MOOD:
How do you balance writing minority characters with respect for their cultures? Do you ever feel there are certain situations or places you can't go to in a story because the gender or racial identity of a character is different from yours? Do you have any suggestions for writers who want to be respectful of those cultures/experiences, but also want to include a broad spectrum of people in their writing?
I received this question a while back and, I have to be honest, I avoided answering it, not because I didn’t want to, but because I worried that doing so could open me up to intense criticism. The freight train of frustrations with 2017 emblazoned on its side is smashing through a lot of preconceived notions about who we are and what we value as a society. Racial issues are a big part of that and it’s a heck of a lot easier to just steer clear than to engage them at all. I avoided this because it was easy.
So, my first piece of advice is:
Don’t do the easy thing.
Make the effort. Do the research. You have a responsibility to spend extra time trying to get it right because people are going to draw broad inferences from what you portray, especially if you include people who don’t get much representation in media at the moment.
This does not mean characters of other races/genders should be _flawless_. Remember what I just said about not doing the easy thing? Adding diversity into your story and having those characters separate themselves from the rest by being perfect or bland is not the way to engage readers or create drama. Make your characters well-rounded, interesting, and give them flaws while doing your best to steer clear of obvious and reductive stereotypes.
“Do your best” actually covers quite a bit of the process. Dig as deep as you can with the time you’ve got, be diligent about researching the culture, and, wherever possible, get direct sources of information so you’re not filtering it through other people’s expectations or biases while unconsciously adding your own.
Know that you will not be telling _the_ story about a particular race or gender, just _a_ story that includes aspects of their lives.
Wayward is my supernatural comic series about teenagers battling Japanese mythological monsters. It’s a story in Japan with Japanese mythology, but it’s also about myth as a whole and generational divide. It includes a lot of Japanese (and, later on, Irish) cultural elements, but the overall theme and its own internal fantasy-mythology makes it quite different from a historical record or broad message about Japan. I’m not a Japanese person telling any kind of definitive story about what it is to _be_ Japanese. I wouldn’t presume to do so.
Glitterbomb: The Fame Game is a horror-tragedy with a main character who is an African-American teenager. It includes aspects of her life as a black teen, but the broader themes are fame, failure, and the grotesque way Hollywood treats its talent. I’m not an African-American telling the definitive story about what it is to _be_ black in America. That’s not my place or something I’d feel comfortable with.
“Do your best” and “don’t do the easy thing” also means you may screw up. You have to accept that. Seriously. Any criticism you receive, however hurtful it may be in the moment, can also lead to learning more and doing better in the future. I believe it’s better to try and fail than not try at all. Stepping outside your comfort zone is always difficult and stressful, but out there is where exciting discoveries take place.
If you have the chance to engage your research directly, do it! Visit museums, attend cultural events, ask questions, learn. If you can travel to another country, go! Connect with people and discover their similarities and differences. Don’t treat it like a science experiment or grudging responsibility for “diversity check marks.” The rewards are numerous. Engage and enjoy the process. Open yourself up to new experiences and people who aren’t like yourself. Be kind. Make friends.
One of the most important traits in storytelling is “empathy.” Building empathy in your stories and creating emotional bonds between your characters and the audience is key to your success as a storyteller. Broaden your horizons because it’ll make you a better person and a better storyteller.
For artists who have problems with perspective (furniture etc.) in indoor scenes like me - there’s an online programm called roomsketcher where you can design a house/roon and snap pictures of it using different perspectives.
It’s got an almost endless range of furniture, doors, windows, stairs etc and is easy to use. In addition to that, you don’t have to install anything and if you create an account (which is free) you can save and return to your houses.
Examples (all done by me):
Here’s an example for how you can use it
Great find, thanks!
OMG HEAVEN!!
Bless you!!!!
