@dmitriackles

if that makes you comfy, you can call me goddess // she/her

Jensen shutting down Kelios trying to argue with him about a brohug. I love this song. (starts around 4:26 with question, takes a few minutes to turn up, as below the cut). I generally just ignore her, but I feel like the community needs to really have some relief in realizing just how in-hand J2 had this con, since some people got overly worried about her - the shirts, pressure, the question line flooding and the false staff pulling people out of lines this con, even before the panel confusion. Nah bro. J2 gave us gold to her face: the integrity of the writing room, the intentional distance of the last brohug, the narrative power of it, and a full on dead-ass eyeroll when she tried to correct them. The convention had a lot of low points due to a variety of stressers; fandom side attendance shift this year, everyone-side bad news bears on Wayward - it was a lot more sober and down to earth than most Jibs but this is definitely a portion of panel to remember. It gave incredibly validating insight of both the script, and acting choices, in partnership with what major meta authors have been saying all season, however subtly it may be. That question did not go how she thought it would, and it’s a full 4 minute display.

(Edit as per my lulztags several of my gifs de-giffed - tumblr does this no matter how I compress gifs lately, I think it’s my computer. Some of the freezeframes are themselves priceless. Just watch the video at the tagged times lmao.)

*puts on tinhat of dumpster pride* sometimes when i see jensen messing with misha it reminds me of a feisty sub tryna rile up their dom

Oh, Anon, I agree with you a whole hell of a lot!! And I like your hat!!

I actually just spent like an hour writing out a post about this but….I didn’t save my work and Tumblr crashed and lost it. I think we should all have a moment of silence because it had gifs and citations and all kinds of good meta stuff that I probably don’t have the patience to recreate. I’ll try, but I promise you it was more eloquent before.

First off, you’ll need to apply my standard disclaimer about how when we speculate about real people we are not claiming to know anything and doing it for our own entertainment and that it should never be brought up to the actors in question. Ever. We good? Good. Now, I’m also going to put my thoughts under a cut (although the damn thing doesn’t work on mobile) so that people who want to scroll easily past can do that.

Idk if this was made already (apologies if so) but I noticed Jensen has a peculiar way of unconsciously allowing himself to let on public displays of affection towards other men - in this case, Misha. And this impacts his performance as Dean.

Things we know for sure:

  • Jensen seems to always end up close to Misha, and one way or another finds himself touching Misha (more than he does other people he works with)
  • Misha is soft and tender towards Jensen (even if he tries to bro-slap Jen, it comes out as a lingering caress)
  • Jensen believes in a solid traditional concept of masculinity (perceptible by some comments like “real men do this/have this”, etc..)

I don’t intend to psychoanalyze Jensen or judge him for some of his core beliefs. I do think, however, that all metas in this world are not enough to fully understand Dean and Cas relationship if we don’t consider the dynamics between the actors who play them. In order to understand why Dean acts the way he does in certain situations, we can’t ignore Jensen’s personality, and his relationship with Misha. I’ve found some of the bro-slaps and rough manhandling a bit inappropriate for some of the emotionally charged scenes, and now I’m pretty sure they weren’t scripted at all. I always thought this was Jensen’s way of bro-ing up Dean and Cas’ relationship but I wasn’t aware how much of it was not deliberate/intentional.

Women are raised to be (more) at ease in what concerns developing intimacy with same gender friends. They’re not scolded or marginalized by saying “I love you’s” and openly showing affection towards one another. Masculinity, on the other hand, traditionally establishes itself by the rejection of all traits associated with the feminine. An anti-femininity, if you will. Femininity - traditionally - includes not only intimacy with other women but liking men. Involves allowing them to touch you in intimate ways (I know it sounds like a bunch of crap in 2017, but gender norms have been shaped and defined by these principles for centuries).

There’s a part of born-and-raised-in-Texas-Jensen that rejects the idea of having intimacy with other men. His knee-jerk reaction is “hell, nah, I gotta go”. It’s not even about sexuality, it’s about his idea of manhood, and gender boundaries. Here lies, I believe, the reason why we don’t see Dean being as physically affectionate towards Cas as it would seem natural in their story. Jensen sees Dean as the manliest man there is, in some ways he even admires and looks up to him - as a reference. What Jensen - thinks he - has control over, is the definition of said boundaries: Cas is Dean’s bro. He runs with this even though he knows it’s more complex than that. What Jensen can’t see, is how that mask - the boundaries, the effort, the whole thing - goes up in flames with a single off camera (and set) interaction with Misha.

Most men are raised to only seek intimacy with women, and they crave it with other men, with their friends. Once they feel their manhood is no longer being questioned all the time, once they settle down in a het relationship, have a bunch of kids and their social status is unquestionably secure, they start to allow themselves to experience small portions of intimacy with other men. And I mean, closeness, tenderness, gentleness in the touch. Allowing themselves to feel and be felt by their friend without having to school their facial expression, or recoil from their touch wondering what it looks like from the outside - without worrying about what people will think.

We sure enjoy the show he and Misha put up on every Cockles panel. The innuendos are fun, messy and liberating, but Jensen has shown, more often than not, to actually be drawn to Misha. His body language indicates he gravitates to Misha whenever he can, even if so ever slightly, he will turn towards Misha, look him in the eye, study his reaction after every comment, every remark. There are countless posts on here pointing out just how differently Jensen carries himself around Misha vs everyone else on the set. We can see it. What we don’t always see, so well, is Jensen’s inner struggle to reestablish boundaries with someone who keeps making him tearing them down - Misha. What I’m getting at is that, something as impersonal as a shoulder-slap is charged with meaning coming from Jensen. Dean doing it towards Cas, shows this is Jensen’s definition of love between men, of affection - matter of fact, as affectionate as he can bring himself to be in public. It says “I love him, and were he a she, I would kiss him on the cheek”.

We can’t fully understand Destiel and the feelings involved without looking into certain attitudes the actors (let) bleed out to the characters. The same way, some of the the teasing and - downright - filthy looks Dean gives Cas, actually result of Jensen teasing Misha during shooting. When Jensen allies with Jared and tries to make Misha break character by flirting with him, making R rated comments, sexual innuendos, etc… Which, by the way, is what I call - flirting. One thing is to shove a broom or whatever between Misha’s legs to make him break character like Jared is fond of, another entirely different is to sexually tease and frustrate Misha. Jensen knows the power (and I had to make an effort to not type “influence”) he has over Misha, and he likes it enough to keep using it. The real question is how much he gets off on this bizarre dynamic.

We should discuss more often about how when it comes to Dean and Cas, the writers do not script what we love to gif over here: the longing looks, the sexy tease, the checking out mode… Whereas, the distance between them is planed and set by marks on the floor to fit the camera angles, the mannerisms, facial expressions and looks are mostly Jensen and Misha.

What I find intriguing about the bro-slap is how it contrasts immensely with Jensen’s body language towards Misha. He wants to touch Misha. Whether in unscripted scenes or off camera, Jensen wants to touch him. No one is making him reach out to touch him every chance he gets, be it a shoulder/back/chest slap, a hand on his shoulder or back, putting his arm around him, or rubbing shoulders… it is obvious that Jensen craves that touch, that intimacy, even if (and probably, I’d say) he doesn’t realize it. So his brain offers him a way out, a coping mechanism to touch Misha in a way he’s comfortable with, he can touch him all he wants as long as he’s rough and manhandles him. Mainly when he’s hyper aware of thousands or even millions of eyes on them. I don’t believe for a minute Dean would bro-slap Cas in private, not at this stage, not with their story, I do believe those scenes are Jensen giving himself permission to have some men-on-men intimacy. Oddly enough, for such a careful actor, Jensen, sure knows how to school his body movements in public but can’t seem to be able to exercise control over his facial expressions, eyes, or his unruly eagerness when interacting with Misha.

Anonymous asked:

In the post about cockles, what was the thing that Jensen got fed up about with Sera? Thanks!

Hey Nonnie,

I’m thinking you mean this post from the vault with a compilation of Cockles moments through around 2014? I was so happy to see these again because I had legitimately forgotten about some of them in light of more recent events.

The gif from SDCC 2011 where Jensen is frustrated with Sera is from when the moderated asked her how much they could expect to see Castiel this season. Everyone at the table knows full well at that point that Cas dies, supposedly for good, in the first episode of the season. And they. are. pissed. It’s not just Jensen, though he’s a little more obvious about it. This ask actually sent me back to watching the full panel:

This is the link  and you can watch another version that’s lower in quality and focusing on the faces of 2 people at a time (mostly J2) in case you want facial reactions. The discussion of Cas starts with the second question–after they ask Jensen about directing his episode–and is about 3 minutes in. It’s painful. You can watch Misha try to figure out how to answer a question about playing a role that he no longer has and that (at this point) had no future on the show. He does an admirable job and even manages to seem somewhat upbeat. Not so J2.

The way everyone is sitting at this table isolates Sera and the body language from Jared and Jensen is openly hostile. Jensen especially pushes himself as far away as possible, defensively crosses his arms, leans away, doesn’t make any eye contact. Jared is also pissed and is functionally shielding Misha with his body while he does the first Cas question. Both of them are very protective and Jensen is more than a little hostile. They also both keep egging the audience on in their love for Cas/Misha, as when Jensen shouts “YEAH!” in affirmation of audience shrieks about the character. They want to show Sera what a piss poor decision it was to take Misha away from the fans…and from them. Whatever else you see happening these are some amazing friends.

The other end of the table is also deadly silent and still–nary a crack from Mark and Edlund’s body language has him screaming that he wishes he had no part in this…he practically puts his head in his hands. (Edlund did an incredible job of writing Cas and I can only imagine how much it hurt to see him being killed off after all that.)

To answer your initial question, his response is to Sera saying fundamentally nothing about whether the audience can expect to see Cas this season. Here’s the whole thing:

Moderator: Sera, it’s a loaded question but I have to ask: how much might we see Castiel in this season? What is his role in the season going on
Sera: You guys don’t really want to know how much you see Castiel or how much you see Misha. Well, Eric, I’m glad you asked. You know, we’ve been getting this question more or less every minute of every day since people started to hear about the change in Castiel. And the reality of this is that we want to tell you everything we can tell you about Misha because we love Misha as much as you do. And we want to tell you everything we can tell you about Castiel because we adore the character, as you do. But, I mean, you saw the cliffhanger; it was very cliffhanger-y. So, we want you to tune in and be anticipatory and we can’t say past what you know–which is that he’s going to be in the first couple of episodes. So, watch those and then bug us about it again and we’ll tell you a little more.
Jensen: Wow, that was really informative. Thank you.
Sera: I’m not answering the question but I’m explaining why I’m not answering the question. Does that help a little?

What’s remarkable about this clip is that Jensen is usually extraordinarily controlled in an interview situations (and, especially early on, also at cons) because he’s a professional who knows how to do PR and knows how vital it is. SDCC is the biggest publicity event they do in terms of numbers and profile. This is fucking it. And he’s shifting around in his chair, rocking it back, chugging water, rubbing his throat, grimacing, shaking his head, flashing the Dimples of Discontent, and actually rolling his eyes at the very end when she responds to what he said. Just. WOW.

Say it’s Cockles or not but that’s a very angry Jensen. And, again, he’s not the only one. Everyone at that table is pissed as fuck at Sera and you can tell because they will not help her out, pick up any slack, make any jokes. And Mark! Let’s talk about Mark. He responds to the question about his role in S7 by saying “Oh! I’m in Season 7! Yes!…Sera, what am I going to be doing?” and she says he’s being disingenuous and that he does know. And then (oh God, I cringe) he says in faux-sincerity, “It’s been an awful lot of fun to see what’s happened thus far and I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens this year.” Yeah, sounds nice. Until you realize that he means, subtextually, “I’m really looking forward to watching you crash and burn without Misha.” You can tell he doesn’t mean it in a happy way because no one cheers or claps.

The mood is somber. The whole panel is somber. The audience mood is dampened considerably from the start and the people on that panel aren’t having any fun with it. Jensen barely speaks at all and there’s almost none of the J2M2 clowning that usually goes into these things. And, remember, this is their biggest publicity event of the year. If it sets the tone then it’s little surprise that S7 almost got the show canceled.

I know that’s not your original ask, Nonnie, but I hope it’s ok that I took some time to delve into this. It’s far enough back that I wasn’t watching the show as it aired and that I haven’t reached into the archive for it. But actually in its weird, depressing way this whole panel is a love letter to Misha from everyone there who isn’t Sera. I tend also to focus on Jensen because he’s uncharacteristically, almost unprofessionally, upset but this time the group anger and protectiveness is what struck me. They are all united in hating this bad decision. And since we know it works out–Misha is back, Cas is back, the series continues now TWICE as long as when this panel happened–we can now marvel at it as a piece of fandom (and Cockles) history.
