I feel so... down whenever I want to watch queer or trans videos because I know in the back of my mind that none of the current large queer content creators' content or community is safe for people like me, intersex people.

I love their work otherwise, but it hurts badly to hear them toss around casual intersexism in their videos constantly when discussing queer and trans issues and nobody ever mentions it.

And because these are large, popular creators, nobody has ever listened when I've tried to ask they adjust their language. My dms go ignored or unseen and my public comments get drowned out by fans defending their intersexist comments. It's emotionally draining and exhausting, I just want to be included in my own community.

Genuinely asking if you are comfortable sharing, but what are some examples of "casual intersexism"? I'm honestly less read up on it than I should as someone who is intersex. Feel free to ignore this though should you not feel like it or anything.

Avatar
  • Stripping our intersex status when it fits an argument, ex. "Cis kids get put on hormones no problem while trans kids are denied them" (While they ignore that these are intersex children forced onto hormones)
  • Using us when it does fit an argument, but ignoring us entirely outside of that context, ex. Using intersex people existing to validate trans people existing, but never doing any sort of intersex advocacy unless it directly benefits/includes trans people as well
  • Erasing intersex issues while attempting to argue trans rights, ex. "No child is getting forced sex changes, that's not a thing that happens" (It doesn't happen to trans people, but happens all the time to intersex people)
  • Saying that sex is binary but gender isn't (Neither of them are binary)
  • Reducing intersex people down to cis people with disorders, ex. "Cis people without uteruses" or "Cis people with gynecomastia"
  • In addition to the above point, generally acting as if intersex people are not oppressed or as though we have it better than trans people do, often by calling us cis and disordered rather than intersex, ex. "Cis women with high testosterone levels are allowed in sports but trans people aren't" (Which is not even really a true statement) or by wishing that they were intersex or openly admitting to calling themselves intersex in their personal life in an attempt to avoid discrimination
  • Casual use of the word "Hermaphrodite"
  • Calling intersex animals trans/nonbinary
  • Ignoring blatant intersexism, never calling it out
  • Calling bills/laws or other issues which directly impact intersex people "trans bills" instead of "trans and intersex bills", such as the recent Kansas bill directly targeting intersex people being called a "trans bill" - making these bills aiming to exterminate intersex people solely about trans people and ignoring the bills' direct attack on intersex people
  • When these issues are brought up, saying that intersex people are "just caught in the crossfire/unfortunately affected by mistake but not intentionally, it's about trans people not intersex people"
  • Saying that intersex people are not LGBT/queer (Not all intersex people identify as queer, but we have always been part of queer community and should not be pushed out)
  • Reducing intersex people down to a statistic
  • Common misinformation, such as saying that being intersex means "being born with both parts"
  • Using afab and amab as equal to "perisex female" and "perisex male", ex. Talking as if all afabs are born with the same hormonal, genetic, or reproductive profiles

If you’re in or near Philly, the (vegan) bakery responsible for this mermaid Gritty cake is reopening their kitchen soon and will have cookies and bars available for pickup! If you are not in or near Philly, please enjoy this mermaid Gritty cake.

(I know the owners, am not vegan but still miss their incredible brownies desperately since they left DC, and have been super enjoying the increasingly weird Gritty cakes they post to Instagram.)

seriously though, they keep getting weirder

this post has been popping up on my activity feed again lately, so I thought I’d update it with a current link to their website and the latest in Gritty-themed cake design

also these are not Gritty-themed but I need you all to see them

im always thinkjng about that one time i was on register for like 4 hours straight and said over mic "someone blease take over register i am about to become the joker." and they came to relieve me faster thab ive ever seen anyone relieve me before

this has become a Thing at my place of work. I described this post to @ziracona and we started to look out for signs of one another “turning into the joker” and then started checking on everyone else we work with. The procedure is, if you notice that your coworker is turning into the Joker, you send them to the back to drink water/sit down/ take meds for a little while.

This not only spread to the rest of the staff, but the staff developed a complex sliding scale of jokerficiation to gauge how well one’s coworkers are and how likely they are to lose it on a member of the public. Possibilities include Alfred, Gordon, Catwoman, Harvey Dent, Big Bad Harv, Harley Quinn, etc with The Joker being the worst spot you’re gonna get in.

On one memorable day, @ziracona asked a coworker where she was on the jokerfication scale, and was told: ‘I’m in Ace chemical plant, looking down at the vats’ which naturally caused Zira to send this girl to the back to rest. Later, when this girl reappeared, Zira asked where they were now and the girl responded ‘now I’m swimming around in the chemicals’ Chilling

Anyway, I hope OP gets to know that they’ve affected a whole nonprofit workplace ecosystem and contributes to people trying to take care of their coworkers and having shorthand for it

If you send someone to rest you tell them to go to Arkham. I’ve told someone before “I’m sending you to Arkham because you’re the Joker right now and I don’t want to work with him.” 10/10.

The sliding scale helps to know how to deal w it. Because there are two factors: evil, and stress. If either reaches 100, you become the Joker, and if both reach 70 or above, you also become the Joker. Stress is physical pressure, and can be fixed by rest only, but had a faster recoup time. Evil is hatred of people you’re forced to interact with and can be fixed by taking a task that gets you away from them, but has a longer cooldown. So if someone says they’re at a Harvey Dent they need stress relieved immediately, or he’s turning into Two-Face, but a Mr. Freeze needs to get away from The Enemies immediately or he’s going to straight up become the Joker.

Hey, could you do me a favor?

Could you just RB this?

The little RB statistics chart is so pleasant and stimmy to look at and I want to see what it looks like when it gets really REALLY huge because it makes me think of some deep sea lifeform

I was gunna put this in the tags but it’s a lot. When i first started going through the process of getting a diagnosis, i was labelled with ODD. I immediately took issue with this, it seemed like an unfair diagnosis based entirely on the session the psychiatrist had with my parents (which mostly consisted of “my child is being really difficult on purpose”), and Hoo Boy when i tell you ODD immediately strips you of your ability to call out anyone on anything, that would be an understatement. I couldn’t even disagree or bring up my concerns about the validity of MY OWN DIAGNOSIS without it being labelled as oppositional defiance. Whenever i displayed any negative emotion the “treatments” did so much more harm than good. When you label someone as ‘defiant’ (ugh), when that word is put on their medical record, that person is never allowed to complain about anything again. Knowing that POC are disproportionately affected with this diagnosis makes me feel sick, i can only imagine what’s being swept under the rug as someone just being “defiant to authority”, not even just in the medical field but as justification for police brutality and mass incarceration. When i say medical racism kills people, this is what i mean.

this is so fucking important. reblog.

I have said it before and I will shout it from the mountaintops — ODD is a bullshit diagnosis.

I am a therapist who works with kids/teens and I have seen some genuinely really annoying and even dangerously oppositional kids in my time. The correct diagnosis in these cases is almost always;

(1) trauma (either untreated recent trauma or complex developmental trauma);

2) unaddressed or under-addressed ADHD and/or autism spectrum disorder;

(3) por que no los dos? Trauma and developmental disorders are often friends;

4) parents who are themselves so poorly dysregulated, or so anxiously controlling, that after 10 minutes or so I’m also feeling pretty damned oppositional.

Either the kid doesn’t trust authority for very good reasons, or they require such a high level of emotional arousal (due to developmental trauma or ADHD) that they feel called upon to start poking things and testing boundaries. And it’s a cinch they aren’t getting positive reinforcement when they DO do well.

Horribly, the original tweet and post above are far too correct: ODD is vastly overdiagnosed among poor/under-resourced children, and especially children of color. Like, the numbers are ludicrous. It is a very crucial tool of the school-to-prison pipeline.

If you are a practitioner and are ever tempted to diagnose ODD, FIRST look at the family system. Look at attachment wounds, look at familial boundaries, look at systemic and academic supports… You might want to take the kid outside to run around in green space and look at some ducks or weird bugs, because I suspect there is not enough enrichment in their enclosure. And it is a easy bet that they are almost certainly not getting enough movement to regulate themselves organically.

Can all the tumblr homosexuals agree to stop buying chick fil a. It's so depressing that across the board lgbt people and supporters are indifferent to chick fil a and feel fine buying it. Can we at least stigmatize it here

For those who actually like chick fil a sauce and refuse to boycott because of that:

It's ranch dressing, honey mustard, and barbecue sauce. Now free yourself

Fuck Chick-fil-A. That homophobic chicken isn't even that good, y'all are literally simping over chicken that tastes like it was made at a White cookout

Listen I am not going to name anyone specifically, but pattern makers need to talk to one (1) fat person before they can post their patterns online.

I am so sick of finding a cute pattern, getting all the supplies, checking my gage, and starting to knit, only to find that my sleeves are a foot longer than a normal human because the pattern maker just multiplied all their numbers by 10 when they sized it up. I can't believe I have to say this but, just because my ass is fat does not mean my arms go down to my knees???

If you are a fat knitter, please check out Lydia Morrow on Ravelry!

Her design focus first and foremost on the fit and comfort of plus size people, most offering optional bust AND hip shaping. She’s a neuro divergent and disabled creator and really relies on the sales of her patterns, which very generously offer a sliding pay scale for people who can’t afford the full price. Her pattern sales have dipped these last few months which is a terrible shame because she is doing so much great work to make accessible patterns for all.

I just watched my neighbor try to unload an actual wooden pallet that had to have been forklifted into the back of his insecurity pickup worth of fireworks.

Except that he does not have a forklift in his garage.

He does have so much sports memorabilia and cardboard boxes of unsold MLM Merchandise and patriotically themed camping gear and posters of women in bikinis and flags of suspect political organizations in his garage that there is only BARELY enough space for the fireworks and certainly none for his truck.

So he had to unload the individual boxes of recreational explosives from the back of his truck and stack them in the minimal space he had cleared by hand. This is a tedious and time-consuming process as this neighbor has purchased a wide variety of recreational and locally illegal explosives instead of many of just a few types, so the individual boxes are rather small.

He begins, and this is crucial to what happens next, by cutting apart the industrial-grade saran wrap his explosives dealer had so carefully wrapped his merchandise in, and discarded it unsecured on his lawn.

Under the new rules, homes that are not occupied for at least six months of the year are subject to a tax of one per cent of the property’s assessed value. The deadline to rent out empty dwellings was July 1.
Fazli said many of the people he has talked to are thinking of renting or selling their properties. He recently met with a woman who owns three empty properties in Vancouver — and says one of them is now listed for rent, another will be listed shortly and she is thinking of selling the third.
“This is a scenario of someone who is kind of in a panic now and needs to rent them out,” he said. […]

amazing

Why were they empty?

they’re meant to be investment properties, bought, left empty, and then sold a year or few later for huge profit as housing values continue to rise. it’s a massive part of the bc housing bubble, and why despite so much new construction it’s still so difficult to find rental housing

the fact that these landlords are panicking because they might have to actually use their housing properties as housing rather than finance capital is deeply funny

Avatar

It should be more than a 1% tax rate though. I want it to be 100%. Torture them.

So this article is from 2017. Wanna know how it worked?

According to the most recent census data, Vancouver’s percentage of homes that aren’t occupied by usual residents dropped from 8.2 per cent in 2016 (25,502) to seven per cent last year (23,011). That marks the first decline in two decades, and Vancouver’s Empty Homes Tax (EHT) is being credited as a primary influence. Introduced in 2017, Vancouver’s one per cent tax on empty dwellings — properties unoccupied for six months of the year — was implemented to encourage real estate investors to transition their properties to long-term rentals rather than having them sit unused. Although industry experts are divided on how much vacancy taxes contribute to increased housing supply, a report by the City of Vancouver found the number of vacant homes dropped from approximately 2,200 to 1,600 between 2017 and 2020 after the tax was introduced. Meanwhile, Vancouver’s EHT generated $33.6 million in revenue in 2018, $23.3 million in 2019, $27.9 million in 2020, and $20.8 million as of December 2021, helping to fund affordable housing initiatives in the city. After staring out at one per cent, the tax was increased to 1.25 per cent in 2019 and more than doubled to three per cent last year.

So, fuck yeah it helps! Reduced empty homes, they’re raising the tax, AND using it to help fund affordable housing.

It’s a start.

otw july 2 board meeting: what the hell was that

so the otw (@transformativeworks) board had their Q2 meeting yesterday, which was highly anticipated given everything that's gone down in the past months:

  • the @end-otw-racism campaign demanding action from otw on their own commitments made three years ago to better address racist harassment in otw and on ao3 (btw, support end otw racism's current campaign #Vote To End OTW Racism!)
  • recent revelations about how otw has mistreated its volunteers, regarding azarias and how the org reacted after the CSEM attacks on volunteers last year, as well as how the policy & abuse committee (PAC) is overworked and treated by the legal commitee overall (documented here)...
  • ...and ongoing mistreatment of chinese, chinese diaspora, and chinese-speaking volunteers, particularly regarding an incident last year that put volunteers in mainland china at risk, and the board's recent unilateral decision to close the otw weibo account without input from the weibo account leads or any chinese-speaking volunteers
  • the AI shit

and probably more that i've missed, honestly. so! this is my summary of the meeting, focusing mostly on the issues related to racism; i have screenshots of the whole meeting but will at this point only share those i find most relevant/interesting! alt text will be included for every screenshot in the image, not below it.

and hold on, because this is going to be LONG!
