For the individual who requested the “So You Want to Be a Delta?” Essay. It can be found here https://nueta.tripod.com/PROSPECT.HTM

Someone was kind enough to adapt it from Bee Jae’s website prior to her passing.

Hello,

My sponsor reached out to me about the organization(alpha kappa alpha) having a Line this fall. My gpa in undergrad is below the requirement, however my gpa in grad meets the requirements. Should i tell my sponsor or go through with the process? Do you know which gpa the organization will look at it?

Show your sponsor your transcripts and let her decide how to proceed.

I am trying to become a member of DST (grad chapter) and I texted the chapter president asking if there were any upcoming events. She stated some of the members will be at their sorority house watching a football game in a couple of weeks (one that is big in my city) but it will not be publicized to everyone. Was this an invite? I don’t want to just show up and it wasn’t LOL.

I would have just asked "Do you recommend that I attend?" --Uncle Rashid

Hello! I was initiated in a grad chapter, and unfortunately my chapter hasn’t really taught us much. They are big on anti-hazing, and I understand. However, I was bit disappointed that they haven’t taught some important basic things such as holding the sign correctly, doing the call, dos and donts. Has anyone experience this before that may have suggestions for a grad chapter neo?

You need to communicate your needs to your chapter president and/or intake coordinator. Explain that you want to be sure that you are representing them appropriately at all times, officially as well as casually/socially.

The grad org I want to pursue is donating towards a great cause. I want to donate but not sure if I should donate towards one of the members I “held small convo” who also holds a high position in the org. Or create my own fundraising page within the organization, and people could donate through me. Which in your opinion would be a better option?

Choose a member to donate through.

Hi! I recently started my online bachelors degree, and really want to be a Sigma Gamma Rho. How would I go about it? I don’t have any relatives who are Greek, I would be the first to start the tradition. Thank you!

If there is no chapter associated with the institution, I would contact either a regional director or the national office and ask if there are any undergraduate membership pathways for people attending your school. --Uncle Rashid

I recently attended a statewide virtual informational for a fraternity I've been interested in for the past 14 years. At the end of the meeting, they asked for our emails but I've heard nothing back from them. I stalked their social media and there's no recent updates beyond the informational flyer. Should I reach out to someone?

Yes.

Hello! I appreciate this page and the information given. I'm sure every organization is different, but about how much do you pay in dues?

I don't really feel comfortable answering this kind of question publicly.

Greetings! I hope the admin have had a great year thus far. I wanted to reach out regarding introducing yourself to interests who are pursuing the same org you are pursuing. Is it wise to make connections with people who see at events who aren’t members?

I think it's always wise to make friends of strangers.

Would it be a good idea to start attending events of newly charter chapters of your organization of interest if you want to be initiated? I’m asking this because I really don’t want my time wasted.

Time wasted? Wow.

Y’all!! When they say create relationships BELIEVE them! There is a rush for my COI in a few days and I was told weeks beforehand to get ready due to the existing relationships I had. Even when the rush flyer officially dropped, 2-3 members went out of their way to make sure I saw it! Form connections, attend events and doors WILL open!

I hope you made it! Let us know!

If you tried for a grad chapter and didn’t make it, would you move to another city for the chance to try again?

I sure the fuck would not.

I applied for alumnae chapter and I have a friend who also applied. I've been going to events, getting to know members and really making an effort for almost 2 years. I've invited her to come to events and do service but the Rush was the first event she came to and she was scrambling to do her service hours at the last possible minute. She even recently told me if she gets in, she won't pay dues, she just wants to be a member. I am wrong for being irritated.

Nope. I'd be irritated, too. But really, there's nothing that can be done. I hope you made it.

Hi Uncle Rashid... I just wanted to let you know that the words you said in a previous about membership has resonated with me. "Membership is about relationships and not built on chance" I have been following you for a few years and I was so upset I wasn't invited to the sorority I'm interested in back in 2019.

Fast forward some ladies I knew (who were prospects at the time) were invited to membership. One of the ladies invited me to an event and posted pics of us together and people I know were blowing me up to tell me she posted us on her social media page (the sorority also posted us on their page). The other girl told me to make sure I write her name when the sorority asks for membership referral at events. This was a win for me because I had never been invited to an event for this chapter. It was weird at first because the same girl I know who was granted membership invited me to an event.

I'm viewing things from a new perspective and I wanted to let you know that my way of thinking has changed and now I can see why the ladies was invited to membership and I was not. Showing up to an event is not enough or guaranteed membership. I will keep you posted on this journey, just wanted to thank you in advance for your hard but truthful advice about invitations. 😊

Thank you so much for this wonderful update. I am glad you are letting the lessons of life guide you on this journey.

Just received a denial letter from DST. Yes, I’m disappointed, this is the first line this particular grad chapter has had in 7 years. And I see the error in the wording on my community service letter🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️. I will definitely try again when the opportunity presents itself. I saw a friend at Rush and she got called for an interview! I am super excited for her! I know she’s got this and my time will come. I’m thankful for this blog and others like it, so thank you!

I'm sorry things didn't work out for you this time. :-(

Hi! My whole family is in one org but it’s not the org that speaks to me. I’ve tried bringing it up before and it went terribly. I held off a few years because of this but I want to pursue. I love my family but I know they’ll say I don’t love and appreciate them if I join a different org. Any advice? Do I pursue the org I want or should I do what will make them happy?

Oh, fuck the family! I let the family into my house, and you know what happened? The family fucked my husband. --Uncle Rashid

So I started my process the beginning of this month by going to an informational (where I filled out my application). A couple days later I was sent an invitation for membership and given some info on the next steps of MIP I have since done an interview and submitted multiple different things they asked for. It's been about three weeks and I haven't heard anything. (side note: they also had a second informational about a week after the one I went to and we also had spring break) No call, email, or rejection, etc. I just wanted to know if I should continue thinking positively because maybe they're trying to finish processing the information they received from the girls that came to the second informational, or if I should move on because maybe they decided not to continue pursuing me?

You should contact the person who sent you the invitation for membership.

I go to a small school (less than 900) where as a student leader I attended my friend's events (she's in a sorority I have no interest in). I was wonder if attending their events can get me blackballed from doing what I wanna do (crossing another sorority).

It shouldn't.

i am in dire need of help. i submitted an application to an org but i withdrew from the process in the early stages simply because i knew in my heart it wasn’t the org for me. now i am trying to another org, recently attended events, got to know a couple of members. should i be worried about my previous application?

Concerned? Perhaps. Tell the truth if asked. Worried? I don't know. I find that there's never any use in worrying. --Uncle Rashid ---back like I never left
