Just Here To Write

@distressedherbalist

Garbage fire. Writer. Flower expert (sort of). I get too invested in fictional characters ok? Cool Big Sis.

Do any of you know about that one painting with Aphrodite being born out of lava with a black swan by her side or did i completely hallucinate that? Been searching for a while but i can’t find it for shit.

I tried googling that description but no luck either, anyone might know what painting this might be (or if it does exist? cause it sounds sick lol)

It took a bit of googling magic, but I think I’ve found it.

This is “Kindled” by Laura K. Cannon, which is part of her portfolio that can be found here: http://navate.com/2wk6im1sartc92iwza7il07bxq2mk5

Is this what you were looking for? @sakyubaso

I’m in love.

Y'all I’m-

“This went kinda viral on tumblr and people are arguing whether it’s a painting of Aphrodite. It’s not. If she must be a goddess, I think she’d be Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire.

But it doesn’t depict anyone specifically. After some soul-searching I realize that, while I wasn’t thinking about it at the time, it’s a painting about battling depression. I live with MDD so the idea of emerging from the depths is a powerful thing for me.

Is she being born from the lava, or is she climbing out of Hell? I think it’s both.”

so. not Aphrodite, but someone beautiful nonetheless

I know this makes the anti-voting fandom big mad but this is only happening because Murphy was re-elected by a thin margin in November 2021, bucking a 40 year trend of Democratic governors losing re-election in NJ, because enough people voted for him

Remember, people who have a victim complex about voting:

I understand the appeal of wanting every adult hero to instinctively adopt teenage Peter Parker, but can it really beat the hilarity of acknowledging that at 15 Peter was 5'10", unusually buff, went by a moniker with Man in it, wore a creepy full face mask, and had a tightly guarded secret identity and probably a Queens accent thick enough to have come out of a jello mold, and adult heroes reasonably responded to him by going, “Wow, this grown man is an immature asshole for no reason.”

Way funnier to me than adult heroes finding out Peter is a teenager and becoming Concerned is the idea of adult heroes Retroactively finding out Peter Was a teenager because he admits to being like. 22 and they’re like “Hang on you’ve been doing this for like. Seven years.” and he’s like “Haha crazy right? Anyway it’s too late for you to yell at me about that because the statue of limitations on that lecture ran out when I turned 18”

YEAH this trope is instantly more tolerable if it’s fully adult Peter being like, *listen up whippersnappers because I’ve been around the block voice* “I’m thirty, and—” and Tony Stark, who vaguely assumed Spider-Man is maybe two years older than him because he just has that energy and hasn’t reassessed this for four presidential terms, is like, *drunkenly doing math* “You’re how many”

Okay but…them trying to talk about Old People Stuff with him, not realizing that he wasn’t alive to remember xyz thing happening, never used xyz technology bc he didn’t exist yet, not expecting him to agree with the fact that some ppl were saying songs they grew up to were oldies, etc

The thing about Peter Parker is that he was raised by senior citizens the way other heroes are raised by wolves. He has the body of an Olympic gymnast and the soul of a malcontented geriatric. This likely contributed to the perpetuation of the accidental ruse.

It’s when he channels Aunt May so hard he makes it sound like he was personally and immediately affected by McCarthyism that the time traveler fringe theory starts really picking up bets.

Pal, I JUST SAID he was raised by AUNT MAY.

Also not to get real on a ha ha comic post but the elderly are not your enemy. There are old progressives.

Peter has a lot of feelings about the woman that discovered DNA and he strikes me as the kind of person that thinks that distancing yourself from notable figures of history by using their last names is stupid, so he’s going to say something like, “Rosalind worked so fucking hard to have that work snatched from her,” immediately followed by, “I woulda thumped him good,” and inspiring Tony and Banner to frantically look through the 1930s and 40s yearbooks at King’s College and theorize which one was Spider-Man. Captain America tries reminiscing about the good ole days with him. Peter, for his part, has been absently agreeing and making vague “I’m listening” noises about the Rolling Stones and Elton John for the majority of his life, so adding baseball, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald to the list wasn’t that much of a stretch.

There are only like three genuinely funny additions on this, but this is one of them.

captain america pushing a get out the vote campaign: ‘spiderman did you vote’

spider’man’ at 16: uhhhh so about that

“I…can’t.” “I see. That’s why it’s so important to restore voting rights to felons.”

That’s made funnier by the fact that I feel like Steve’s natural assumption would be that Spiderman’s a non-citizen, so him jumping straight to felon is like, Peter just has such strong criminal vibes.

Steve: What’d you go in for?

Peter, panicking: Jaywalking!

Steve: This prison pipeline needs to stop.

We need kink at pride because “kink” isn’t just kink. “Kink” is:

  • That boy wearing jeans that are too tight
  • Your neighbors and their “friend” that lives with them
  • Having a beard and wearing a skirt
  • Wearing any kind of choker
  • Literally anything else they decide goes against the “norm”, and it can be literally anything. That is why we need kink at pride.

No we don't. Respect ppls boundaries. If respect isn't normal anymore what will be normal then? Anything, no matter how it impacts or scars other peoples lives? Kink doesn't belongs to pride.

Look around you. Do you see where “No Kink At Pride” has led? Being transgender is illegal now. Exactly what people said would happen. You know what’s going to be next? Being gay is going to be illegal. Because being gay is not “respecting straight people’s boundaries”. They don’t want to see you. They want to kill you.

In support of the OP, let me clue the reply poster in to some of how the worldview of conservative bigots works:

If you are trans you are a sex pervert

If you're gay you're a sex pervert.

If you're the world's most chaste and godly nun praying in a convent, who has a lesbian thought once while delirious from a fever, you are a sex pervert.

If you're a family with a white picket fence house, a breadwinner, a stay-at-home parent, two cars, a dog, and whose politics are right wing... if you happen to be a same-sex couple, you're sex perverts and probably pedophiles.

If you're a closeted, self-hating, self-hurting, self-repressing queer going through every torturous form of conversion therapy, who condemns the other queers, who screams at the people who seek abortion help outside Planned Parenthood... you are a filthy, irredeemable sex pervert, a danger to children, and the most sympathy you deserve is transient pity if you admit to struggling.

There is nothing you can do, no behaviour you can engage in, no thought you can have, no clothes you can wear, no existence you can lead that is not an unacceptable sex perversion in the minds of these people. Your existence is kink, and you cannot appease them into thinking otherwise.

The bigoted conservative mind cannot conceive of queerness except as perversion, except as hedonistic degenerate thrill-seeking. They don't know another reason to do any thing, except as an exercise of power over someone else. Their entire world revolves around this idea. Everything is power, everything is control.

Therefore you can never appease them. Your mere existence is to them a totalizing threat, to their worldview, to their sense of normalcy, to their positions of social power, to their patriarchy, to their holiness. The only thing you can do that will ever satisfy them is die.

Which leaves us with this:

Either we have solidarity with our queer siblings - yes including the ones you don't understand, yes including the ones who have that weird sex that you think is fucked up, yes including the cringe annoying ones who "make the rest of us look bad," yes including the fucked up problematic ones who need to change and make amends, but who deserve their human rights whether or not they ever do that.

Because to the bigot, to the conservative, you're every bit as much of a pervert as Jenny Piss Kink and their polycule of submissive puppy-masked gender sluts. You throw your bricks when they come for Jenny, because when they come for the Piss Puppy Polycule, they're coming for you too.

So, okay. You know that post about how some posts that appear to be just be saying innocent feminist stuff end up having a totally different context if they're made by TERFs?

This is that. Just A Simple Artificer (@CraftyCatDad) is the latest Twitter handle of Andrew Blake aka thanfiction, a grifter so prolific that he has an entire Fanlore page about him.

His past behaviors include but are not limited to starting two different cults, sexually and emotionally abusing multiple people (some of which he himself has admitted), committing documented fraud and identify theft, and in general lying about literally anything you can imagine someone lying about: having a terminal heart condition, being sold into sex slavery as a child, fighting on "both sides of the Troubles," having an evil twin sister who was really the grifter, and, notably, everything about the nature and extent of his past crimes and abusive behavior.

I am extremely abridging the entire saga: this is a history that spans over twenty fucking years. There is not a single fandom he has entered that he hasn't tried to grift.

Why am I bringing this up on a post that's not about fandom?

I have zero problem with the sentiment being expressed. But knowing the context of his past behavior – including his pattern of couching his abusive behaviors as "empowering" – it stops being a thoughtful meditation on the nature of gender and more him admitting that he knows exactly how to trigger people in order to exploit them, as well as a ploy to gather followers he knows are going to be vulnerable to that exact tactic.

since my post isn't visible in the notes for some reason, I'm just reblogging again to say that the guy that this is coming from has a 20+ year long history of abuse and should not be trusted no matter how much he tries to claim that he's an ally. (also tagging @theteablogger because their blog is the most extensive collection of Andy's history as a grifter and cult leader)

For what it's worth, in all the current discussion about Andy, I have not seen anyone deadname him or claim that his trans status is not real and part of some "deception". I haven't read every single tweet or reblog, so I suppose it's possible it happened somewhere that I missed, but this feels more like a misdirection on his part--one that he's used many times in the past.

And of course, as usual, he claims that it's all old news and mostly untrue anyway, and he is but a simple man living his life and blah blah blah. It's always the same. Almost boring at this point.

Since I'm pretty sure he's talking about me: it is impossible to discuss his past without bringing up his femininely-named usernames and sockpuppets to some degree. I personally have never called him by anything other than his Tumblr username, his chosen name, or he/him pronouns, and I don't think he's lying about being trans. Honestly, even if he were, that's so much less important compared to all the other shit he's lied about.

I did, however, think his gender identity needed to be brought up in that post, since it was a thread about gender euphoria/dysphoria and positioning himself as an ally, and he has deliberately invoked that dysphoria in people and very much rejected the communities he's talking about with so much authority. And I didn't want to give him the opportunity to use his identity as a "get out of being transphobic" card.

I will say that I definitely outed him as an unrepentant abuser and con artist, and I did that on purpose. I'm willing to give most people the benefit of the doubt, especially since a lot of Tumblr is willing to blow things out of proportion (everything is abusive and/or pedophilic!) or ignore sincere attempts at change.

But not this fucking guy.

Not when he keeps pretending that this is just people regurgitating silly internet drama or refusing to let him atone for the mistakes he made when he was but a ~young impressionable man.~

Not when he does the exact same shit he's always done ("DM me so I can isolate you and draw you into my confidence!" "I've never tried to raise money except just now when I crowdfunded for my sparrow!" "It's transphobic to bring up the actual literal crimes that I committed!").

And just as a sidenote, I find it interesting, though not at all surprising, that he's not saying what parts of my post were true and what was "exaggerated" or "conjecture." Almost like he wants people to assume that the culty stuff isn't true or is exaggerated.

I dont understand like 90% of the fandom acronyms people are using in the tags, but I’m glad it seems like many people from different walks of life can relate to this. I feel like we’re kindred spirits in a way.

not to Discourse but I’m a cis man and my partner is an afab enby and if you call us a “straight couple” I will personally come to your house tie you to a chair and make you listen to a podcast about gender identity on endless repeat

this is specifically @ the people who saw us at pride together and saw them wearing a “THEY/THEM” button and still referred to them as my “girlfriend” you’re all cancelled thanks

it’s called respecting queer people juice

y'know the really amazing thing about the notes on this post - apart from just the sheer number of people who are, like, viscerally terrified of the existence of a person who isn’t cis - is how many of them are responding to things that aren’t here. specifically, you’ll notice I said nothing about my sexuality. I didn’t say I identified as non-het, or that I considered myself part of the LGBTQIA community. on the flip side, I also didn’t give you any reason to believe I’m not bi, or that I’ve never been in a relationship with a cis man. y'all know nothing about my sexuality from this post and you don’t need to and I’m not going to tell you about it now because! this post! was not! about me!

it was about respecting my partner’s identity. and the fact that they don’t get that respect from people in the exact community that they should be able to count on getting it from.

ie, you.

they are not het or cis, and no relationship they are in will ever be a “straight relationship” because they. are not. het. or. cis.

everyone in the notes gatekeeping me because I’m “not oppressed”? I never said I was. the person you’re really attacking and invalidating by shitting on this post is them, a pansexual nonbinary person who is unerasably queer.

huh. it’s almost as if the whole “we can’t let straight men use queerness to worm their way into our community” discourse is just an excuse to hate trans people, isn’t it.

I reblog this every time I see it–

broke: marvel movies are like a modern mythological pantheon

slightly less broke: I wonder if watching the batshit world of comic books get sanitized for anodyne mass consumption is what it felt like to live in some newly-conquered Roman province and watch all your local deities get turned into different names for Jupiter

the "came back wrong" trope except like... they didnt. like this mad scientists wife died, and so he studied necromancy, brought her back, and she came back and it all worked. like she came back exactly the same as she was before with literally no difference. but the scientist guy is like "oh no... what have i done.... shes Different now!!!! she came back Wrong!!!!" and shes just like. chilling. reading a book. cooking dinner. shes just so so normal but in the guys mind hes like "oh shes soooo weird" but shes just normal

NO its a JOKE and YOU DONT GET IT. ITS NOT THAT DEEP

While she was dead he put his memory of her on such a high pedestal that she could never live up to it alive

alternatively‚ she came back perfectly fine but he thinks she came back wrong‚ because the tragic reality is that he never actually knew his wife

im going INSANE thats MY POST.

It's your post but the journey to posting it changed it to such a degree that even its closest intimacies are now foreign to you. Sorry dude.

I feel sorry for the old man, but it was stealing.  There is no apparently about it. Water is not free, it’s not a right to have it, and people pay must pay for it.  If a government gives a thing to you like utilities, its still not free because they take it from somewhere else, like in taxes.

my friend visiting my house: hey i’m thirsty can i get a glass of water

me:

Nestle isn’t gonna fuck you

Avatar

If I buy a loaf of bread, and then decide to make a sandwich for my friend from some of it, is this STEALING? Is my friend STEALING the bread I already PAID for in full? Is the bread seller entitled to receive compensation because I, the person who PAID ALREADY the full value of the bread they sell, decided to give away a portion of it (a portion from an already PAID FOR product).

When people say that capitalism rots your brain they aren’t kidding - this is literally a disease, one of the mind and soul, and it’s contagious, and it’s deadly… Luckily there is a cure:

let’s stop seeing sex as the biggest thing you can do to show someone you love them

everyone knows that the real way to show someone you love them is to find them a really cool rock. not a diamond. just a neat rock that you think they will enjoy

Not a rock THE  ARKENSTONE

Why just one rock Why not three Why not the silmarils

And one on why not the arkenstone

You’re right. Just get them a ring.

Everyone once in a while this makes an re-appearance on my dash and it’s great

So I’ve been enjoying the Disney vs. DeSantis memes as much as anyone, but like. I do feel like a lot of people who had normal childhoods are missing some context to all this.

I was raised in the Bible Belt in a fairly fundie environment. My parents were reasonably cool about some things, compared to the rest of my family, but they certainly had their issues. But they did let me watch Disney movies, which turned out to be a point of major contention between them and my other relatives.

See, I think some people think this weird fight between Disney and fundies is new. It is very not new. I know that Disney’s attempts at inclusion in their media have been the source of a lot of mockery, but what a lot of people don’t understand is that as far as actual company policy goes, Disney has actually been an industry leader for queer rights. They’ve had policies assuring equal healthcare and partner benefits for queer employees since the early 90s.

I’m not sure how many people reading this right now remember the early 90s, but that was very much not industry standard. It was a big deal when Disney announced that non-married queer partners would be getting the same benefits as the married heterosexual ones.

Like — it went further than just saying that any unmarried partners would be eligible for spousal benefits. It straight-up said that non-same-sex partners would still need to be married to receive spousal benefits, but because same-sex partners couldn’t do that, proof that they lived together as an established couple would be enough.

In other words, it put long-term same-sex partners on a higher level than opposite-sex partners who just weren’t married yet. It put them on the exact same level as heterosexual married partners.

They weren’t the first company ever to do this, but they were super early. And they were certainly the first mainstream “family-friendly” company to do it.

Conservatives lost their damn minds.

Protests, boycotts, sermons, the whole nine yards. I can’t tell you how many books about the evils of Disney my grandmother tried to get my parents to read when I was a kid.

When we later moved to Florida, I realized just how many queer people work at Disney — because historically speaking, it’s been a company that has guaranteed them safety, non-discrimination, and equal rights. That’s when I became aware of their unofficial “Gay Days” and how Christians would show up from all over the country to protest them every year. Apparently my grandmother had been upset about these days for years, but my parents had just kind of ignored her.

Out of curiosity, I ended up reading one of the books my grandmother kept leaving at our house. And friends — it’s amazing how similar that (terrible, poorly written) rhetoric was to what people are saying these days. Disney hires gay pedophiles who want to abuse your children. Disney is trying to normalize Satanism in our beautiful, Christian America.

Just tons of conspiracy theories in there that ranged from “a few bad things happened that weren’t actually Disney’s fault, but they did happen” to “Pocahontas is an evil movie, not because it distorts history and misrepresents indigenous life, but because it might teach children respect for nature. Which, as we all know, would cause them all to become Wiccans who believe in climate change.”

Like — please, take it from someone who knows. This weird fight between fundies and Disney is not new. This is not Disney’s first (gay) rodeo. These people have always believed that Disney is full of evil gays who are trying to groom and sexually abuse children.

The main difference now is that these beliefs are becoming mainstream. It’s not just conservative pastors who are talking about this. It’s not just church groups showing up to boycott Gay Day. Disney is starting to (reluctantly) say the quiet part out loud, and so are the Republicans. Disney is publicly supporting queer rights and announcing company-supported queer events and the Republican Party is publicly calling them pedophiles and enacting politically driven revenge.

This is important, because while this fight has always been important in the history of queer rights, it is now being magnified. The precedent that a fight like this could set is staggering. For better or for worse, we live in a corporation-driven country. I don’t like it any more than you do, and I’m not about to defend most of Disney’s business practices. But we do live in a nation where rights are largely tied to corporate approval, and the fact that we might be entering an age where even the most powerful corporations in the country are being banned from speaking out in favor of rights for marginalized people… that’s genuinely scary.

Like… I’ll just ask you this. Where do you think we’d be now, in 2023, if Disney had been prevented from promising its employees equal benefits in 1994? That was almost thirty years ago, and look how far things have come. When I looked up news articles for this post from that era, even then journalists, activists, and fundie church leaders were all talking about how a company of Disney’s prominence throwing their weight behind this movement could lead to the normalization of equal protections in this country.

The idea of it scared and thrilled people in equal parts even then. It still scares and thrills them now.

I keep seeing people say “I need them both to lose!” and I get it, I do. Disney has for sure done a lot of shit over the years. But I am begging you as a queer exvangelical to understand that no. You need Disney to win. You need Disney to wipe the fucking floor with these people.

Right now, this isn’t just a fight between a giant corporation and Ron DeSantis. This is a fight about the right of corporations to support marginalized groups. It’s a fight that ensures that companies like Disney still can offer benefits that a discriminatory government does not provide. It ensures that businesses much smaller than Disney can support activism.

Hell, it ensures that you can support activism.

The fight between weird Christian conspiracy theorists and Disney is not new, because the fight to prevent any tiny victory for marginalized groups is not new. The fight against the normalization of othered groups is not new.

That’s what they’re most afraid of. That each incremental victory will start to make marginalized groups feel safer, that each incremental victory will start to turn the tide of public opinion, that each incremental victory will eventually lead to sweeping law reform.

They’re afraid that they won’t be able to legally discriminate against us anymore.

So guys! Please. This fight, while hilarious, is also so fucking important. I am begging you to understand how old this fight is. These people always play the long game. They did it with Roe and they’re doing it with Disney.

We have! To keep! Pushing back!

Someone reblogged this saying they'd never heard any of this before and they didn't even know how to begin verifying it, so let me help!

Here's a 1995 article from the NYT about Disney putting this policy into effect after promising to do so in 1994.

Here's a wikipedia page about Disney's unofficial Gay Days and how they've been protested by Christian groups.

I tried to find the book I read, but honestly so many different weird evangelical anti-Disney books came up when I was googling that I can't be sure which one it was. 🙃

Avatar

I can't help you with sources other than the fact that I too am an exvangelical kid whose parents went on-and-off banning Disney movies from the house as I was growing up. ("On" when the pastor got on a tear about the evils and how the movies had gay propaganda in it and ~witchcraft~ and my mom would obediently remove anything from my reach that had the concept of "magic" in it - and then "Off" when the pastor hadn't said anything for a while and my mom got sentimental about how much she loved Winnie the Pooh and The Aristocats.)

I remember the first "Gay Days" and how they put up signs around the park saying that it was unofficial and not affiliated with Disney, and how that didn't stop the evangelicals from foaming at the mouth, and the groups had to change it to "Friendship Days" to keep from getting gay-bashed... and I also remember how the last time I went to Gay Days (2019) they had fucking Pride merch in the stores with signs saying that proceeds from the sales went to GLSEN to prevent gay kids from being bullied at school.

Disney has done a LOT to normalize queerness in the mainstream - and I know it's a joke, blah blah, first canon Disney queers being a new minor character every year, but outside of the movies, in the real world where real people live, it has done a LOT.

And yeah. You want Disney to wipe the floor with these dudes. Because as evil as some of their business practices are (capitalism sucks, man, and there's no getting around that) - I HAVE to emphasize that they have been curating a safe space for real-life queer people for decades. And we want that to win.
