Contestants in the 2017 Miss Peru competition used their platform to bring awareness to violence against women. Instead of stating their body measurements when they stepped up to the mic, the women reported statistics like “the 65% of university women assaulted by their partners” and “more than 80% of women in my city suffer from violence.” Source Source 2

On Oct 31, 2015 scientists used radar imaging to photograph a little dead comet. Much to their surprise, it looked quite a lot like a skull! Due to that and the timing, they nicknamed it Death Comet.

Death Comet will swing by us again this year (albeit a little later than last time).

Happy Halloween, all!!! 💀🎃

Inspired by a similar plan in Canada, police in the UK gave out free lollipops at the door of a nightclub to reduce rowdiness after closing time. The idea was that drunken, late-night clubbers wouldn’t be inclined to shout or cause a disturbance while they were sucking on them. It worked. Source

The second largest country in the world just decriminalized homosexuality. The Supreme Court of india struck away a colonial era ban on gay sex. “History owes an apology to LGBT persons for ostracisation and discrimination; It is difficult to right a wrong by history. But we can set the course for the future.” This is such a victory for the lgbtq+ community within India and all over the world. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈

There’s a rare type of blood that’s shared by only 43 people in the entire world. ‘Rhnull’ blood doesn’t contain any of the Rh antigens that 99.9% of humans have. It’s often called ‘golden blood’ because it can be given to anyone who has a rare Rh blood type, but there are only 9 active donors, so it’s only used in extreme circumstances. Source Source 2
