Fahrenheit 451 has a lot of great thoughts and a really enjoyable prose (at least to me) and cool fire/water symbolism and really fun descriptions of fire (I like fire) and waxes poetic about books (I love books) and also it has a sick robot murder dog. It’s a good book it really is. As long as you don’t think too hard about Clarisse and Mildred…because there lies uncomfortableness…

fahrenheit 451 is more about “everyone on their dang phones all the time” than it is about government censorship and some parts of the book really come across in that “boomer” tone but other parts are like. Fuck dude. Fuck. and the things i’m real fuckin hung up on? the parts that live in my brain and have lived in my brain for years and years? they’re almost all things glossed over by the plot. set dressing. jesus christ somewhere beneath the constant streaming and constant distractions and the denial of depth mildred montag felt something she really fucking felt something

Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touched some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you're there. It doesn't matter what you do, he said, so long as you change something from the way it was before you touched it into something that's like you after you take your hands away.”

~ Fahrenheit 451

With a second read of Jonathan's journey to Dracula's castle, more and more I find myself admiring the locals he meets along the way.

They've clearly been under the oppressive threat of Dracula for a long time--all of them show true fear in the face of him. He's paramount to the Devil itself to them, going off the words Jonathan translates. And that's totally understandable, considering he steals their children for his "brides" to eat, never mind what other things he may be subjecting them to.

With that context, it would be very easy for them to leave Jonathan to his fate. They could tell themselves there's nothing to be done for him already. They could be glad that he's Dracula's choice, even, if that chances a reprieve for them.

But many of them chose compassion over fear.

Every step of Jonathan's last leg to Dracula's castle has someone reaching out to prevent the tragedy in front of them.

The woman in the hotel begs him to leave, please leave, for your safety, and when he refuses she freely gives up what might be a precious belonging in the hope it will save him.

The people at the bench of the hotel try to bless him from evil.

A man in the coach points out a beautiful view of the mountain during the ride, perhaps wishing to give Jonathan one last moment of wonder before he vanishes into the horrors of the castle.

The coachman drives his horses to their limit in the desperate hope that he can make Jonathan miss the awaiting coach, and the other passengers do not begrudge him this risky move but instead urge him to go faster, faster!

Very little of helps, in the end. They cannot prevent the start of this tragedy. There's a very good chance they knew that themselves.

But by god were they willing to try.

I just want to remind you that sometimes your life really doesn't begin until you are 26+... Romanticizing and obsessing over our youth is harmful. Growing up is beautiful. Discovering who you are and how you interact with the world is a gift. Maturing and learning what you truly want out of life and living in that purpose brings fulfillment and peace. Your life is not over in your early 20's because you haven't figured it out yet, it's just beginning.

The Spotify dj feature is really cool but I’m afraid of making the dj sad by skipping too many of the songs he gives me

what i miss most about being a chocolatier (besides the honor of gayest job title imaginable) is we had these massive bars of chocolate for tempering that were 10lbs and we had to break them into smaller chunks. by using a sledgehammer of course. i LIVED for that shit

all the other people in production HATED busting them especially at the end of the shift but i fucking loved it. give me the hammer. i can be trusted with the hammer. And everyone did in fact trust me with the hammer because again they all thought it was tedious and painful. me? i was having the time of my life. even if i had to pick up the slack for other people i would be annoyed for all of five seconds before the euphoria of getting to smash things set in. and the production areas had windows too so customers often just got to watch me beat the shit out of a massive chocolate bar. with a hammer. like a zoo animal. i was getting paid to do that. every day i miss it.

I love you "boring" female characters. I love you ingenues. I love you female characters who aren't "modern" enough. I love you silk hiding steel trope.
