i genuinely think we should have more cross-gender acting in film. i think cis female actors should play cis male characters and vice versa without the characters’ masculinity or femininity being a joke and i think this ought to happen enough that it isn’t a big deal at all. cast timothee chalamet as marie antoinette he can pull it off. let gong li play an emperor. this will be good for everyone, especially me

I'm not aromantic but I believe in their beliefs

I don't know how much this has actually been discussed in online spaces, but when I talk to other aros irl it's pretty widely agreed apon that being aromantic is both an orientation and a political identity. By which I mean that being aromantic requires a massive shift in world view, including the dismantling of amatonormativity, the deconstruction of what the word 'love' even means, and the realization that you have control over what your important relationships look like.

All of those things can have a major impact on your political outlooks, social outlooks, and simply the way you view the world. I've said before that even if I did experience romantic attraction some day I would still identify as aro because being aromantic has shifted my view of what relationships even are to such a degree that like... romantic relationships barely make sense as a category to apply to myself anymore.

Everyone I know who identified as aro or questioned if they were aro before experiencing attraction and identifying as allo has ended up poly for what I suspect is this exact reason. Polyamory is one of the only relationship models out there currently that allows for romantic relationships outside of the typical amatonormative model and once you've done some work dismantling how society views relationships slotting right back into traditional monogamy doesn't have a lot of appeal.

So anyways op, I know a lot of folks in the notes are taking this to simply mean 'not wanting to date' (which is fine, that is still a radical notion in our society that I'm glad the aro community can make space for) but I think your tags are absolutely right about pushing amatonormativity out of our spaces as an aro value that people can (and should!) believe in and benefit from even if they're not aro.

'why are actors striking aren't they all millionaires' here's a paywall free link to an article that mentions how most of the cast of one of netflix's biggest shows had day jobs bc they couldn't afford rent

remember that actors are usually not well off at all. forget the big screen famous guys, they're the very few ones. this strike is for all the other ones, that deserve to have a livable paycheck for their job.

And a note to say that, had Orange is the New Black been on a not-streaming network which paid them residuals each time they screened the show the actors would have done fine or better than fine.

At the start of streaming rules were agreed to let these beginning ways of putting out stories over the web succeed and get established, and letting them not pay actors and writers traditional style residuals was part of what was agreed. They got established. They succeeded. The actors and the writers took the hit.

Streaming actors get screwed ten ways to Sunday. I'm still a part of the Union of BC Performers because I did work when I was young, and for a movie I was in when I was FIVE YEARS OLD, for around 30 SECONDS, in a movie that did poorly, I make more money in residuals than any of the leading actors in OITNB do for all of their hard work as adult professionals. It's sick, quite frankly, and I for one can't wait for the WGA and SAG to land lucrative contracts. There's no way in hell I should get more on my quarterly checks than the talent who worked on a show like that. By the way, once my movie hit Netflix in about 2012, my checks got slashed in half.

can we talk about the ups strike can we PLEASE talk about the ups strike

i know since writers and actors are already striking thats gonna take up most of the news space on social media but like. ups has until july 31st to meet the teamster's demands and if not then theyre going on the biggest strike against a single corporation since the early 1900s. the uaw (auto manufacturers union) contract is up this fall, and i believe the alu (amazon labor union) is as well. there's a huge possibility that they might strike as well, depending on how long the ups strike lasts.

im seeing a lot of talk about hollywood going down but i want to see more talk about labor rights and working class solidarity across the board... like A Lot of shit is about to go down

we're about to see a lot more propaganda by more than just hollywood, we're about to see a lot of bullshit political moves on local, state, and federal levels. dont fall for it. workers have power.

The US does not have the cohesiveness to have a general strike. It really doesn't; those can't happen when so much of the working world is isolated from other workers. (The last "general strike" in the US was in 1919 - in Seattle alone. 65,000 workers struck in support of shipyard workers.)

What we can get, is several unions striking at once, and more unions supporting them - refusing to cross picket lines, while otherwise doing their jobs.

Writers' and Actors' strikes can effectively shut down the entertainment industries - there'll be a gap before that's obvious (because studios can still broadcast/stream projects that are complete) but it doesn't take long for them to push into panic mode if they can't do any new production.

A distribution strike, like UPS, can shut down a whole lot of mainstream businesses. The corporate shills will try to talk about the tiny fragment of a percentage of their work that relates to medical emergencies; they will NOT be talking about how much money they're saving using UPS instead of private couriers. They won't be talking about how, if these workers are providing such a necessary and vital service, why aren't they being paid more?

The idea of the United Auto Workers striking fills me with glee, because omg we do. not. need. as many cars as we have; we don't need replacement cars every three or five years; barring weird accidents, almost nobody needs a new car THIS year... but wow a few weeks of shutdown would send car manufacturers into screaming fits because they're conditioned to think that every quarter is supposed to have increased sales based on the previous one. They really don't want to think about "the US has 332 million people and 287 million cars, so, more than 1 car per household, and that's... probably enough? For a while, anyway."

They don't want to think, "Maybe we could reduce production, increase production time, add more safety features, add more safety features for the workers, because HEY THERE ARE ENOUGH CARS; we should be doing maintenance, not growth--"

Nope. So I hope they strike.

What they're asking for:

  • reinstatement of a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) that was eliminated during the Great Recession
  • stronger job security;
  • the end of a grow-in (tiered) pay system that has members earning different wages and benefits
  • general salary increases - executives got bonuses over the last few years, record profits recorded, etc.

redraw of an old friend from last year 🌙

prints

Image description: digital art of Lucretia from The Adventure Zone, facing the viewer and reaching forward to touch a blurry painting of red-robed figures. She's an older Black human woman with a slim build, dark brown skin, and short textured white hair, wearing a navy blue dress and cape. Her expression is somber.

Light erupting from beneath her hand distorts the image of painting she's touching. Behind her, a younger version of herself wears a flowing red robe and faces away from the viewer, holding a journal. A young voidfish floats next to her, its tendrils latching onto loose journal pages. End description.

Love how ADHD, autism and schizophrenia objectively have the same amount of traits and experiences in common, but schizophrenics aren't welcome in the metaphorical club house because they're bad for the image the neurodivergency movement is currently trying to capitalize on and with "love" I mean fuck y'all

Schizophrenics are neurodivergent, too.

Once more, for the people in the back:

Schizophrenics are neurodivergent, too!

And being neurodivergent doesn't make you immune to being ableist. If you're all for disability rights until someone is schizophrenic, then stop saying you're for disability rights. Because you're not.
