H/D Erised 2023: A Modly Announcement

Hello, beloved H/D Erised Community! 

It’s almost time for our formal fest announcement! We can barely wait for this year’s art, writing, and squee! Keep an eye out for more info, coming very soon! 

But first, an announcement: 

We, your loval mods, @dictacontrion, @firethesound, and @gracerene have been deeply honored to helm this fest for the past half-decade-plus. We love H/D Erised and we are perpetually bowled over by this community’s enthusiasm, creativity, support, and brilliance. We have also come to the difficult realization that our real life plates runneth waaayy over, and we won’t always be able to commit the amount of time and energy it takes to keep this incredible endeavor running. With heavy hearts, we must announce, dear friends, that it will soon be time for us to step away. 

Still, we know that H/D Erised means as much to many of you as it does to us, and we want it to have a bright future for many years to come!! So….drumroll please….

We are DELIGHTED to announce a new mod-team-to-be: @epitomereally  (El), @thehoneybeet  (honey), and @nv-md (Ali). We are in awe of their generosity, thoughtfulness, and dedication, and we have every faith in their ability to run an amazing fest for years to come. For this year, 2023, all six of us will be working together as a transitional supermod team. Then, starting in 2024, Honey, Ali, and El will take the helm.

The three of us (Honey, Ali, and El) would like to add that we are so grateful to Dicta, Grace, and Fire for shepherding H/D Erised for five (!!!) years. Erised is one of our favorite parts of December and we are so excited for future years of Erised with you. 

Most of all: H/D Erised is what it is because of all of you—your creativity, your creations, your comments, your recs, your squee, your community spirit, your enthusiasm, and your incredible love and dedication. All of us on the mod team, past, present, and future, are grateful for all that you bring to this phenomenal community, and hope to make 2023—and many years to come!!—as wonderful and exciting as ever!!

Are you all super excited??? We sure are. We’ve had some absolutely wonderful submissions, and we can’t wait to share them with you.

Remember, we’re posting headers on our Tumblr, with weekly round-ups and the final masterlists posting on both tumblr and dreamwidth. All content will be hosted at our AO3 Collection, where you can also leave comments to let our amazing H/D Erised creators know how much you’re enjoying their work.

A few quick reminders for our wonderful participants:

We also want to encourage all our participants (and watchers!) to please be active and read and comment through the fest beyond just your gift. We know it’ll make a huge difference to every creator; they’ve all spent so many hours crafting these stories and pieces of art, and every comment means a lot!

I don’t know if this is a fear that many people have as commenters, but for those who are worried that they shouldn’t leave a comment in their native language because the author might not understand—please do it!!

Getting comments in another language is, for me, a bonus because now I’m copying and pasting it into google translate like a kid opening a mysteriously shaped present on Christmas to find when they open it that it’s exactly what they were hoping for!!

But in addition to that, it means so much to me because it shows that something I’ve written has sort of transcended language and reached across world borders and cultures and has found a home with someone! It’s brought them joy, and I might never know that person, but to see that joy expressed in a language I don’t speak—there’s just something special about that.

Oh fuck that is a good call: that's a gentleman whose career started while AIDS was in full swing within his community, who has championed harm reduction approaches to infectious disease, and who is pointed in his insistence on destigmatizing high risk communities rather than setting himself apart from them. This is someone who understands harm reduction and meeting people where they are without judgement, which is precisely the attitude you want to have when you grapple with a stigmatized epidemic.

Here's an article about his appointment to director of HIV/AIDS prevention from February 2021. Look at his career: he's been working in HIV/AIDS nearly his entire adult life and career. He's been working on increasing public health within stigmatized populations by focusing on harm reduction that entire time. Hell, this is someone with the institutional memory to remember Anthony Fauci's piss poor treatment of HIV during the Reagan administration and carry a grudge because the man didn't go far enough.

By the way, this is absolutely an example of harm reduction in terms of exercising your right to vote: there is zero chance that an advocate like Daskalakis would have been appointed under a Trump administration, but the incoming Biden administration installed him in the previous director position (which he still holds, as he adds monkeypox to his case load) as early as late 2020, before Biden was even properly inaugurated. That doesn't mean this administration is perfect or that we can't continue to agitate for better change, but it does mean that things are better and fewer people are going to die. That's basic harm reduction in action: you focus on survival for the most people as your metric, you take the route that results in the best outcome for the situation you have, and you do not ever let the imaginary perfect become the enemy of the tangible better.

Fuck, this is delightful good news. Well done Dr. Daskalakis, and all the best of luck to you and yours!
