@dice-appreciation

drake, they/them, 30s || i wanna see your weirdest dice

so yesterday I started researching some of my unidentified dice sets, and several hours later I had blacked out and forgotten to eat and had this document in front of me. So yeah, here’s a registry of all my known dice sets. Later I might see about adding pictures, but most of these entries have listing links at least.

(if you happen to recognize any of my un-IDed dice, I would love to hear from you!)

Making snowglobe dice is very fun and they are very beautiful, but I have always been bothered by the unbalanced aesthetic of round beads in square cases (especially with my rectangular d4).

An additional challenge is that the beads I use for cores have teeeeeny tiny openings because they’re designed for jewelry, so I could only use very fine glitters and not anything else cool.

So, how to solve this problem? Obviously I needed to find something that fits better than round glass beads, and I also needed to have a larger opening to fit a broader variety of filler. Alas, for months of searching I couldn’t find anything that existed that checked all my boxes. Things that worked for the d20 didn’t work for the d4, and not being able to make a full set was just not on.

The solution: Blender, endless tedium of teeny tiny measurements, and loading up clear resin in the printer.

I took my dice models, unextruded all the numbers, deleted the top face, and then solidified it with a 1mm wall, making a hollow die exactly as much smaller than my regular dice as the depth of the number wells so they’d center automatically. I also modeled that deleted face on its own as a cap with beveled edges so I could seal everything up nice and tight with UV resin in a syringe.

I can’t polish the insides to make the inserts crystal clear, but polishing the outsides to high gloss kept the prints transparent enough to see perfectly inside, and the slight matte ended up making my finished product even more amazing:

GELATINOUS CUBES

AN ENTIRE SET OF MOVING SKULL AND BONES GELATINOUS CUBES

EASILY the most amazing things I have ever made. I love them so much.

Introducing Calico Cat Dice Set! I’ve been so excited about these sets, there absolutely gorgeous and so much fun. I’ve always wanted to make cat themed dice and here is my first design! Cellulose nitrate was used to make dice from the late 1860s until the middle of the twentieth century, and the material remains stable for decades. Then, in a flash, they can dramatically decompose. Nitric acid is released in a process called outgassing. The dice cleave, crumble, and then implode.

re-ink feature: Yusun 4-color acrylic

white → antique gold

Bit of a lackluster manufacturer name for really quite a nice set. They remind me of an old wood-paneled study with red leather furniture and brass fixtures.

Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures of them with their original ink, on account of it was Bad and they went right in the de-inking juice. Here's a couple bonus angles instead:

Mechanic-specialized palettes

Because the only thing more fun than buying a special set of dice for your character is carefully tailoring the dice on hand for that character’s abilities! Dice IDs will be at the end of the post.

The most obvious example is the handful of d6s a rogue needs for sneak attack damage (plus an advantage/disadvantage d20):

But it works for other mechanics, too! For instance, I always find myself needing extra d8s for my water genasi druid, who uses them for Tidal Wave, Disintegrate, and wild shape healing. I also keep a couple extra d6s for Healing Spirit:

For my minotaur paladin, I can never remember how many d8s can go into smite damage. It’s easier to have designated smiting dice:

My tiefling ranger can do an extra d6 of Hunter’s Mark damage plus a d8 from Colossus Slayer, so I keep reminders:

And my half-elf divination wizard relies heavily on Sleep, which requires a whole handful of d8s:

How have you customized your character palettes? I’d love to see!

re-ink feature: Udixi hollow metal octopus dice

I did not vibe with this red ink. I am a simple man; I see something in copper tones, I add contrasting verdigris. Before/after:

I've seen a few people asking for a link. As with most dice available from a large manufacturer like Udixi, you can find these from a few different retailers. I got mine from here:

Hi, I saw your post with the lovely hollow metal dice you re-inked and they look great! Is there anything different about re-inking metal dice vs. resin ones? I just bought some that I love but I'm a little scared to re-ink them since I've never done metal before.

Hi aearyn! The main difference I noticed was that I had to be a little more precise with these, since the usual paint-and-wipe method would've gotten paint into crevices that are very difficult to clean. I also didn't do any de-inking, and wouldn't mess with it in case it damages the finish. Otherwise it was pretty much the same idea, just me and a paintbrush and some acrylic paint!

It's been a while, but it's time for a

Shop Update!

These will be going up tomorrow at 1pm CST!

There are still some dice available from the last update as well!

The pairs of d20s above are actually spindown sets! I have those available now too!
