Mistletoe can be deadly if you eat it.
But a kiss can be even deadlier if you mean it.

So would you say Selina considers herself "in love" with Bruce (and vice versa)?

I’m pretty sure this is a rhetorical question, but whatever. I’vegot time. Yes, yes, I would.

Bruce and Selina have beenfeatured in varying degrees of romance in many, many different media forms forthree quarters of a century, and that’s not for nothing. Even if you justnarrow it down to the comic books they’ve dated seriously, inside the costumeor out, for a steady forty years. The reason why so many writers decide to continueto build on this relationship is because it’s meaningful for both characters, and they’ve been together since the very beginning. I think a lot has beenwritten about why Bruce and Selina are a great couple, but I guess that doesn’treally explain why they love each other.

I’ll start with Selina.

I think that one of the mostimportant things that Bruce brings into the relationship is his unwaveringbelief in her. Batman more or less just looks the other way to Catwoman’s thieverybecause he believes that she’s a good person deep down, who cares about peopleand does the right thing when it really matters. This is important becauseSelina is a criminal and because of that people tend to always see the worst inher.

I think particularly in fandom the thievery aspect of Catwoman gets way tooromanticized. It’s fun that we get to read about her fantastic heists and rootfor the thief, but people really think this is not only all Catwoman is but it’s“such an important part” of who she is. Being a thief is what Catwoman does. It’snot who she is, and it certainly isn’t the most important part of her. Peoplealso weirdly use this as the benchmark for what Selina should or should not beallowed to do in her life (you what I’m talking about).

It’s ironic that this is somany people’s take because it’s something that Selina is often deeply insecureabout.

Firstly, thieving has brought a lot of strife to Selina’s life and it’s not something that she finds fulfillment in long term. It’s not a sustainable lifestyle. That thieving that everyone’salways going on about has gotten Selina thrown in prison, almost killed, she’shad to fake her own death a couple of times, and it was directly responsiblefor the torture and murder of her friends and loved ones at the hands of asadistic serial killer. The latter was something Selina felt an immense amountof guilt over and went into a depression about. To act like it’s all just funand hijinks and Selina is just an aloof thrill-seeking thief who “is all aboutthe chase” without acknowledging the consequences it has brought her is woefullymisguided and does a huge disservice to the character.

Secondly; Selina does not wantto be defined as just a thief and eventually she grows weary of the criminal lifestyle. There are many examples of Selina reforming because she wants to do more withher life. These were very prominent themes during the Bronze Age,EdBrubaker’s Catwoman run, the Telltale series, and The Dark Knight Rises.

Catwoman (v3) #1

You’re ranting, Britt! What does any of this have to do with thequestion?

This reason I’m pointing thisout is because it’s exactly this perception of her is why Selina loves Bruce. Brucedoesn’t expect so little of her and where people see the worst inher; Bruce always sees the best.

Catwoman (v3) #1

And where others dismiss her as just a thief and a criminal he respects her…

Because she gets pigeonholedinto this role Selina believes that she really can’t be anything other than athief and this really holds her back in terms of character development and story. Let me tell ya: that heist stuff gets really repetitive after awhile. Eventually it’s just something that she outgrows and all she really wants is a second chance. She even lied about having amnesia to get it.

It’s certainly fine to use those skills as part of the story, but at this point it should really be incorporated as a device in service of a larger narrative.

It’s Bruce’s unwavering belief in her, even when she doesn’t believe in herself, that encourages her to go after what she really wants, and inspires her to do good and be her best self. Just for the record: Bruce has never, not once, given Selinaan ultimatum to reform. He just believes in her and tries to appeal to thatpart of her. Any time Selina reforms it’s because she’s decided to do so forherself.

Short.

Valentine’s Day is a holiday designed solely for the purpose of manipulating couples into buying gifts, candy and lingerie for their loved ones and has become commercialised trash and that being said I love it and I wrote this batcat oneshot for it enjoy babes <3

Bruce lay down in bed, rubbing at his eyes. His bad shoulder was hurting him again. Between the Klaxon invasion threat and the shootout at the Gotham harbour park, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d slept. But with the league’s help, all the crises had been handled, and all was calm.

The bed was warm, and the room was quiet and dark. He exhaled, closing his eyes.

“Bruce?” Selina said suddenly, from her side of the bed.

“Mm.” Bruce said, his eyes still closed. Maybe if he pretended he was sleeping she would stop talking to him. He loved his fiancée, he really did. But he hadn’t slept in seventy two hours. Seventy two.

“Bruce, do you think I’m short?” Selina said.

Bruce opened his eyes, and frowned. “What?”

“Short. Do you think I’m short.”

Bruce propped himself on his elbows and squinted at her. She was looking at him with a slightly troubled expression on her face, and worrying at her lip.

“What?” He said once again, on the off-chance that he was so sleep deprived that he was experiencing auditory hallucinations.

“You heard me!” Selina said, sounding annoyed.

Why did she sound annoyed? Bruce tried to go through their recent conversations. Had he said something wrong? He scratched his head. He was bad at this.

“You’re… okay.” Bruce said, not quite sure what he was supposed to say. “You’re a normal height.”

Selina glared at the wall opposite them, crossing her arms. She didn’t say anything more.

Bruce shrugged, and turned over and closed his eyes again.

“It’s just that–”

Bruce sighed.

“Honey,” he said. “You’re not short. You’re what, 5’3? That’s fine.”

“I’m 5’4! And a quarter.”

“And a quarter.” Bruce said, dryly.

“Look, we can’t all be like you, mister 6’2. When you’re short, every quarter inch counts.”

“You’re not short, Selina.”

“Your son doesn’t seem to think so.” Selina said, sounding almost petulant.

Bruce frowned again. “My son?” He said.

“Damian!” Selina said, throwing her hands up. Bruce had the sudden urge to go back down the the batcave and spend the rest of the night there. He could sleep on a training mat, no problem.

“What did Damian do?” Bruce said, feeling resigned.

“He’s already as tall as me, you know. And he makes sure I know it.“

“Selina, you can handle a thirteen year old boy making fun of you. Come on.”

Selina hit him with a pillow.

“Ow.” Bruce said.

“I know I can. But it’s still rude.” Selina said.

“So tell him. Don’t go around hitting other people with pillows.” Bruce mumbled, shoving a pillow over his head. Selina wrenched it off.

“He’s your son. Plus, he’s right. I am short.”

“He’s just tall for his age. He’s got good genes. Talia’s tall, and so am I.”

A silence. Bruce had the distinct feeling that he’d fucked up. He cracked an eye open.

“Selina?”

Selina was looking at him coolly. “You know how you told me once that you don’t like to talk much because sometimes you’re afraid you’ll say the wrong thing? This is it, Bruce. This is one of those times.” She said, and then she stalked off to the bathroom, slamming the door shut behind her.

Bruce sighed, turning his face towards the pillow. He could just lie here, and go to sleep. He could. Sweet, sweet blessed sleep. He sighed again.

He got up and went over to the bathroom door. “Selina,” he called out. “I’m sorry. You’re really tall. Come outside.”

“Fuck off,” she yelled, her voice muffled through the wood.

Bruce leaned against the door. He rubbed at his eyes. “I love you and I think you’re the perfect height.” He looked at his watch. Seventy three. Seventy three hours without sleep.

“Fuck off,” Selina said again, but there was a slight pause this time.

“Look,” he said. “I just saved the planet from an interstellar invasion five hours ago. I’m really tired, Cat. Let’s stop fighting and go out for dinner or something, after I get some sleep. We could go to La Sirène. Your favourite.”

There was another pause. “And eat their camembert quiches?” Selina said, after a bit.

“Sure. Plus, camembert is rich in protein. So it might help your bones grow. Either way, it’s a win–”

The door opened all of a sudden and Selina smacked him. Bruce was chuckling, and he put an arm around her.

“That wasn’t funny,” she said, into the crook of his neck. She was still trying to hit him. Bruce dodged her half hearted attempts easily.

“It was a little funny.” Bruce said. He was smiling a little. “I’ll speak to Damian.”

“You don’t need to do that.” Selina sighed. “He’s just a kid, and I’m throwing a bitchfit about it.”

“Look at it this way,” Bruce said. “I’m too tall and you’re too short, and so our gene pool will be freakishly mediocre.”

Selina looked up at him incredulously. “You want more kids?” She said, and he snorted.

La Sirène it is.” He said. “I’ll phone the chef in advance and ask him to put some protein powder in the– ow.” He said, laughing. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”

“I hate you,” Selina sighed.

Anonymous asked:

What are your three favorite things about Bat and Cat as a couple?

So you’re going to make me pick just three eh? Okay I’ll try.

1. Their relationship challenges traditional gender roles

Batman is still very much a patriarchal figure and acts with a lot paternalism regarding the people in his life. Catwoman is having none of that. Despite the fact that Batman is more often than not characterized as a hyper-masculine tough guy in their relationship Catwoman is and has always been the main pursuer:

Catwoman is the one constantly encouraging and pushing the boundaries of their relationship:

And she has the more dominating personality:

TBH if it were up to Catwoman they would’ve probably said their I dos a long time ago. I think it’s good that Batman has someone in his life who will call him out on his bullshit and gets him out of his own way sometimes, and quite frankly he needs it. When they’re together they are partners and equals and Catwoman wouldn’t accept anything less.

2. They understand each other in ways that other people don’t

Batman and Catwoman are really cut from the same cloth and I genuinely believe in my heart of hearts that they are each other’s soul mates in that sense. They both have had troubled upbringings, are both dark creatures attracted to the night, and have the same bond to Gotham City.

These are not things that they are going to find in other people and it’s because of who they are. They can’t exactly sign up for eHarmony. Through their own tragedies and experiences they understand the burden they each carry and it allows them to support each other when they need to. It’s for that reason no matter what other characters writers try to get to step into the ship at the end of the day Batman and Catwoman are endgame. Sorry not sorry.

3. It’s a mutually beneficial and natural relationship

With a lot of Batman’s love interests the relationship is a lot of times portrayed as very one sided, which makes sense since they are literally created as a staple for Batman. However with Catwoman they both possess qualities and characteristics that the other lacks and by providing each other with that they are both better and happier people. Catwoman provides Batman with hope:

And Batman believes in Catwoman when most other people don’t:

Also their relationship just comes off as so natural. The thing about Batman and Catwoman is they weren’t just thrown into a relationship from the jump. Catwoman was the first major woman to enter Batman’s life back in 1940 and they’ve always flirted and had romantic tension but it took about 40 years for them get into an actual substantial romantic relationship. This allowed both characters to develop independently rather than Catwoman being created primarily as a love interest which tends to come off as forced IMO . When they finanlly did start having a romantic relationship it came off as really nature, like it’s two people you’d expect to be a relationship because it just makes sense.

I think it really speaks volumes that that aspect of their relationship has been portrayed by virtually every form of media where they have been featured from comics to tv shows to movies to Elseworlds to alternate universes and even videogames and has been for the last 75 years. I mean geez even Christopher Nolan thought to give them a happy ending. It really shows how much value fans and writers alike have placed on their relationship and how much it has  stood the test of time.

Bonus round:They’ve had relationships both as Batman and Catwoman

and as Bruce and Selina:

You didn’t think that I could really narrow it down to three did you? I think this is pretty self explanatory. It really speaks volumes that they’ve gotten so close to each other that they have they have that kind of access to each other’s lives and it’s something they don’t share with a lot of other people. I know a lot of people say Catwoman is only interested in the Batman but this is simply not true.

Bruce has a difficult personality but Selina has broken down enough walls that they see and accept each other as one whole person and are involved in all aspects of each other’s lives.

On a personal level you don’t pick your OTP: you imprint on them. I could literally go on for days about why I love Batman and Catwoman but no one has that kind of time so maybe it’s good that you limited me to just a few.
