The Doll Ranch

@desertdollranch / desertdollranch.tumblr.com

Welcome! I'm an adult collector (she/her) of American Girl dolls and other brands of 18 inch dolls, and this blog is devoted to them. Here you'll find American Girl-related news, book discussion, product discussion, doll-related craft tutorials, pictures of my own dolls, and lots of vintage Pleasant Company nostalgia.

It's bread baking day at the Merriman household, and Felicity is happy to have her friend Elizabeth helping out with the tedious chore. Today they're making loaves of Sally Lunn bread, a soft and dense loaf rich with eggs and sugar, reminiscent of French brioche.

The recipe comes from Felicity's Cookbook, which I've owned for years and have used quite often. I made this bread for the very first time this week, and I was very happy with how it turned out. It's soft, flavorful, and doesn't require any kneading. As much I as I enjoyed it, I don't think it will ever be my go-to bread recipe, since it's so exceedingly rare for me to have eggs, milk, butter, and sugar in my kitchen all at the same time!

Unlike Felicity, I never learned to make bread when I was her age. When I grew up and moved out into my own place, I brought my childhood copy of Kirsten's Cookbook, and the recipe for whole wheat round bread was what got me started and helped me learn to make my own bread instead of buying it. I've been doing that ever since. I even taught my mom to make homemade bread, which had always intimidated her.

Felicity's Cookbook mentions that the origin of the name "Sally Lunn" is not known for certain. It might come from the French words "soleil-lune" which means "sun-moon", or "sol et lune" (sun and moon) due to the golden top (sun) and white interior (moon). I checked to see if this is still a mystery 30+ years after Pleasant Company published this book, and apparently it still is. The Sally Lunn Eating House in Bath, England claims that the recipe originated from a French Huguenot refugee named Solange Luyon, whose name was then Anglicized as Sally Lunn, but there's still no solid evidence of this being true either.

In the UK, Sally Lunn bread is usually made as buns, while in the American South it's a loaf made in a round or tube pan. I thought it would be cute to make it in doll-sized mini loaf pans so Felicity and Elizabeth could help.

The recipe is below the cut, with a few of my (experienced bread baker) adaptations.

Is anyone looking to get rid of a TM 113 (or similar) wig by any chance? I want to give Anaya a shorter hair style but I haven't had any luck finding wigs that are right

I couldn't find one I liked, so I cut her hair myself. I was pretty nervous about it, but I think it turned out great!

Simone, being a supportive friend, naturally took some photos to celebrate

I was at Five Below last night buying a new phone charger when I saw this. It’s an…umbrella for your cell phone?

But my AG soaked brain went that is Perfectly doll sized. So if anyone wants a Stitch, Minnie, or Ariel umbrella for your dolls, I saw these in the tech section at Five Below and I think they’re around $5.55? At least that was the case at my store.

i think my summer project this year or at least next ag sewing project is going to be this nicki prototype outfit. this is from the agplaythings discussion boards (which i rec joining!!)

shouldnt be too hard, her meet boots, a faux leather bracelet, a red and pink small print floral fabric and white lace like cotton fabric. should be fun!

I'm going to take a stab at this too. It's cute. I like it better than Nicki's actual meet outfit.

Grannie brought her rabbits out to the garden for some fresh air and bunshine. They agreed that the dandelions were delicious, but the lilacs were only good to look at. Grannie is so proud of her garden--look at the lilac bush overflowing with flowers!

While I'm on a Samantha Parkington kick, I am once again thinking about this one piece of dialogue from the movie:

Mr. O'Malley: I want to thank you, Samantha, for your kindness towards Nellie and the girls.

Samantha: No thanks needed, sir. Nellie and the girls are my friends.

The thing that gets me most about this is the fact that he calls her by her first name and she calls him "sir". This is the norm in the hierarchy of age, but not in the hierarchy of class. Normally, he would be calling her "miss", as Nellie does at the beginning of both the books and the movie, while she might even call him by his first name, as she does Jessie's husband, Lincoln (although race may also play into that; I would need to do more reading on how all that worked); even if she referred to him by last name, like Hawkins, there would still be a usual understanding that he is considered her inferior.

But that's not what happens here. Samantha addresses Mr. O'Malley with the same respect and dignity as she would any of her wealthy friends' parents, and she doesn't expect him to address her any differently than his own daughters, who she sees as no different than her; they're her friends, no more, no less. Even though by this point Samantha's character is already pretty well-established, I feel like this just adds something extra to it.

This reminds me of Addy's short story, "Addy Studies Freedom", in which a similar exchange happens:

This sticks with Addy through the end of the story and gives her hope that things will change for the better.

Introducing Makvala Kakhaberidze, or მაქვალა ქაქჰაბერიდზე, my new Bonnie and Pearl doll.

Makvala recently moved to America from the Republic of Georgia, or საქართველო (known to the Georgian people as Sakartvelo), a former Soviet state east of the Black Sea. It's a beautiful and very ancient country, and much of it encompasses the highest peaks of the Caucasus Mountains. She's excited to be here and to share her culture with her new American friends. Her quick trick for making friends is to offer to write their names in the Georgian alphabet!

Opening my first Bonnie & Pearl doll

I'm back with yet another obscure, rare, or defunct doll brand I never thought I'd own!

Bonnie & Pearl will probably be unfamiliar to most of you. They were based in the UK, producing a line of seven beautiful and high-quality 19 inch dolls and clothing.

They had wigged hair, blinking eyes, and had a variety of hair and skin colors. After they went out of business, I knew that finding any of these dolls secondhand in the States would not be easy. So I put them out of my mind and moved on.

What made me remember and reconsider them was the fact that I've been extremely lucky lately to find all sorts of dolls that were on my wish list but I never thought I'd actually find my own. Encouraged by my success, I searched again for a Bonnie & Pearl, and struck gold by finding two of them from American sellers. One was in original form, and the other was someone's unfinished project doll. I bought them both, so that I could decide which one I preferred and resell the one I didn't.

The one that I chose to keep was in almost new condition and came with her original box, clothes, and extras.

The box is beautiful and sturdy. Bonnie & Pearl's commitment to reducing packaging gave them the unique idea to make a box that could be turned into a bed for the doll.

Keep reading to see what's inside........

After months of waiting for them to be sold in the U.S., I finally got my hands on a Zuru My Mini Baby surprise ball. The tiny silicone baby is adorable, with delicately painted features, and her skin is so soft to the touch. The surprise accessory was the little yellow stroller. Bonus picture of baby being held by big sister Brianna, my Only Hearts Club doll.

I love that we are going back to our roots and calling it the American Girls Collection! Wonder what the boxes will look like.

What I’m a looking at behind these girls? Is that a typewriter? I’m getting TTPD vibes.

@americangirlruinedmylife asked me if i had seen AG’s website today and for a minute i was so wrapped up in the revival of Julie’s floral jumpsuit that i straight up didn’t even see the other historical drops 😅

anyway i love this fit SO much. i was devastated when i got back into collecting and saw how expensive it was, so i am very pleased to be able to have a version of it (though they changed the sandal color for some reason?? it’s odd but im fine with it - I have some tan ones I’ll switch them out for).

the other thing I’m definitely going to be getting is Addy’s birthday dress- my Addy only has her pjs so i’m pumped to be able to get another fit for her!!! also I just love her birthday outfit. her snood is super fun, and I LOVE the checkered apron.

(I kinda wish the book was sold separately though, as I believe I already have a copy and. Y’know. Money.)

i actually LOVE the idea of the limited drop IF they end up doing what I think they’re going to do. they dropped just the birthday/spring outfits and books during the season when they take place….

I think they might be doing a seasonal release of each book and accompanying outfit??? 🤔

based on how much got left hanging around on sale for molly and kit, i think they might be trying to broaden the audience while limiting the amount they have to stock by doing these three girls at once - they could be planning to rotate out items as they add each new book and accompanying outfit, which I actually think is an extremely cool idea. there’s no way to know for certain until we hit summer and the next wave would release (if im not totally off base), but we’ll see 👀

My first project doll, a JLY 7! (Also my first classic mold doll somehow?) Her condition wasn't too bad, besides a lot of dirt and super loose limbs. Them legs were DANGLIN. The ends of her hair feel a bit rough but at least it's clean and brushed, and not super frizzy.

I had been really wanting to try and fix up an older doll, because I fix up stuffed animals all the time and it's so fun! I restrung her (after watching a ton of videos to see how on earth to go about doing that 😆), cleaned her up, and washed her hair just to make sure it wasn't like, gross. I'm so happy with how she turned out, even though her legs could be a bit tighter still. She can stand and hold a pose, so that's good enough for me! I'm so happy to have her in my collection 🥰

In the after photos, you can really see how dirty she was if you look at the magic eraser next to her!
