How to make life less excruciatingly "meh"???

This is a great question, love!

Deep clean your room - I mean stripping the bed, sheets, comforter, pillows! Wash it all. Go through clothes, fold them like Marie Kondo says! Old trinkets and clutter that you don’t need, be harsh and get rid of what’s unnecessary, make room for new adventures. Sweeping and mopping the floors. Dusting surfaces. Move the furniture until it feels right, rearrange the shelves.

Delete old contacts - Do you really talk to all the contacts on your phone? Are they serving you well? Get rid of old ones, strangers, things that clutter. Likewise, think deeply about real-life relationships. Do they still serve you? If not all you have to do is walk away.

Go through your music library - Play all your songs and if you skip a song or seem bored of it delete it without hesitation. What if you miss it? You won’t notice it’s gone, and eventually, you may rediscover your love for it! Make playlists for moods, adventures, stories! Romanticize life!

Go through clothes - Dump everything on the floor, sort, fold, clean. What’s ripped and needs to be mended? What’s beyond repair? What do you love, what do you hate? Do you really wear it? If not bag it up and donate it to goodwill. This seriously helped me so much. Now everything in your wardrobe serves a purpose. Also, explore new styles, colors, everything! Have fun with it!

Journal/Do a brain dump - Write about everything. Write until there’s no more to say. Clear your head, let go of things you can’t solve. Read through it a week or two later, what do you notice? Were you stressed about a specific type of thing? Was there a way you phrased things? A common thread?

Don’t run away from your problems - A big stressor we often push to the back is work, school, or responsibility. If you’re stuck in a procrastination loop make a list of every unfinished task you can think of and do a speed run. Green = What can you do now? Yellow = What can you do soon/with help? Red = What do you need to wait on/handoff to someone else.

Freshen up your nutrition - I do not mean diet. Screw that, learn how to cook foods that are good for you, check to see what vitamins you need and find vegetables/fruits with them. Are you tired a lot? Iron. Nails weak? Calcium. Unusually melancholy? Vitamin D. Don’t settle for discomfort. Learn what foods you love! Explore!

Reassess your goals/habits - This part can suck. Sometimes we have goals w hold onto we just can’t let go of. But is that what you still want or are you telling yourself you should want it? Make new goals, start small, work up to big ones.

Explore! - Wherever you live I guarantee there is something really neat nearby if you look closer! Go to museums, galleries, parks, forests, restaurants, cafes. Learn about everything. Explore intellectually, listen to TED talks, classical music and literature, join a book club. Explore creatively, find what makes you burn with passion and excitement. Learn a new skill by investing an hour a day

things i wish id been told sometimes

𓂃 your life revolves around you and it always has. if you feel the need to stop and catch your breath, do it. time moves forward, but your life will never be able to continue without you.

𓂃 the way people talk to you about others is a direct reflection of how they talk to others about you. remember that.

𓂃 life is too short to stay quiet. your voice carries you as much as you carry your voice.

𓂃 nobody pays as much attention to you as you think they do.

𓂃 nobody’s expecting you to do something useful every day. you shouldn’t expect that from yourself either.

𓂃 nothing that matters to you is useless. if it’s important to you then it’s important, period.

𓂃 don’t live every day like it’s your last–rather like it’s your first. get to know your space, get comfortable where you aren’t yet, try new things but not everything at once. and look forward to things that are coming.

𓂃 you’re only responsible for what you can control and influence. focus on that.

𓂃 stop trying to be okay all the time. you do not have to be okay all the time.

𓂃 it’s more common to have a soft and protecting tummy than to have flat abs. both is healthy, both is pretty.

𓂃 your teens are not your only chance on having a good, fulfilled, and social life. if you can’t find your place in high school you will in another environment. this isn’t where it ends.

𓂃 you have the right to change your mind over and over and over again until you’re happy.

little ways to change your life:

  • learn how to write a new style of handwriting. try wearing your hair or makeup differently. find a new perfume you like.
  • do things for yourself, not for the validation of others. resist the temptation to post everything online.
  • start doing something you usually can't be bothered to do. like making your bed, folding everything neatly, stretching every hour, going on jogs, making a healthy meal from scratch or sleeping earlier.
  • make your surroundings as cozy and as pleasing for you to look at as possible.
  • bake delicious but sometimes deformed pastries. write things that no one "gets". wear clothes and hairstyles that make u happy. crotchet a sock badly. draw a picture that won't be aesthetic on instagram. let go of the perfect image of who you need to be. do things for yourself.
  • be messy. self-expression isn't always pretty. scribble messily in a notebook. draw messily an idea for a character. write a messy draft for a story.
  • learn your thing from scratch, whether it's astronomy, greek mythology, flower species, piano, japanese, making jam, drawing comics, or something completely different.
  • let yourself fully enjoy everyday things like food, commute, and your morning routines. slow down and notice every single thing that makes you feel nice.
  • appreciate nature, like the sunlight streaming through in the morning, the sound of rain, and the colors of sunsets.
  • notice the deeper meanings and emotions in songs, poetry and paintings.
  • let people in. give new loves and friendships a chance. initiate conversations when you want.
  • read as much as you can. read different genres, popular and unpopular books, classics and new releases. give every book that catches your eye a chance.
  • enjoy your solitude like you're a character in a movie. if you can, go out for walks alone. visit the park to look at dogs, a café to people-watch, or a library to spend the afternoon buried in a book. bring a journal everywhere with you, and write poetry and quotes and doodles.
  • collect little things, like vinyls, pretty rocks and shells, stuffed animals, whatever makes you happy.
  • find a sport you like. pretend you're a superhero. dance like no one's watching. swim like you're a mermaid. exercise is supposed to be fun, so find one that you like.
  • make self care a priority. this includes taking your meds on time, starting to study for a test after procrastinating for weeks, deleting things that trigger negative emotions, and knowing when to let go and ask for help.
  • distance yourself from sources of negativity. learn to be ok on your own. know your worth and boundaries.
  • let go of the past. forgive yourself for the things you regret and start again.
  • let go of old relationships. there's a difference between missing someone and wanting them back in your life.
  • let go of your need to be perfect. it does more harm than good.
  • never compare yourself. it will always feel like a losing battle, no matter how amazing you really are.
  • keep in touch with people you don't speak to much. even a message can brighten someone's day.
  • be kind to everyone you meet, even strangers. if someone makes you happy, make them happier. compliment often, and be less judgemental. give someone a smile, you never know how much it means to them.
  • wake up earlier in the morning. wake up with the sun and fall asleep with the moon.
  • if you want to be calmer and more productive, remove things on your phone and social media apps that you don't need. (which is most of them).
  • make a list of qualities in the person you dream of becoming. write about your ideal life with what you have. make goals to be the happiest and healthiest version of yourself.
  • don't suppress your emotions, but don't overthink them either. have a kinder relationship with your body and your thoughts.
  • don't be afraid to ask for help, whether it's a teacher, therapist, friend, doctor or parent.
  • remember that healing and loving yourself is just starting over and over. it's not too late. you're still young and you can move and grow at your own pace. your peak is yet to come.

hiya violet! so i started teaching myself japanese, and i was wondering if you have any first step tips on learning/memorizing kanji?! i'm using genki vol.1 and am kind of overwhelmed by the amount of kanji introduced at once lol. i guess i'm also curious if it'd be worthwhile to have an additional text that focuses exclusively on kanji. ty in advance! i hope i don't sound silly lmao. –sincerely, a japanese language noob. T___T

Hiya Dom! It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed! The kanji hill is very steep at the start so know that almost everyone goes through that phase.

That textbook is very good but here are some books that I think might help supplement Genki:

  • Kanji Look and Learn - this is great for focusing on beginner Kanji. They have an expanded version with mnemonics as well! I used the workbook version only as a review when I was already at a pretty advanced level. I should mention that I didn’t learn kanji in order. I just started memorizing everything for fun lol. So I used the workbook as a checklist to see if I didn’t miss any basic ones. I think it’s made by the same people who wrote the genki textbooks so I highly recommend it.
  • Manga de Kanji - I didn’t use this myself but I’ve heard great things. I think it’s a great idea because it really lets you engage with the Kanji and you’ll be able to absorb it better that way!

Some personal tips:

  • The important thing is to be consistent with both studying and exposure. When I was starting out, I translated a lot of manga on my free time and it led to the accelerated expansion of my kanji vocabulary.
  • There’s an app called Anki that turned me into a kanji monster. It’s a flashcard app and you can download decks for it! (They have other languages too!) I suggest you look into it. I do this everyday. I look at the kanji and rewrite it multiple times!
  • Stroke order!!!! This is so important to learn at the beginning because once you get the hang of writing kanji, you’ll pretty much know the correct stroke order without checking a dictionary. It also helps retain kanji because your hand will have a “feel” for how it’s written by just looking at the character. So pay attention to this!!
  • In relation to that last point, Jisho.org is a good online dictionary with sentence examples, verb conjugations and stroke order!!
  • Pace yourself. I mentioned in another advice ask that I like things in order. Idk what your style is but that might help you out too. If you memorize kanji in categories like numbers, body parts, nature related words, etc. it might make acquisition and absorption more efficient for you.
  • Most importantly, have fun with it! It will never be “work” if it brings you joy. I suggest picking up a manga or focusing on what got you into Japanese. If it’s music, maybe translate lyrics and compare what you got right and what you got wrong. (You already know I’m a deconstruction pusher lol) If it’s anime, try writing down dialogue you hear and learn kanji that way little by little.

Anyway, I’m sure I’ve got lots more to share but for now, I hope this is a good place to start! I didn’t learn Japanese in the conventional way because I just self studied it and when I got to picking up the usual uni textbooks, I was already past that level. I can’t give you an accurate impression from a beginner’s perspective but I genuinely hope this helps. If anything, it just goes to show that we all learn in our own ways! So I encourage you to figure out your style! Just ネバギブアップ

I’m always here if you need help! Take care xo

part 1 |  start a studyblr

0. make the blog!

  • sideblog or new account? both have their advantages
  • as a sideblog you don’t need to keep switching accounts (i personally have a sideblog)
  • as a new account you can interact with people as your studyblr instead of your main

1. pick a url! (check out my studyblr url generator haha)

  • i picked my url because i wanted something related to hermione!
  • it helps if your url is related to studying so people know you’re a studyblr at first glance, but it’s not necessary

2. pick an icon, mobile theme, and desktop theme!

  • icons can be whatever you like! it’s the little picture that shows up by the posts you reblog and on your mobile theme
  • the mobile theme is what people see when they view your blog on mobile!
  • pick a nice color pairing! this is a nice design guide to color combinations
  • add a header image if it suits your taste! i personally don’t have one
  • if you’ve been on tumblr for a while you’ll know that most pretty desktop themes aren’t found in the theme garden. check @theme-hunter instead!
  • if your studyblr has mostly photos, multicolumn/grid themes work best
  • if you have text posts as well, i’d recommend a single column theme for easy reading
  • please for the love of all things good - make your text a legible size and color. aesthetics are pointless if no one can see the content!
  • i personally prefer clean, minimal themes with light backgrounds, but it’s all a matter of choice!

3. set up your navigation system!

  • check out my navigation page for example tags
  • basically, you would tag posts related to a certain topic with a specific tag, and then you can go to yoururl.tumblr.com/tagged/yourtag to view all of those posts!
  • you can also add a navigation page to your desktop theme with all of the tag pages linked, so that your followers can find things too!
  • check out navigation page codes here

4. make an intro post!

  • this is basically a post where you introduce yourself to the studyblr community!
  • view some examples here
  • it helps to tag some of your favorite blogs, they’ll usually reblog it to spread the word about your new account!

part 2 | grow your studyblr

1. make original content!

  • the single best way to grow your following
  • tag things with #studyblr and #studyspo
  • if blogs you really like track tags, tag them so they’ll see it
  • the main categories of original content are
  • studyspo photos - take photos of your notes/studying! daylight is the best lighting, you don’t need a fancy camera either (i use my phone)
  • planner inspo - take photos of your bullet journal/planner!
  • masterposts - link a ton of advice posts about an overarching topic!
  • advice - tips about a certain topic!
  • printables - things you can print for a variety of purposes, like to do lists or calendars. you can use any design software you’d like to make these!

2. make friends!

  • because friends are good, would recommend 10/10
  • trust me, most blogs in this community would be happy to chat!

3. host events!

4. things not to do (generally annoying)

  • don’t ask people for shoutouts/follows, unless you’re very close friends
  • ya know how some aesthetic blogs add their url or a star or whatever when reblogging, so that people will see their blog in the notes? don’t do that please
  • why are these things annoying? they’re obviously a ploy for popularity. no matter your intentions, these things always come off in the wrong way.
  • don’t get hung up on notes and followers. if you’re in studyblr for popularity, you’ve got it all wrong. sure, popularity doesn’t hurt, but it’s not the main goal. if being popular has become more important than being motivated to study, you need to take a step back.

side note: there is no magic recipe to be ~*famous~~*~, just do what you enjoy and people will notice as time goes on!

i’ve compiled a masterpost of tips that i have reblogged over the past few months and i thought it would be easier to have it all in one place. none of these posts are by me! huge thanks to everyone that has created these tips.

SCHOOL CHEAT SHEET!!

hey everyone! with the start of the new school year right around the corner, i thought i’d make my first ~studyblr masterpost~ in an attempt to consolidate some tips & goals that i’ve found helpful or that i plan to use for online classes. honestly, these might be useful even for in-person classes!

1. DEVELOP YOUR STUDY SYSTEM

it’s very easy for me to download files into multiple different folders, take notes in whatever notebook’s closest to me, or jot down dates on the back of envelopes. then, when i need to study or double check a syllabus or instructions, i have no idea where to look.
instead: choose one or two methods of storing information. you can go all-online (notion, google drive, microsoft word, etc), all physical (notebooks, printing out worksheets and assignment info, etc), or a blend (storing readings online, but handwriting notes, for example). consider making a list of your classes and noting where to find your work for each class, so if you store your work for architecture class online but your history class in 2 separate notebooks, you don’t waste time looking in the wrong place.

2. PLAN YOUR SCHEDULE

no, you don’t have to make a timetable for every minute of every day. but creating a general study schedule will allow you to mentally prepare for busy days and quickly see when you’re free.
use an online calendar or planner to block off class and study time. then, add other categories, such as: sleep, mealtimes, pet care, exercise, naps, writing, reading, clubs, or other regular obligations. i’m guilty of making mine too detailed and usually up completely blowing off my minute-by-minute schedule, so making a vague timetable and then adding categories as time goes on is probably your best bet. life happens, and you can’t account for everything. i also like to use post-its on my door or mirror to remind me what i absolutely need to get done at certain times!

3. DON’T IGNORE ‘OPTIONAL’ WORK

your professor records weekly lectures and assigns reading to go along with it. you’re tempted to do just one or the other - maybe you’re tempted to watch the lecture and skip the reading or take notes from the reading and skip the lecture. don’t do it!!! make it a goal to do both!!!
find ways to make undesirable work more bearable. can you listen to lectures while making dinner or going for a walk? how about taking notes while listening to your favorite movie soundtrack? for me, even getting cozy with some blankets, comfy clothes, and tea helps. anything that makes you dread schoolwork is a win!!

4. GET OFF THE INTERNET

i am SO guilty of spending most my time on either tumblr, instagram, or tiktok (endless fyp? no clock? yeahhh my screen time isn’t great). going on instagram when i wake up somehow turns into an hour of…doing what? i have no idea.
set reminders to do something without your phone. by this i mean: do not bring your phone with you. leave it at home when you go for a walk, don’t multitask watching a movie and answering emails, don’t browse social media while you eat. pick one or more ways to practice completely disconnecting for a while every day!. whether all of your classes are online or just a few (or none!), your brain really does need a break from screens. at the very least, try to avoid blue light before bed (yeah, i know you’ve heard this one before). for me, the tide app is a lifesaver, and i know a lot of you love forest. otherwise, set reminders using a calendar app or your alarm clock!

5. MONITOR AND CARE FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

obviously miss rona has thrown a wrench in many of our plans for school, work, and life in general. if not, there’s no way it hasn’t impacted you in some way or another. pay attention to your thoughts, energy levels, and how you’re coping with recent changes. now’s a really good time to reach out for help if you’re able to; if not, there are various online resources and communities that might help you until you can. mental health support is for everyone.
some masterposts and resources that may be helpful:

6. STAY CONNECTED ONLINE IF YOU CAN’T IN PERSON

the first month of my freshman year of college will be online, the rest of the semester will likely be online (though i will be on-campus), and i’m not allowed to see most of my friends. i’m guessing i’m not the only one! regardless of your personal situation, it can be really hard but so helpful to stay in touch with friends, family, and faculty. the first few months were full of zoom calls and virtual hangouts, but they might be dying down by now.
send letters, set up virtual calls with far-away friends, go to office hours, or video call family members. this might be the hardest one on this list, seeing as most of us are suffering from zoom burnout already. to avoid the potential stress of spontaneous socializing, try scheduling a call once a week at a regular time, asking your friends to facetime later, creating a weekly study group for your classes, watching netflix with someone using an extension like netflix party, texting acquaintances to check in, sending letters/emails to older family members, getting involved in an online community (this is studyblr promo :D) or making a goal to go to office hours once a week/twice a month, etc.

hopefully these gave you a few ideas on how you might get organized and tackle online classes this year!

How to Really Comprehend a Scientific Paper

**credit to my research advisor, she’s an amazing mentor and I aspire to be just like her someday :)

  1. Read the abstract. Write down what the paper says it is going to be about.
  2. Read the introduction. Write down what the paper says it is looking to accomplish and how.
  3. Read the conclusion. Write down what the paper actually did accomplish.
  4. Go through and find all the pictures, graphs, or diagrams. Write notes explaining these images to yourself.
  5. Read the whole paper start to finish. Write a summary of the paper as though you are explaining it to a layperson, and then another summary as though you are explaining it to a colleague.

Throughout all of the above steps:

  • If there are words you don’t know google them and write down the definitions
  • If the paper defines a formula, law, variable, etc in a certain way write that down
  • If there are references to or recommendations of other literature write those down. After the last step if there’s anything you’re uncertain about or would like more information on look to that list for further reading

okay, so here in california precautionary measures against COVID-19 have become increasingly intense. most schools have closed and are preparing to make the transition to “distance learning” aka online classes. this is a big change for many of us – but don’t panic!

welcome to surviving online classes 101!

self discipline

this is more of a warning than a tip. working from home means you will have to exercise a lot more self discipline. it can be a little bit boring or lonely at times. you cannot count on motivation from others (professors, classmates, friends, etc.), so you will have to learn some self discipline.

create your own classroom

a good way to make the transition is to try and mimic the classroom setting as closely as possible. something that might be helpful is to set up a space designated for work. try to avoid the temptation to work in your bed or on the couch. that trains your brain to be alert in those places and makes it harder to relax/fall asleep. at least during online lectures, try and eliminate distractions that wouldn’t be present in a regular classroom (like tv or netflix playing in the background, or having your phone out)

dress for success!

dress in the way that makes you feel most productive. if you’re one of those people who usually rolls into class wearing sweats and still kills it, good for you! if you’re one of those people who needs to put on a full face of makeup to feel alive and ready for the day, do that! even at home!! i personally never wear makeup but if i try to be productive in pjs… disaster. i’ve also found that cute workout gear makes me feel badass while still being comfy.

create a schedule

now more than ever you need to figure out how to manage your time. you can use a planner, bujo, google calendar, the forest app, whatever. just make sure you keep track of things like

  • due dates and TIMES
  • exam dates
  • lecture times
  • hours spent studying
  • meals (pls eat 3 if possible)
  • water intake
  • sleep schedule

pack your bag like you usually would

i know this probably sounds so dumb, but when you’re done working clean up after yourself. pack everything up like you would at school, to sort of signal to your brain that academic time is over for now. and then unpack and set up when you’re ready to get to work again. this is just another way to trick your brain into that school mindset while you’re stuck at home.

don’t overwork yourself

break up your studying into chunks. being cooped up all day can make us feel like we’re wasting time, but be sure to schedule breaks and reward yourself after a solid study session. i’m a big fan of the pomodoro method, and it can be customized really easily to allow for more or less study/rest time.

maintain a healthy sleep schedule

now is the time to develop that healthy sleep schedule we all dream about. staring at a computer all day is exhausting and hard on the eyes and brain, so make sure to give them enough rest and time to recover each night. also, consider investing in glasses that block blue light, even if you don’t usually use glasses. this will keep our eyes young lol.

communicate with your teachers and classmates

most of us are making this transition to online learning together. any time you have questions, email your professor. reach out to your classmates at the beginning and exchange emails/phone numbers/social media so you can build a support system. if something goes wrong, screenshot it immediately and reach out to your professor. technology isn’t perfect, and mistakes can happen, just communicate them.

turn things in early

this is my biggest tip. when you are relying on online submissions for assignments and digital lectures, you always want to allow extra time to fix any errors you might encounter. your professor will also be much more willing to help you fix a problem two days before a deadline rather than two minutes before a deadline. eliminate that uncertainty by playing it safe with online submissions.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!! YOU GOT THIS!! WE GOT THIS!!

in honor of my university announcing fall quarter will officially be online :’)

Hi everyone! I’ve so enjoyed doing my 2020 quarantine challenge and getting to know so many of you (and discovering your amazing blogs) that i’ve decided to create this new SUMMER STUDYING CHALLENGE! i did consider continuing my other challenge but my school year has now ended and the way i study in the summer and my priorities is very different compared to during school time - which i’m sure is the same for may of you!
