The current ongoing negotiations around salaries in my workplace and all of the bullshit our directors keep throwing at us make me so mad about some of the commentary surrounding Nate’s transfer to West Ham and how apparently the real victim of this transfer is Rebecca. Because if I was offered a staggering promotion at another company, and my current boss came to me and said ‘hey, I promoted you once due to your impressive skillset and I once helped you do some confidence exercises, therefore you are absolutely forbidden from taking this amazing opportunity just because the owner of that company cheated on me, and if you do take that opportunity then you’re a terrible ungrateful person’ then I would bite through a steel bar and then throw it at their head.
I feel like this completely misses the heart of Nate’s betrayal by disregarding all of the other, very much important context here. This is not simply about Nate leaving for a promotion. To parse his arc down to that would be to entirely ignore all of the personal relationships and interactions on the show. Which means you’ve completely misunderstood the show’s overall messaging. Nate leaving is a betrayal because it is explicitly made to be personal. He first betrays Ted by leaking the story of his panic attack and then he goes on to work for Rupert, who is Rebecca’s ex-husband. All of this context illuminates that Nate is motivated by a personal vendetta more than simply professional advancement. Also, one of the core messages in the show is about choosing kindness and personal growth over professional gains. So this interpretation of Nate’s arc is just not informed by the narrative at all.
