Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

like we really hate to hear this - but power is in every human relationship. unless you are the exact same as your partner in age, class, race, ethnicity, religion, language, nationality, citizenship status, gender, sexual orientation, physical and mental ability, salary, education, etc, you have to negotiate the problems material power differentials pose to love, to treating others well. the response to this seems to have been to make certain points of difference - like age - load-bearing, in a way that erases others - class would be my example: far bigger a power disparity than, say, a ten year gap in age between adults is class and inheritable wealth, but you almost never see that acknowledged in the same way. and even if you were at parity in all those areas (gay twincest sweep??) there is still the emotional power that someone’s love and desire for you gives you over them. you can’t get rid of it. you cannot find the perfect relationship where it doesn’t exist by steadily winnowing down your “ethical” options via widening designations of “problematic relationships.” you have to confront the power you have over other people and think how you will wield it most lightly. sorry!

i also think 'agency' gets totally misused when people talk about the feminist retelling tm. because you can actually have a feminist story in which the lead women do not have a lot of agency because it has been removed from them. like if someone was for example writing about a woman in ancient greece or the enslavement of the women of troy. it is in fact feminist to talk about historical (sexual) violence and oppression against women

On the Mechanics of Lyctorhood

I want to preface this by saying this is a long, long post that is going to delve deep into lyctorhood, skim the surface of physics and biology, and fully embrace conjecture! If I'm right about all this then I'm very happy, but I also cannot wait to be disproven in Alecto the Ninth.

Thanergy

Thanergy is the product of the decay of thalergy: this is the principle that underpins all of necromancy. All necromantic adepts are capable of manipulating both thalergy and thanergy, but necromancy is shown to be reliant on thanergy specifically, and is most geared toward utilising thanergy as a result.

“Thalergetic decay causes cellular death,” you said carefully, pressing the nail in harder, “which emits thanergy. The massive cell death that follows apopneumatism causes a thanergetic cascade, though the first bloom fades and the thanergy stabilises within thirty to sixty seconds.” [Harrow the Ninth]

As shown by @pokkop15 in this post the term thanergy is almost certainly derived from Thanatos, the Greek God of Death, but thalergy's origins are more murky: likely candidates are thaleros (a greek word that means lively), Thalia (the muse of Festivity whose name also means blooming), or Thalassa (divine personification of the sea in greek mythology, which would fit considering how life is very associated with saltwater in TLT).

The Eightfold Word: What is Lyctorhood?

tbh, i feel like ppl who leap to paint wake as a "bad mom" are doing it from a place of misogyny. as you said, Gideon's feelings towards wake are totally valid, but imo we should talk more abt how wake being so desperate that she had to impregnate herself with the material of her enemy is actually horrifying. of course she wasn't going to have any maternal feelings towards g; she already had pash, and the whole pregnancy must have just felt like a massive violation on every level

i think this is actually responding to @pyrrhadves' post more than mine, and i don't want to speak for him, but i definitely agree with this. the tendency to reduce characters who are mothers (and even female characters who aren't) down to "good mom/bad mom" is common across fandoms but i think it's particularly egregious here; wake never wanted to be a mother, was clearly desperate to do anything that she thought might kill john and dismantle the nine houses that had been persecuting non-house peoples for nearly ten thousand years, and was also clearly traumatized by the act of impregnating herself and giving birth (the reproductive equipment and the notes to augustine and mercymorn in the river bubble come to mind). and the trauma of this is a continuation of a larger theme of autonomy violations and reproductive trauma that we see throughout tlt. obviously you can feel however you want about choosing to impregnate yourself specifically to kill the baby (though i think that a lot of people ignore wake's motivations for doing so and try to make it out to be less complicated than it is), but to reduce her whole character "gideon's awful mom" is a real disservice both to a complex and interesting female character and to tlt's overarching themes.

Having your main anxiety response be Avoidance is crazy cause you'll think you're chillin and then one day you're like waitttt I've been paralyzed with fear this whole time. Damn

Was anybody else playing dead the whole time they were teenagers or is that just a me problem. Like I'm 20 now and I'm like Oh shit I didn't do anything. Because I'm scared

And you see. Now I'm scared because I haven't done anything. Everything in the world is so scary and I am not medicated. I've been waking up sweaty the last few days. I hold so much tension you wouldn't believe. But to everyone else I just look like I'm chillin

downsides of being super ill for a few days are being ill, plus sides are i finally sat down and watched the 2003 clone wars cartoon!

2008 anakin really makes you realize how a violently unstable angsty white boy who commits many war crimes and genocides without guilt can also be a genuinely likable and understanding person who is loved and trusted by those around him.

10/10 deeply unsettling character.

“Now maybe it’s time for you to be something more than a lightsaber. Think about yourself! Settle down, find a home!” “What home, Greez? There is no home. Home was the Order. It was my teacher. It was everyone I lost. What does their sacrifice mean if I go and I just… give up and stick my head in the sand?”

"So essentially what Star Wars to me was, a boy who is stuck at home and dreams of joining a war. And so it's like, let's tell a story of a girl who is stuck in a war and dreams of going home. It was like a mirror." - Gareth Edwards, 2023
