hi this is a chapter analysis post but it starts as a "denji deserves better look at him he's so silly" post
also idk what i was expecting for this chapter but fujimoto needs to refund me for emotional loss
so chapter 117 opens like this:
denji thinks. his brain does some chemistry and he realises, HE DOESN'T WANT TO BE CONTROLLED ANYMORE. AND I LOVE HIM FOR THAT OKAY !!
so that means that fujimoto, like a lot of people thought, was really portraying a parallel between asa and makima in THIS panel from chapter 116:
anyway at this point denji is conflicted. we know that even just REALIZING that he DOESN'T WANNA BE CONTROLLED LIKE IN THE PAST is a huuuuge step forward. but he's still conflicted and then THIS SHIT FUCKING HAPPENS
the reader is BAMBOOZLED, fujimoto is probably shitting himself laughing and denji and the penguin share an heartwarming moment and yada yada. at this point denji lovers are all taking photos and screenshots while crying because THIS LITTLE BOY IS SO SILLY. i mean i knew it was going to happen eventually. i just didn't think it was going to happen NOW. it's only been three chapters (less than one day in the story's timeline) since asa started really appreciating denji. yoru doesn't even hesitate and as soon as she realizes it, BAM, "denji spinal cord sword". and that means it's THEORY TIME !!!
like yoru mentioned in the previous chapters, the more attached asa is to someone (the more guilt she feels), the more powerful the weapon will be. but then, couldn't war devil have waited even a little longer? she doesn't even know denji is chainsaw man. why did she immediately use asa's affection as an advantage?
it's not the first time war devil tries something as straightforward as that (like we saw in chapter 99 with yoshida and in chapter 100-102 with yuko). in my opinion there's something which could count as a problem for the war devil – something which leaves her little time to accomplish her goals. it could definitely be related to fami, but i think it's not just that. since i saw THIS panel (chapter 84)
i've been puzzled. both the war devil and hunger/famine devil are present in csm part 2. makima names both of them.
death isn't named, and a "death devil" has yet to appear. but i think it already appeared. here:
asa just DIED. we all know that, right? war devil confirms it. "if you want to LIVE", it says. IF you want to LIVE – meaning, asa's just died.
could asa really have made a contract while being dead? i don't think so. i think the "death devil" is helping yoru in some way here. asa at this point can't even respond properly, and she just died with a shitload of regrets, so it's obvious she'd say yes to going back. she literally tells us: "i wish i'd tried living just a little more selfishly". the death devil hands the war devil a contract on a silver platter.
previously, makima also talks about chainsaw man having eaten NUCLEAR WEAPONS. she reveals it to kishibe in chapter 84. and guess what war devil has to say about it in chapter 98?
having said that, i think that the death and war devil are helping each other, but famine has other plans. something like that. i also assume that, if a "death devil" ever appears, not only is it going to be as strong as the hell devil, but its powers are also going to have something to do with time – since yoru doesn't have any, it would be great for her to have such an ally. also time is a recurring topic in csm. we obviously know it at this point, but aki doesn't have time because he's going to die. not disappear, not leave japan, not ending up cursed or smth. in csm "lack of time" and "death" are strictly related.
i also believe that by not letting nayuta appear very often now, fujimoto is definitely trying to hide us something. nayuta's previous nature could definitely be crucial to the rest of the plot now. i really can't tell if makima will ever make a comeback, but i think whatever is leaving yoru with no time has to do with the control devil. at least with her previous actions.
