When police officers, rich people, and other people with power are violent, it's because they know they'll be respected no matter what they do.

When oppressed people fight back and are violent, it's because they know they'll be hated no matter what they do.

You can't accurately compare them.

More than that, powerful people know they'll be safe no matter what they do, and commit harm out of entitlement because basically all our legal and social structures reinforce their right to commit that harm. They often believe they're doing a good thing by reinforcing the hierarchy and putting vulnerable people in "their place".

Oppressed people fighting back know what they're never really safe in the current structure and that they need to protect themselves because the current social and legal structures are meant to oppress rather than protect them.

Unfortunately, this handily illustrates why there's a large group of people in the middle who know they are only safe if they keep their heads down and don't get involved.

Hence by bystander apathy in times of upheaval and unrest. It is simultaneously their privilege not to be in danger if they keep quiet AND their disadvantage not to be safe if they don't.

Those of us in that position (because that may or may not include me given my openly queer, genderfluid, neurodivergent, disabled, pagan spirit working self, but it historically tends to include my family) would do well to side with the people fighting for their right to exist. But we know we lose our own right to exist if we do that. So many don't.

If we ever want to stop being in that position, though, we have to risk it.

I don't blame the people with dependents, small children, etc. for playing it safe.

But if all you have to risk is yourself, please help to the limit of your ability, not just the limit of your fear?

It should also be noted that this alliance is exactly what the ones in power are afraid of.

Why do you think the Top spends SO MUCH effort on making sure the Middle and the Marginalized know we're not the same, reinforcing constantly that we are somehow in competition, that the Margins are a threat to the Middle.

The Margins aren't a threat to the Middle, they're evidence of the threat the Top presents to the Middle, and thus a threat to the TOP.

Because the Middle is the army the Margins need to stop being Margins, waiting to be recruited. So the Top puts a whole hell of a lot of effort into making sure the Middle can't be recruited, will respect them no matter what atrocities they commit, can't afford to stick their necks out, believe the Margins as the problem, is not trusted by, nor trustworthy for said Margins, and so forth.

The single biggest thing we can possibly do to threaten the Top is ally the Middle with the Margins.

That's what all this "Awareness Raising" is about and why it's not fruitless, and why the Top and Top-wannabes complain about "Woke" and "Cancel Culture" and shit, and try to suppress the power of the Middle and the alliance with the Margins with selective law enforcement, voter suppression, etc.

The more the Margins succeed in gathering the Middle, the bigger a threat we all are to the Top.
