Ben McDaniel’s parents believe two things: That their 30-year-old son dived into an underwater cave in Vortex Springs in Florida on the 18th of August, 2010. And that he is dead. What happened in between those two events has completely turned their life upside down.

Ben was an avid diver; his parents lived just a short distance from Vortex Springs and he was there weekly. While he frequented the spring, he never received sufficient training and wasn’t experienced. The spring consists of of a 200ft basin which leads to an underground cave system. At the entrance to the grace is an ominous sign, warning divers that continuing past that point could be dangerous. In the 1990s, 13 divers perished in the cave.

On the 20th of August, it was noticed that Ben’s car was still in the parking lot where it had remained for two days. Witnesses came forward to say they had encountered Ben on the evening of the 18th of August. He was descending down into the cave. He reached the lock gate which is only opened for experienced divers and tried to give the gate open. Eduardo Taran, an experienced diver who worked at the springs, witnessed this and opened the gate for him. This was the last time he was ever seen.

The spring was closed while his disappearance was investigated. There was no sign of a struggle at his car and his belongings say untouched. Over the forthcoming years, police and experienced divers alike have searched every nook and cranny of the cave system. Many divers are adamant that Ben isn’t inside the cave. Some theorise that he was murdered while others theorise he faked his own death. His family, however, are sure that he is dead and that his body still remains submerged. Nevertheless, his body has never been found.

Personally, I wouldn’t include Hostel, Natural Born Killers, or Se7en (although I love the second 2, I don’t think they’re particularly disturbing).  I would have included (in a different order, I’m sure) May and The Poughkeepsie Tapes.  Although I have my gripes about the latter in terms of film making, it’s definitely disturbing.  Other than that, I think this list is pretty good.

Serial killer Ian Brady is photographed with his biological mother, Peggy Stewart.

Peggy was single and unmarried when she gave birth to Ian in Glasgow in 1938. The identity of his biological father has never been established, though it’s widely believed that he was a journalist who died before Ian was born.

Peggy’s job as a waitress did not pay very well ,so she allowed Ian to be fostered by the Sloane family, who gave Ian their last name. Peggy regularly visited her son and celebrated milestones with him and his adoptive family. Ian grew extremely close to her, and she was one of few people whom he showed genuine affection to as an adult.

The Seven Phases of Serial Murder

Serial offenders often develop an antisocial pattern of behavior long before they act upon the urge to kill. Unlike ‘crimes of passion’ - where murder occurs within the heat of the moment - serial killers can spend months, even years, developing their violent fantasies and working up the courage to act them out.

1. Withdrawal from reality

Serial offenders often experience a period of withdrawal when they first develop their murderous fantasies. This usually happens after the onset of puberty, and the connection between sex and violence is first made. The offender is compelled to seek out violent pornography, and may begin torturing animals or setting fires. Other offenders become ‘Peeping Toms’. This stage can last months or years, depending on the individual.

2. Exploration

The offender begins seeking out potential victims and continues to fantasize about what they want to do to them. Over time, these fantasies become very elaborate and all-consuming. The offender may also begin researching various ‘body dump’ sites, and collecting symbolic items like knives or rope.

3. Stalking

The offender begins actively stalking potential victims, and practises approaching them in a manner that will gain their trust. He may present himself as a person of authority, or become friendly with authority figures (only organized serial killers tend to go through this phase).

4. Capture

The offender is now purposefully looking for someone to kill. They may use stealth and sudden violence to overpower a victim, or they may charm their victim until the offender feels secure to begin the assault.

5. Murder

The offender finally realizes their fantasy and kills their intended victim. At this point, the offender is sexually satisfied and carries out their pre-planned method of body disposal (if they have one).

6. Evasion/Satisfaction

The offender remains excited and on edge once they see their crime reported on the news. If they took away a trophy from their victim, the offender will often keep it as a reminder of their crime and use it as a symbolic sexual aid. The offender feels invincible when/if the police fail to capture him.

7. Depression

The initial rush of killing someone has worn off and the offender begins to fantasize again. Feelings of guilt/fear may encroach at this stage, and the offender may commit suicide or hand themselves in. If they dont, the offender goes back to Phase 4, and the cycle begins again.
