Michael and Thom photo masterpost

can u bless us with some little known facts/stories about the band blease
I’m honored that you asked me this question now because of this I completely forgot everything about Radiohead because that’s life so I asked Kid Gay and here’s what we came up with (some of these might be well known but whatever)-Ed was once mistaken for a Chippendale stripper-According to Thom, during the recording of The National Anthem he was conducting the horns so intensely he broke his ankle-Thom recorded the vocals on Planet Telex laying down drunk af also Jonny I think laid the guitar part down while he was sick af so-according the Sophie Jonny left a recording of Planet Telex cause the band was drinking and he was tired-According to Thom the way to get with Jonny is to get him drunk-Jonny was only a harmonica player on one song when he joined the band-Abingdon tried to charge them to use the music room during their rehearsals on fridays-Those stories about the time Ed and Jonny bunked together and he would sleep talk like Ed time Ed started yelling at Jonny to fuck off and Jonny apologized and left also the time Ed was a radio dj in his dream and he would pause for songs he was playing in his dream-Thom literally wrote every frame from the pop is dead video and I hate him-My personal favorite story is when they played a show and they were loading up the van and this guy was waiting outside and told Thom “you did amazing you played that guitar like it was your penis”And finally,-Jonny does not look like handsome squidward
ooh can we add on???
- apparently Thom’s first words to Phil at their inaugural rehearsal were “can’t you play any fucking faster” (so starting as he meant to go on)
- Ed played cricket at school, a write up of a match in the newsletter mentions him “chancing his arm to good effect” thus making him the only member of Radiohead with even the remotest hint of sporting aptitude
- the “kicking squealing Gucci little piggy” line was inspired by a woman Thom saw in a bar having a massive temper tantum after someone spilled red wine on her.
- “Just” was the result of a competition between Thom and Jonny to see who could get the most chords into a song (these children will never change, i swear)
- there was a show on the HTTT tour when the opening band were late, which meant Radiohead wouldn’t be able to play their full set without breaking the 11pm curfew. they paid the $10,000 fine in order to give their fans a full show (i have no idea if this is true, i just read it on Reddit, but i want it to be because it’s cool)
- i’m sure i read somewhere about Colin working as a librarian while he was doing his English degree at Cambridge…. something about an incident where some white supremacist had a go at him because apparently the library had too many books by black writers? (poor Coz)
- Ed was not mistaken for one of the Chippendales, he was moonlighting with them and just got rumbled (source: me)
- Ed was referred to as Eddie in the Abingdonian (just a delightful fact), and was also captain of the cricket team
-Jonny played rugby and was referred to as “big and determined, if a little lacking in physical co-ordination at the present”
- Ed and Colin both acted often in Abingdon, with Ed getting some pretty main roles
- Thom would also write music for these performances and perform it himself, sometimes on bass
okay big, determined, and tripping over his own feet is basically how i picture Jonny attempting any kind of sport
but i think Ed said something in a recent interview to this effect, the first time he noticed Jonny at school was on a rugby pitch because he was a head above all the other kids, he must have got his growth spurt early bless
More facts yay!!!!! I too have some more!
-Thom used to write for the Abingdonian which was the school newspaper and his name was written as Tom and to this day I’m still uncomfortable
-Thom took a gap year after high school before going to Exeter to study studio art
-Colin used to work at a record store in Oxford and while he was there he gave a demo tape to a guy who worked A&R at EMI which got them signed so Radiohead wouldn’t be here without Colin and neither would Jonny so uh…. Colin changed the music industry ?
-Ed once got busted for giving porn magazines to other kids and when his father found out he told him “that’s my boy” or something to the effect
-Thom stole Jonny from his brother’s band
-Colin also had a job in college where he booked bands to play on Fridays and I think thats just neat
-Thom had a job selling suits before the band got signed and he hated that job
-Oh another personal favorite that I read in a book, Thom’s dad used to be a boxer in college and therefore wanted to teach Thom how to box but every time his dad would fake fight with him he would just fall over
oh i can throw in a few more, particularly dealing with my highly specialized knowledge of anything to do with illness:
- to correct a fact up there, jonny was too ill to stand during the recording of his part for Sulk, not telex. mexico’s revenge, he called it.
- the lyrics for my iron lung was written the day the band called out of reading festival in ‘93 because thom’s throat was so fucked up he couldnt even talk. combo of overuse and nerves, he said, i think.
- poor guy actually passed out during one concert. munich 1995; band tried to call out of the concert because thom’s voice was suffering again (he’d had laryngitis on the american tour and it came back in germany); they couldn’t get the promoter to cancel it and when he lost his voice during creep he freaked out and threw things around in a panic before passing out.
- nme reported the above incident as him just being a drama queen and that he stormed off, not collapsed, and this led to him refusing to talk to them for 5 years
- astoria 1997 the band was supposed to do an all b-sides show for the fan club. it didnt quite pan out that way because thom developed food poisoning after the previous night’s concert… but they still did the concert anyways. not all b-sides as he obvs didnt have the energy to rehearse all that but it was a killer setlist nonetheless
- australia 2004 thom had a nasty throat infection, again, that caused them to cancel their second melbourne show because thom risked doing permanent damage to his voice if he sang that night. there was worry he wouldnt recover in time to headline coachella.

So apparently this is what the inside of Jonny’s brain looks like? Not surprising.
obviously Colin was handing him the pens
