The ancient world was full of textile masterpieces we can only imagine… but most of them have rotted away. So few of them have come down to us in these days that we think of metal and stone as the primary mediums for the oldest artworks. But there were tapestries and fabric work that would have rivaled the finest wrought gold and iron and the first cave paintings.

This is a incredibly rare find. A ball of yarn made from stinging nettle fibers in the Late Neolithic (5900 years old) in what’s now Marin-Epagnier in Switzerland. The thread has been preserved by being carbonized. Look at how much thread that is! And how fine and even it is spun! The skill going into this is absolutely incredible. Imagine the incredible textile work that must’ve been made with that. For a reference here’s a ball of nettle yarn I managed to make with a drop spindle. That took me 300 hours of work.

Reminder that what we call muslin today is not even a pale shadow of what our ancestors knew by that name. Industrialization made cloth less expensive and more available, but it also shut down the artisans and craftspeople who knew how to make truly fine cloth with modest materials.

In The Philosopher’s Stone, Hagrid tells Dumbledore that baby Harry fell asleep as they flew over Bristol. To fly over Bristol, going in the direction of Surrey, you’d have to be coming from Wales. Nowhere else makes sense geographically. Therefore, Godric’s Hollow is in Wales. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Goku is on Namek fightin that Frieza guy…Goku uhh…flyin or doin somethin over there…

for context’s sake: this is from JBVO, a show hosted by Johnny Bravo where you could call in and request your favorite episode of a CN show and Johnny would play it for you. for the most part it worked out pretty smoothly since at the time cn’s shows mostly had an average episode length of 7 to 11 minutes.

but one day a viewer requested that they play their favorite episode of dragon ball z, a show with 23-minute long episodes. due to time constraints with both dbz AND jbvo they had to work a compromise: a sped up version of the requested dbz episode played with johnny narrating over it so people understood what’s going on

look i dislike the corporate artstyle book cover trend as much as the next person but we cant pretend every book looking the same is something new. if you stepped into a bookstore in 2013 there would be approximately 57 books whose cover art consisted of a girl in a ballgown with her back half-turned to the camera photoshopped into a vaguely fantasy-like landscape. i was 11 years old fighting for my life to find the right maximalistic girl and her single-adjective book title we cannot forget the horrors i went through please be respectful of my experiences

donating to Wikipedia is so funny. I had a prepaid gift card I wanted to kill off so I donated like $2.11 and got a reply email that was just "Thank you so much. I owe you my life. You are the most important person in the universe I love you" and then dead silence for a full year before "hey... last year.. you gave us two dollars. It was the nicest thing anyone has ever done for us. Would you possibly be willing to do it again? No worries if not. Sorry to bother you. I love you"

So our cat Ravioli sometimes does this thing we've started calling a Ravioli jumpscare where he'll hide next to a door or behind a piece of furniture and wait for us to pass next to him and jump at us lifting both his front paws in the air. So sometimes I'll be working on the living room while my husband is in the bedroom and he'll notice the cat crouching down next to the door and he'll be like "babe can you come in for a sec? The cat wants to jumpscare you"

don't forget during the WGA strike that animation is not covered under the WGA deals and as a result animation has gotten the shortest possible end of the stick in under-staffing, under-paying, and generally turning the field into gig employment.

please sign the petition here for Disney to recognize animation production workers as a union and reblog this post!

i'm a few hours in to tears of the kingdom and the vibe i'm getting so far is that link is the hylian version of tony hawk. they've all heard of him but none of them recognize him by sight
