WWII alternate history stories always go “What if the Nazis won.” WHAT IF THE JEWS LIVED?
That’s actually such a good point about alternative history. So many ask “what if we got the bad ending?”, ignorant of the fact we did, that’s just a worse ending.
Asking “what if the Nazis won” allows one to live in the safe world where the Nazis were the root source of evil in WWII. Asking “what if the Jews lived” forces you to confront the fact that almost all of Europe was complicit in their eradication. Every European power, the United states, everyone involved hated the Jewish people. Everyone was complicit in antisemitism, everyone just sat back and let it happen.
It took an invasion of Poland for the UK and France to act, and it took a direct attack on the US for the US to officially get involved. All of the torture, enslavement, and murder of Jews before this were overlooked because not even below the surface, the German antisemitism wasn’t unique. And basically nobody has the guts to address that.
i’ve been thinking lately about the jews of salonika (now called thessaloniki, in greece)
salonika was once the largest jewish city in the world, and in the 16th century it was the only majority jewish city in the world. jews fled there over centuries, from all over europe, from all kinds of conflicts. many of them came from spain after the inquisition.
at its height salonika had 33 synagogues to serve all of its jewish communities. most of them were named for the areas its congregants had fled from: Mayorka. Provincia. Italia. Sicilia. Portugal. Catalan. there was also one just named Shalom.
between 1941 and 1943 the axis powers came for the jews of salonika. 60,000 people were deported, the majority of whom were murdered. when survivors attempted to return, many found that their homes had been sold to christian families. today, the jewish population of thessaloniki is only 1,200.
every time i think about this (and the holocaust in general) i struggle to comprehend the sheer scale of what was lost. of the futures that were snuffed out. the culture that can only be experienced as a history lesson. i wonder what kind of place thessaloniki would be now if its jewish population hadn’t been systemically erased.
this post has made me realize why “what if the nazis won” has always made me so sick to my stomach. the people asking it have never had to grapple with what that means for them.

I can run to the store or have it delivered, but both of those are likely to take so long that by the time I get my veggie oil, I'll have lost the motivation to bake.
Look one of the most overlooked symptoms of ADHD is time blindness, and with it there's only three times:
- The past (poorly remembered)
- Right the fuck now (the only time that is real. Finally, for the first time, you are awake)
- The future (may never come. Do not trust. Next week might as well be "in a billion years after the sun goes cold")

It’s also very important to look at how these laws are used.
For the laws criminalizing pot, white people (usually youth) often get off with a slap on the wrist, but BIPOC get harsh sentences, including prison time. Same goes for traffic offences (including DUI). Also laws for loitering, gangs and so on are used much more often against BIPOC - people are being denied their freedom of movement or just being allowed to be out in public without being afraid of being arrested.

Happy birthday, Angela Davis! (January 26, 1944)
A prominent and influential Black Marxist feminist intellectual and activist, Angela Davis was born and raised in Jim Crow Birmingham, Alabama. Her activism started early, as she marched against segregation as a Girl Scout. Her involvement in the communist movement began in high school, and deepened during her undergraduate education in West Germany. She moved to California to pursue her graduate degree, and had a brief and tumultuous stint as a professor at UCLA, where she was fired for being a communist, rehired by court order, and fired again for her political beliefs. Davis became a cause celebre for progressives and the left when she was put on trial for murder for having purchased weapons later used in a killing. She was ultimately found not guilty. She continued her activism and academic work with her increased public profile, and was the Communist Party's candidate for Vice President in 1980 and 1984. She terminated her long association with the Party in 1991, helping to found the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism. Davis has written a number of books on feminist, Marxist, and Black struggle, including Are Prisons Obsolete? and Women, Race and Class.
