Nothing But Sweet Lullabies

@daydreamtonightmare

there's so much utena discourse around certain aesthetic signatures of the show (in particular, scenes and shots like the sword pulls, the transformations and outfits, etc.) and, like, surface-level discussions over whether these things are "Actually Beautiful" or "Actually Bad."

and i totally get it, especially with regards to some scenes---like the ways in which people have taken the ending scene of episode 33 and turned into weird pastel-pretty aesthetic boards lmao----but i do feel like a lot of the discussion is over-simplistic, and disconnected from the actual framing and themes of the series

utena and anthy's world is full of beauty. it is also full of horror and pain. there is often no clear delineation between the two, and we are forced (quite generously!) to recognize both sides of this.

the sword pulls oftentimes carry feelings of manipulation, hurt, subservience. anthy summoning the sword drives in the repetitive, obedient actions she is forced to repeat time and time again for others as the rose bride. in the black rose arc, they're violent and terrifying. in the third arc, they're stand-ins of the dysfunctions the characters have with the person drawing them, the ways in which their emotions are being twisted and ignored.

and yet! they're beautiful.

they're incredibly intimate moments, in which the two characters---who, generally speaking, are either emotionally or physically estranged from one another---cradle or hold one another, pull out a culmination of that person's essence, as a heavenly light frames the two of them together. the first time anthy does it to utena, it is out of genuine fear for her, her voice quivering with fear as she tries to do anything to help her! it's love! it's an act of beautiful love!

when pressed on how it felt to have their sword drawn, the duelists are flustered---they can't say it was just painful, because it was more than just painful. the screams of the black rose arc turn into something more quiet, ethereal, pretty---and yet still uneasy, unsettling.

All our stories are the same.

No matter how different we appear,

within each person lies

a bride,

a prince,

and a blade

sharp enough to pierce the soul.

Wilbur has never had wings. He has long since resigned himself to that fact. However much of his father’s blood runs through his veins, it is not enough to grant him that gift.

Wilbur comes back to life, and his back begins to ache.

(word count: 6,141)

———————

It’s stupid, but when his back first begins to ache, he assumes it’s old age.

The thing is that he doesn’t have any real frame of reference for what constitutes as old and what does not. His father is old, but his father has lived for literally thousands of years. Technoblade is not quite so old as that, but Technoblade never dies is more than just a catchphrase. Tommy is young, he’s sure of that much, but Tommy has days where he wakes up and his head and ribs won’t stop aching, remnants of that third death that have never quite left him, so Tommy is perhaps not the best gauge of what pains are and are not normal for a young person.

Wilbur doesn’t think that he’s particularly old. He’s still not yet thirty, unless he counts the void years. Then, he’s older than thirty. Then, he’s older than his own bones. He tries not to dwell on the void years, because dwelling on the void years gives him urges that he’s still learning how to ignore. Urges like informing everyone gaily and at length when the inevitable heat death of the universe will be, or giving everyone a graphic description of what happens at a microscopic level in the human body when it picks up a stomach bug.

The point is, he’s not very old. But he feels it, a lot of the time, so when he wakes up one morning and his back is killing him, he shrugs it off and goes about his day. It hurts, sure. It hurts kind of a lot. But he’s had worse. The void took him apart molecule by molecule and put him back together again so many times that he learned to love it, and compared to that, this is nothing at all.

Link deserves to go absolutely fucking feral. He has several incarnations of repressed rage in that one little soul and he's fed up with it. He deserves to beat the living shit out of the demon king for all the other Links that have been and will be and all the Zeldas that had to suffer because of the curse and who couldn't live the lives they wanted. He should go bat shit crazy for all the suffering in this one little guy. For the children that fell under the curse and had to grow up too fast. For the parents that had to raise Hylia's chosen ones knowing their lives would constantly be in danger. For the regular folk that live in fear of calamity. For the life he never got to live. For the whole dying thing. For the taking his girlfriend. For everything. He deserves at least that.

Just my hopes for episode 12 before it came out. We kinda got there! More people reminding Vash he’s loved please :’‘>

Please don’t tag this with ship tags, thanks!

Let’s talk about Vash’s riding/animal husbandry. I noticed this in the episode where he and Wolfwood left on the birds, and was further prompted by this post by @moodysnowflake that mentions the way he properly holds his reins (thank you).

I have been riding for 20 something years (I’m old) and I noticed Vash’s riding and care for his bird immediately.

A horse’s trot is a diagonal two beat gait, it’s very bouncy unless slowed to a jog (this lessens the suspension). With birds having two legs, I’m thinking that’s a decent comparison and they’re pretty bumpy - especially at fast speeds.

If you look at the gifs, Vash is balanced evenly right and left, and he stays over his legs and with his bird’s movement in a longitudinal sense (he’s not too far forward or back). Edit to add: it looks like he’s in 2-point where his hips and heels are in line, and upper body is a bit forward, which is appropriate for riding a gait and speed like that (would reduce impact on himself and the bird).

And he lets his joints (ankles, knees, core/lower back) absorb the movement- while his hands are SUPER QUIET (they don’t bounce, they look very still while the rest of him moves with the bird). That is exceptionally detailed and thoughtful of Studio Orange. Agghhhh so many great details!!!

I’m not… going to talk about Wolfwood. (IkIk he has that big ass cross).

Also, when Vash got off his bird he offered it a drink, which shows his compassion and good animal husbandry skills (that you take care of your animal’s needs before yourself).

My heart is so full, I’m sure I missed things…
