Laws that made it illegal for blacks and whites to be buried in the same cemetery, that categorized people into quadroons and octoroons, that punished a black person for seeking medical attention in a white hospital. Some may claim that slavery has ended. But tell that to the inmates who are kept in cages and told that they don’t have any rights at all.

A lot of the women who have stepped forward - and I stand in solidarity with them - what they’re getting paid, which is half of what a man is getting paid, well we get probably a tenth of what a Caucasian woman gets. And I’m number one on the call sheet. And then I have to go in and I have to hustle for my worth.
That’s why you need to know people. People with power. People that have influence, fix problems. I know who that is.
People don’t understand that when you grow up poor, you don’t have access to anything. My father, when his gallbladder was bothering him and he had an infection, he had to get up, walk three miles to the hospital in 12 degree weather. Got to the hospital to sit for another five hours, before the doctor said, “You gotta go home. You look like you’re a drug addict.” He leaves the hospital, he walks three miles back home, he sits for another three days, before gangrene starts setting in. Then he walks back to the hospital and they finally admitted him.
