“If being human is not simply a matter of being born flesh and blood, if it is instead a way of thinking, acting and feeling, then I am hopeful that one day I will discover my own humanity. Until then, I will continue learning, changing, growing, and trying to become more than what I am.”
sometimes watching star trek is like "how did this shit get approved" and it's 45 minutes of the most homosexual activity you'll ever see on screen that probably barely got past the censors and sometimes it's like "how did this shit get approved" and it's 45 minutes of the worst writing you'll ever see y'know

[id: 8 gifs from season 3, episode 14 “heart of stone” from the tv series “star trek: deep space nine”, the gifs show julian bashir, and benjamin sisko walking through the promenade.
1st, 2nd gif: julian and sisko are walking in tandem, sisko asks “I see you’ve put in a request to reassign Ensign Vilix'pran from cargo inspection.” julian takes a breath before replying, “I think that would be best. Given his condition, I don’t want him coming into contact with any hazardous materials.”
3rd & 4th gif: sisko asks, “his condition?” and julian elaborates, “vilix'pran is budding. his buds are undergoing individuation in just over a month.” sisko is elated with the realisation, “you mean, he’s pregnant.” julian confirms, “twins.” “ah. reassignment granted.”
5th gif: “i’ll have to make sure I offer my congratulations to the ensign the next time i see him.“ sisko continues.
6th & 7th gif: “well, o'brien and i are throwing him a baby shower in a couple of days. i think it would mean a lot to him if you were there.” julian informs sisko. “are you getting him anything?” sisko asks, “o'brien’s building him a hatchling pond and i’ve put an order in with garak for some new baby clothes.”
8th gif: sisko and julian come to a pause. “count me in.” sisko tells julian and claps him on his shoulder, “aye, sir.” sisko walks away with a smile, he speaks to himself, “ensign pran… hmm.” /id end]
the reason we never see garak and bashir do sherlock holmes holodeck larping was that unlike geordi and data they both wanted to be holmes and they couldn't convince the other one to switch. garak would be like but you're a real doctor and bashir would be like yeah but i'm also a genius and garak would be like well i'm mysterious and aloof and a drug addict and bashir would be like well i'm taller. and it goes on and on so eventually they just book a holosuite thinking the other one will change their mind but then they both show up in sherlock holmes cosplay and they both refuse to go home and change, and they try to do the story with two holmeses but it just devolves into them arguing for two hours until quark kicks them out and they never try it again. so unfortunately we never get to see that episode but it would have been so funny if it existed
doctor, this hardly seems necessary!
perhaps you'd better trust my medical judgment - after a fall like that you can never be too careful.
happy late valentines day lizardkissers
Thinking abt Star Trek and the Federation and like... how the Federation is a post-scarcity world with a lot of our bigotries long ago quashed and dissolved, but it is still a flawed and sometimes harmful system informed by the biases of its past and like. Some people take that as a means to reject the ultimate optimism of Trek, but to me, that's so essential to it?
Utopia is not an end, but a process. So much of Trek is about exploring those gray areas, where well-intentioned choices can go wrong. Yes, Star Trek is a hopeful look at the future of humanity. Yes, the Federation is a flawed establishment. Those two can both be true and, in fact, are essential for me being able to watch and appreciate it.
just realized i never showed this picture of content aware scaled picard flipping you off that i made to use as a discord emoji almost exactly a year ago. feel free to use it btw
