hey remember when pop-ups and banner ads were associated with malware? when youtube didn't have any ads at all? when you could get a cheap netflix subscription that was better than cable TV? digital marketing experts estimate that most americans see 5-10k ads every day. what the hell is going on

YouTube has never been profitable, Google is keeping it simply so other video-sharing platforms don't spring up. Ads are a desperate attempt to recoup SOME losses.

Netflix barely made money after it became a streaming site. It was sold to investors as a platform that will make a gorillion bucks SOMEDAY, they just need a high enough userbase.

Most other sites, IE, news sites also make very little money and can barely cover salaries and hosting fees. Ads and paid access are a complete necessity by this point.

Same thing with every somewhat big YouTuber. If you're not Logan Paul, you're barely making above a minimum wage worker, unless you do daily content and ad reads.

It's easy to sit and complain about how many ads we're seeing, but running shit on the internet is not cheap, has never been cheap, it's a full-time job for many people and there are very few other obvious ways to monetize.

Things like this just remind me of how unhappy I am with the death grip that Wizards of the Coast has on TTRPGs and the death grip that Games Workshop has on miniatures. Sure. There are some alternatives. But they are sparse, kind of hard to find, and don’t even a fraction of the support or spotlight that D&D and WH40K have. Like. I have found some other miniature options now. But it still wasn’t that easy and it is still a touch limited, with some of the options being proxies for 40k. I am not looking that hard for TTRPG alternatives yet because no time or flunkies…I mean friends. I honestly would love to just go to a game shop and be able to look through a bunch of TTRPG rulebooks. But any shop that has that stuff will mainly have D&D and maybe one or two alternatives. Same with WarHammer. (Star Wars is getting kind of big again though)

Like, there is a big, BIG difference between being dumb and being lazy. At least with dumb people, they have to propensity to actually want to help, but they have problems and need help.

Lazy people, on the other hand, will just not do anything and PLAY dumb. These are the people who are the ones that give people who want to help but need guidance a bad rep.

Really hate the word "lazy", because so many people use it on autistic/ADHD/depressed people without even thinking

Like, don't get me wrong, lazy people absolutely DO exist, I just have a very personal revulsion to the word, because working your ass off and still being called lazy is infuriating

Well, thankfully this post isn't about people who deal with executive dysfunction and who have autism/ADHD/depression, but about people who are just truly actually lazy. Like, I get where you're coming from, truly I do as I have all three things you mentioned, but this post isn't about executive dysfunction or anything like that, for that matter. It's about willful laziness. If I wanted to talk about those three things, I would. But I'm not. So... there you go, I guess.
