Writer, podder, sometimes weirdo. For podding policy see my AO3 (hint, it's super liberal)

One thing I love about Tumblr that wasn't a thing on Reddit is that I can just write whatever the fuck text post I want. No titles. No putting text on images. No algorithms or karma. Just fuckin splatter your mind onto the screen and people will see it. Like god intended.

It has unironically been great for my mental health. It’s like the opposite of doomscrolling. Coomscrolling? Idk

Mood I've felt marginally better past 2 days than I have in how long???

Speaking as a longtime Tumblr user

It’s doing me good to see you all here. Like we’ve had some pretty sus UX changes lately (although nowhere near on the level of what Reddit’s doing—mostly it’s been months since they introduced Tumblr Live and we’re all still mad about it), and seeing y’all come stumbling in like “oh this is COOL” is letting me take a fresh look at the site and really appreciate why I love it here.

I'm real happy to see new folks discovering and enjoying the garbage pile I've been enjoying for over a decade

One underappreciated thing about streaming television is how episodes can be howeverthefuck long they want. Exactly 38 minutes? Cool. 27 'cause this was a short storyline? Rockin. 74 'cause it's a season ender? Heck yeah.

Gone are the network requirements for commercial breaks at routine times, and a set, fixed minute count.

but what are the house queers supposed to do for pride?

Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?

Avatar

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.

Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this

End OTW Racism: A Call To Action

A fan protest against the lack of action from the OTW on addressing issues of harassment and racism on AO3 and within the organization

This is a Call To Action for Fans of Color and Allies

AO3 has acknowledged that they have a harassment & racism problem that its parent organization, the Organization for Transformative Works (OTW), needs to address. Currently, people can use AO3 to harass others through fanworks, comments, and tags. Just a few examples include: racist Untamed “spitefic” that used anti-Indigenous slurs and was written specifically to lash out at fans of color; a Transformer fic that used its Black-coded character to reenact George Floyd’s murder in July 2020; someone naming a fandom scholar who criticized their Nazi omegaverse fic in the tags of the fic specifically to incite harassment to the scholar; writers using racial slurs against commenters who pointed out racism in their hockey fic; and so much more.

In June 2020, after the murder of George Floyd, the OTW committed to addressing these issues. It has been nearly three years and they have not yet implemented any of the changes they promised, other than a blocking/muting tool that was already in development before 2020. We need to hold the OTW accountable to their own promises. (See the section further down on “Why Are We Doing This” for even more detail.)

As fans, together, we are powerful. We are organizing to protest the lack of action on promises made by the Organization for Transformative works to deal with issues of racism and harassment on their platform, Archive of Our Own.

We call on fans to do any or all of the following actions any time between May 17 to 31, 2023 to send a message to AO3 and OTW that we will hold them to their promises.

On AO3

  • Change the title of ten (or more!) of your most recent or most popular fanworks to include ‘End Racism in the OTW’ in the beginning, and provide a link to this post in your summary or first/top creator’s note
  • Post a new fanwork any time between May 17th to 31st with “End Racism in the OTW” either as the title or at the beginning of the title. The fanwork does not have to be long - it can be a 100-word fic, a quick sketch, a podfic of a ficlet, a 20-second vid/edit, a short piece of meta, etc. In the summary or first/top creator’s note, provide a link to this post
  • If updating any WIPs with a new chapter, add ‘End Racism in the OTW’ to the title and provide a link back to this post in your summary or first/top author’s note
  • Update your AO3 icon using the profile pic graphic in our Social Media Toolkit
  • Plan to maintain these changes until May 31, 2023, or longer if you wish
  • Send a message to the OTW asking for an update on their 2020 commitments!
  • For Readers: leave encouraging comments on fanworks with the "End Racism in the OTW" title to show your support of this initiative.

On tumblr

  • Reblog this Call to Action with the tag #End OTW Racism
  • Update your profile pics and banners using the graphics in our Social Media Toolkit
  • Follow this account for updates and signal boost our posts

On Twitter

  • Follow @/EndOTWRacism (remove the backslash) and signal boost our pinned tweet
  • Update your profile pics and banners using our graphics, and change your display name to include #EndOTWRacism
  • Use sample tweets and graphics from our Social Media Toolkit to tweet about your fanworks, and use the hashtag #EndOTWRacism

What Do We Want?

Since their June 2020 statement, OTW has been working on updating their Terms of Service (TOS) to address racist and bigoted harassment, but with little transparency and only the vaguest of updates. It has been three years since their commitment to this update - we want to see the results of their work implemented in the next 6-12 months. Their TOS updates and complementary policies should include:

  • Harassment policies that can be regularly updated to address both on-site harassment and off-site coordinated harassment of AO3 users, with updated protocols for the Policy & Abuse Team to ensure consistent and informed resolutions of abuse claims
  • A content policy on abusive (extremely racist and extremely bigoted) content; by abusive, we are talking about fanworks that are intentionally used to spread hate and harassment, not those that accidentally invoke racist or other bigoted stereotypes

These points are not particularly new and are not our own innovation; please refer to Stitch's article written over two years ago, asking for several of these very things.

OTW has also already committed to various process-based actions for longer-term works towards centering antiracism, including hiring a Diversity Consultant. The last update that OTW published said that the consultant would be hired within the next five years (after already having had three years to work on it since their original commitment). That is not soon enough. We want to see the following process-based actions implemented:

  • Hiring a Diversity Consultant within the next 3-6 months
  • Committing to a policy of transparency on this topic, with quarterly updates on the progress of these projects including challenges and their plan for overcoming those challenges. These quarterly updates should be published on OTW News page and newsletters, not solely discussed in Board meetings

Why Are We Doing This?

16 years ago, Astolat famously published her manifesto calling for a fandom Archive of One’s Own. In that time, AO3 has grown to be a central pillar of fandom, likely far outstripping its founders’ original vision. It is more than just an archive now; it is a central hub of the modern fannish experience. AO3 and the OTW must continue to grow and evolve with fandom over time to remain a healthy and functioning pillar of fandom. To that end, there are several areas in which the organization, as it admits itself, is lacking.

In June 2020, in the wake of the George Floyd protests and the uprising of the Black Lives Matter Movement, The OTW published a “This Week in Fandom” referencing the works of Dr. Rukmini Pande and Stitch, among others in which they discussed ‘making change for a better society’ through ‘conversations about race and racism’. In response, Dr. Pande and Stitch submitted a letter to the OTW calling for a more formal public statement than an offhand reference in a News Roundup that only served to call for thoughts and discussion without any indication the organization intended to do anything, policy wise, to address the issues being raised.

Eventually, the organization did remove the references to the works of Dr. Pande and Stitch and then made an official statement on the issue of racism within the organization and AO3. In it, they identified several things they would be prioritizing to combat harassment and benefit users. Some of those have been implemented (notably those that were already under development). However as of this writing, little else has been done especially in regards to:

  • Improving admin tools for the Policy & Abuse team
  • Reassessing the current mandatory archive warnings with the possibility of implementing others
  • And, most importantly, reviewing the Terms of Service (TOS) to allow the Policy & Abuse team to address harassment that is currently not covered by the existing TOS

By their own admission, the current tools and policies of the OTW are not sufficient to deal with issues of harassment and racism.

Several people who were involved in the founding of the OTW, including previous OTW Board members and staff on the original OTW Content Policy Committee, acknowledge that the founding of the OTW in 2008 and early board iterations failed us as a fandom by not doing enough, and by not even considering the way racism is perpetuated in fannish spaces, despite a long history of racism in fandom.

It has been nearly three years since the original commitment by the organization with little visible, measurable progress on these three crucial issues and a complete lack of transparency on where they are in regards to even beginning to deal with these issues. In fact, in Q&As, it was heavily implied by a member of the board that those calling for OTW to deal with issues of racism (which OTW had already acknowledged as a problem!) were not really fans but outside agitators.

This has cast significant doubt on the organization's sincerity and commitment to their stated goals, and on their position as leaders of a central fan tent-pole. Fans of color are not outsiders. They are right here, members of our community, and they are being harassed and targeted and driven out while space and platforms are being given to racists.

We, as fans of color and our allies, find the current state of fandom and current actions (and lack thereof) unacceptable. Fandom is our space, all of ours. We, as a fandom, have a right to a racism-free space and have a duty to our fellow fans to create that space. Unlike so much of the world, this is a space we can control and make better. It is a space we must make better. To read even more about this movement, visit our FAQs.

This is what I’m doing to the eggs:

i legit appreciate and applaud you for actually showing us what is happening here. i am in no way a master chef (or even a particularly good cook) but didn't even realize this was possible to do to scrambled eggs until your poll.

things i think may be going wrong for you here:

  1. heat too high on the burner
  2. not enough moisture added to the pan (definitely try butter instead of oil to see if it makes a difference)
  3. i have seen many folks put a little bit of milk in with the eggs while scrambling (@boxingcleverrr apparently does half and half!)
  4. scramble with a fork, not a spatula

hopefully somebody who knows more about cooking than me can give you some better tips and you soon can enjoy properly moist and fluffy scrambled eggs!

Avatar

Ummm, I have never seen anyone “scramble” an egg this way. For those who want to be in the know, I am from the Southeast US, and this is how I scramble an egg:

  1. Break however many eggs into a small bowl.
  2. Use a fork (of whisk) to whisk eggs until the yolk is broken (you may also add a small splash of milk for fluffier eggs)
  3. Turn your pan on a medium-low heat and add butter
  4. Pour eggs into pan, season to taste with salt and/or pepper
  5. Wait until the eggs are bubbling slightly at the edges
  6. Using a fork, small spatula, or small whisk (depending on the type of pan you’re using), start to gently scrape the eggs toward the center of the pan, keep scraping until the eggs are firm but moist
  7. Now you have successfully scrambled eggs

@platypusisnotonfire please do update us if you try any of the tips/directions in the notes and it works out better for you!!!

i am officially Emotionally Invested in you having good scrambled eggs.

OK so former cooking school worker here.

  1. at about 1:10 of the video is where I woulda stopped cooking those eggs - they finish coagulating on the plate and they'll be creamy and more delicious
  2. DO scramble them in a bowl with a fork before throwing them in a pan and attacking them with a spoon. Bonus points if you add a pinch of salt 'cause that helps the proteins behave
  3. smaller pan smaller flame - both will help your eggs cook more evenly. IF you're really into a high flame big pan, let the flame and the pan heat first then throw the (per above) scrambled eggs onto the hot oiled/buttered surface and flash fry those fuckers

Eggs are legit hard to get good but so satisfying (and don't need to be buttered)

It’s finally done! A labor of love for sure. Started 11/13/17. Since it was just for me, it got put aside often but it was time to finish it off! #hawkeye #crochet #marvel #geekcrafts #geekcrochet #graphghan #avengers #clintbarton

I want to put this out there:

If you are trying to escape out of state (particularly Missouri) because you or a kid is trans and the lack of a job is an issue:

My work, a Fortune 50 insurance company, has its flaws, but it is hiring in Central illinois. Our entry-level claims roles are continuously hiring, pay in the mid 30k, with good benefits. The job is 50 to 75% work from home. No college degree is required. It's call center work, but honest work.

If you are in tech, there's options for that, too

I will send referrals for anyone who needs it.

We have a good PRIDE erg, with lots of trans/gnc folks out, as well as supportive parents.

In town, there's a planned parenthood with HRT, welcoming churches (if that matters to you), a local gay bar, and a drag scene. It's a college town as well with 2 major universities and a community college.

Again, not perfect (we've got our fair share of fascists, but they lost their elections. By a lot) but smaller and cheaper than chicago, which is easily accessible by train and bus.

Message me for more details if you need it, and please share.

Here's a big project I've been sitting on! All That You Love Will Be Carried Away, by our very own @ceruleancynic! And a box, naturally, building boxes for books continues to bring me immense joy.

What we have here is not just the main fic, or the main series, but also All That You Love (The High Hope Remix) alt pov short fic by byzantienne, and, a detail that I was really excited to include: the initial comment exchange between these two fantastic authors of m the first fic in the series. Did I title that second little book 'all that you meet cute will be carried away' as a silly placeholder? Did I then get super attached and refuse to change it? Uh-

Hell yeah, I refuse to be dignified about any of my favorite hobbies!

But the real secret delight here was that I've been looking for the right opportunity to get weird with boxes. Peller boxes, hinged slipcases, yes, fine, but those are like the box version of my sixfold book adventure. I'm still shooting for some parallel to my fourteenfold book, I'm looking for a way to go completely off the rails. I have some ideas, but it's hard, finding a good large chonk and a small number of equally sized texts, which made a unified and complete set, AND which excited me to work with. That might sound unnecessarily picky, but I swear, there was a good reason for it!

Oh baby. Oh baby.

This worked out so perfectly. I wanted a large book at the center of things. And I wanted two small books oriented in a different direction, placed end to end, at its edge. And I got it! I didn't want to commit too early, and it would have been heartbreaking to fail, but once the big book was together, and the preliminary typesets for the two little books were almost identical? I just HAD to try.

Tumblr is already silencing me and refusing to let me attach as many images as I want, so for this post, let's talk about the main book a little! Cute little quarto bricks are my new FAVORITE favorite thing, as I'm sure you can guess from my archives, and this one was a dream to put together.

It had to be a three-quarter leather binding, naturally. And I was sitting on some gorgeous iridescent maroon paper for endpapers (no photos in this set, it refuses to photograph well, as is the way of pretty iridescent things). I spent some time agonizing over my other material, and whether to use two different marbled patterns, but I went with it in the end. The vibes were distinct enough but the palettes overlapped enough that I really enjoyed the effect. And with the northcott art of marbling fabrics (my beloved) I was able to use lines of symmetry to get some nice fussy cuts for the big book and the little ones. All of the books have leather endbands, matching the spine. And the big book has the big thick faux raised bands I tried out with my last svsss! I don't have enough pictures to show off all the book interiors, but I used this cover plate for the series and main fics within it.

And then, like I showed you above, I put it all together. Marbled paper and silk moire for covering the box, a lot of very tense wrangling of glued-up paper in very small spaces, and, at one point, carefully lowering glue-covered pieces of moire bookcloth down these little pits (walls already covered) using that tab in the front like the world's awkwardest elevator shaft. But the EFFECT!

I'm very, very pleased with myself, and delighted to have delivered this book to its new home. I've been absolutely VIBRATING with a desire to share, so! I can't be contained by tumblr's image limit. Hold on for two seconds (approx.) and I'm going to reblog this post with some wip pictures and more detail about how I worked this thing out and assembled this box and modified my initial design on the fly

Now, all the BONES

So, the first and most logical step was to get the big book as close as possible to its final dimensions before I made my next move. I prefer to work on all the things at once, but something would have one hundred percent gone wrong here. I had the text on my computer, but I couldn't commit to margins and sizes until I knew how big the physical books needed to be. I'm pretty sure I took this photo because that was when I was finally able to get those measurements, haha

Then I was able to subtract the square for my boards (I hoped) and get dimensions for my text blocks that I would have to print and cut to very precisely. NERVEWRACKING. The guillotine.... I love her, but she is a vicious, unforgiving thing. But it worked! And here, I'm pretty sure I was checking how I liked the small books with the cover fabric before I FULLY fully committed. You can see the back of those endpapers here! The front is like that, but shiny.

Then, the books were made. The dimensions looked about right, and it was time for Box. I have the Hollander's book that talks about making and covering a divided tray, so I felt confident! An unjustified amount of confident. But that's just my usual operating mode when it comes to crafts.

First issue: I didn't want those little books to get stuck in their little pit traps. I thought about doing a little curved divot at the top edge. But precisely cutting board this thick can be dicey, and I was also realizing that I would have just over a finger's width of space to work inside those spaces once the walls were all up. So I made a VERY good call and took a slice out of the wall all the way from top to bottom on the front and back of the little books. Nice and easy to pinch and extract!

Meanwhile, the rest of the tray was just a nice normal clamshell. I considered putting a wall on the back, but first, it's harder to delicately extract an eight hundred page brick with two fingers, and second, that spine turned out pretty and deserves to be seen. So I glued that all up, and then test fitted my books. You'll note that I hadn't titled the little books yet! I was pretty sure they would get spine titles, but was also waiting to see what would work best with the box. In the end, the holes were perfect for a bonus additional bit of titling.

Then it was time to COVER. The truly nervewracking part began. I decided to cover the front with a continuous piece, even though I'm not sure it's totally visible with the size of the pattern vs my gaps, then cut down the middle of each piece and turned it in. You can see how much space I had to work with getting down into those wells, haha. And they were MARGINALLY deeper than my fingers were long, so I did the bottom bits with careful poking from bone folders and a cheap dull letter opener I use for tiny spaces

I didn't take any pictures of me covering the rest of the interior because it was MUCH more nervewracking than expected, and I was increasingly afraid I would mess up something unrecoverable and have to start over. The last step, after the walls were done, was to cover the floors. Again, silk moire with one side covered in glue, carefully lowered down a pit already lined with fancy paper... twice. And then the main floor, which was easy, so I saved it for last, haha. But it worked!!

The rest was nice and easy! I built my other tray just fine. Three unbroken walls felt like a leisurely walk in the part by this time. And then I made the outer case for the trays. The very final step was to title it with foil, as seen in the first post up above!

But I do also have one bonus shot for you, an initial photo from the inside of that main tray, where the little book holes are visible. This box truly stretched my mind in new ways, and I had SUCH an incredible time figuring it out! It looks much fancier in midday light rather than at midnight, and on a clean table rather than my active work zone. But this is a project where I think the progress photos are so cool and fun, and I just had to share them with you all :D

For those in the tags saying "IS THIS TRUE" the answer is yes. It wasn't a full-on cuffing by cops or mugshot, but according to multiple sources, he has been indicted for 34 felony charges for falsification of business records connected his hush money payments to Stormy Daniels (although it's still sealed so we don't know for certain YET). Yeah, a pretty tame charge all things considered, but it's like Al Capone I guess.

But today is his hearing (which we won't be seeing unfortunately) in New York, and by entering the courthouse, he is legally within the custody of the police, meaning that by all legal definition, he is under arrest. Unfortunately, it's not the Big Event with him getting thrown in prison or jumpsuits or mugshots or handcuffs, but this is the first time a former U.S. President has been under arrest, so it's still a pretty big deal, and considering the multiple other investigations against him (most notably the one in Fulton County where they're investigating him calling the Secretary of State and telling him to "find more votes"), so I'm really hoping this is only the beginning, and in this country where rich people never get any consequences, we take the victories we can get.
