Halloween Treats masterpost

Hey Fab Bats! You know the drill. Every day is Halloween yadda yadda Ministry-said-so etc etc Al Jourgensen-did-something-weird-again and so forth and so on. Besides drunk punks, commercial Halloween is mostly made up of three things: Michael Myers, Merchandise and Munches. Two of those only come year round of which one got it’s head chopped off by Jamie Lee Curtis. That leaves us with the yums. As Halloween food is the best food, there is no reason why you can’t eat it year round. Now let’s quit yakin’ and cut to the crunch:

Candy Corn:

Pumpkin:

Cakes and Cookies:

Candy and Snacks:

Healthy:

Drinks:

What do you think makes Halloween? Any favorite treats? Have you had a glass of water today? If not you should. It is important to stay hydrated.

@starbugg definitely should use some of these ideas! ❤️

Disney’s Pencil Test for Frozen (2013)

I don’t think Disney is aware that their movies look so much better in two dimensions

That comment reminds me of another comment for which I can’t recall the source; paraphrased, “The best CGI now will always look outdated ten years from now, but awesome drawings will always look like awesome drawings.”

Also it was…not the best CGI

The thing I hate most about Disney not doing 2D anymore is that the box office disappointment of Winnie the Pooh (2011) (which is adorable and hilarious btw if you’ve never seen it) is often pointed to as the final nail in the coffin

Y’all released a 1 hr and 9 minute cutesy collection of Pooh Bear short stories about trying to find Eeyore’s lost tail on the SAME DAY AS THE FINAL HARRY POTTER FILM, of course it didn’t do well

AND y’all went up against YOURSELVES because Cars 2 had just opened like three weeks before and was very much still in theaters

It was not the animation, it was never the animation

I think this was an issue for The Princess and the Frog too. Not only did it come out the same month as the 2nd Chipmunk movie (which is trash but it made double what TPATF did).

You remember what came out literally one week after it?

Avatar. It went up against what was the highest grossing film of all time (until Endgame). They played themselves.

Don’t forget how Disney released one of their last 2D animated films of the era Treasure Planet on the same day as the first Harry Potter film and refused to delay the release even though they knew they would have made more money. They purposefully sabotaged their 2D animated films.

BILL, BILL, BILL!!!!

And let’s not forget

I’d never seen that last one, but my life is better for it

I just love Bill so much

I always used to be hating on Bill Nye since I didn’t like his kids videos because we were way too old to be watching them when the teachers would play them but I’ve recently realized he’s god and would like to repent.

the sequel trilogy focused so hard on ‘redeeming’ star wars after the prequels that they forgot all about the story. all three movies have great cinematography, the actors are competent and allowed to emote, the dialogue isn’t as bad as the worst of the prequels (and let’s be honest the original trilogy) but there is no overarching themes. out of all the main characters the only one who has something resembling an arc is kylo ren and the gag is he didn’t need one. he was developed well enough as an antagonist, giving him a redemption only weakened the character.

rey has so much going for her but it doesn’t really change her fundamentally. luke in episode 4 is different from luke in episode 6. the only difference between rey in the force awakens and the rise of skywalker is that she’s become ridiculously powerful. finn’s development started and ended in the force awakens. poe was fleshed out a little but jj abrams had nothing for him in tros. there is no main villain because every big bad dies without really doing anything or they become redeemed, nearly every obstacle is overcome immediately with more ease than expected. what was the point of the sequel trilogy besides making billions of dollars?

When I was younger and more abled, I was so fucking on board with the fantasy genre’s subversion of traditional femininity. We weren’t just fainting maidens locked up in towers; we could do anything men could do, be as strong or as physical or as violent. I got into western martial arts and learned to fight with a rapier, fell in love with the longsword.

But since I’ve gotten too disabled to fight anymore, I… find myself coming back to that maiden in a tower. It’s that funny thing, where subverting femininity is powerful for the people who have always been forced into it… but for the people who have always been excluded, the powerful thing can be embracing it.

As I’m disabled, as I say to groups of friends, “I can’t walk that far,” as I’m in too much pain to keep partying, I find myself worrying: I’m boring, too quiet, too stationary, irrelevant. The message sent to the disabled is: You’re out of the narrative, you’re secondary, you’re a burden.

The remarkable thing about the maiden in her tower is not her immobility; it’s common for disabled people to be abandoned, set adrift, waiting at bus stops or watching out the windows, forgotten in institutions or stranded in our houses. The remarkable thing is that she’s like a beacon, turning her tower into a lighthouse; people want to come to her, she’s important, she inspires through her appearance and words and craftwork.  In medieval romances she gives gifts, write letters, sends messengers, and summons lovers; she plays chess, commissions ballads, composes music, commands knights. She is her household’s moral centre in a castle under siege. She is a castle unto herself, and the integrity of her body matters.

That can be so revolutionary to those of us stuck in our towers who fall prey to thinking: Nobody would want to visit; nobody would want to listen; nobody would want to stay.

Tropes don’t have fixed meanings. A trope you’ve always thought of as oppressive could be empowering for someone, somewhere, if written through the lens of inclusion, love, and liberation.

I’m left wondering about the obvious follow-up to this: are there fantasy stories about disabled princesses who can’t leave the tower because they just can’t move very well? Who still get to be important in the story?

I don’t know many. When I was a little kid I read The Little Lame Prince by Dinah Maria Mulock, an 1875 children’s book about a prince with paralyzed legs who is banished to a lonely tower in the desert by his uncle. His fairy godmother gives him a magic flying cloak he can sit on, which allows him to travel around his kingdom and observe the lives of his people. He grows into a wise and compassionate young man, and when the people rise up in revolt against his uncle’s misrule, he becomes their enlightened and beloved monarch.

I feel like that book planted a seed in me that didn’t really sprout until I became a disabled adult. I wonder what it’ll turn into.

Please reblog, this is so important.

I needed this

Is this foreal?

Yes it’s a real service. I do volunteer work for a rape crisis support service in my city and texting is one of the features we provide as well. But just to boost its credibility, I tried it myself:

reblog to save lives!

You can also text “Steve” to 741741 if you’re a young person of color. The website for more info is stevefund.org

My understanding is that it’s more multicultural and some folks feel more comfy with that in mind!

Hamilton Things

- Historically and in the play, Philip died at the age of 19. He lived through 19 songs in the play (Dear Theodosia through Stay Alive [Reprise])

- In his duel with George Eacker, Philip is shot on the count of seven, which is coincidentally the number he changed the melody on during his piano lessons

- “Mom, I’m so sorry for forgetting what you taught me” - perhaps this is a reference to his piano lessons when he was younger. Eliza taught him to count. Philip believes he miscounted, he believes that it was his fault he was shot on what he thought was the count of seven.

- Hamilton died at the age of 47. Including the Laurens Interlude, there are 47 songs in the musical.

- The ensemble member who plays Philip Schuyler, who gives Hamilton his blessing to marry Eliza, also plays James Reynolds, who blackmails Hamilton for sleeping with his wife, Maria.

- The “I know my sister like I know my own mind” line is sung twice by Angelica, once in Satisfied and once in The Reynolds Pamphlet, both with very seperate connotations.

- Hamilton is the first to introduce more intricate, polysyllabic raps (My Shot) as opposed to the simple beats used by Laurens, Mulligan, and Lafayette, showing his intellectual ability and innovation.

- “Fools who run their mouths off wind up dead” is directly followed by Laurens introducing himself.

- Jefferson sings in a jazzy tune because he has been away for so long and therefore missed the transition from jazz to hip hop. However, he quickly adapts as shown in Cabinet Battle #1.

- Lafayette’s increasing grasp on the English language is shown when comparing his verses in Aaron Burr, Sir and Guns and Ships.

- Angelica is the first to sing “look around, look around, at how lucky we are to be alive right now”, which Eliza continues to use throughout her life.

- Angelica raps at Hamilton’s speed because she is his intellectual equal. Eliza beatboxes because she supports him.

- “When my prayers to God were met with indifference, I picked up a pen, I wrote my own deliverence”/ “I take the children to church on Sunday, I sign of the cross at the door, and I pray. That never used to happen before”. Philip’s death drove Hamilton to religion, giving him something to rely on other than his words for the first time.

- Eliza doesn’t rap because she is quite literally given the most time, she lives to be 97.

- Not only did Eliza establish the orphanage, she also helped to establish the first school in Washington Heights. Lin could have included the words “in Washington Heights” as a reference to his other musical, but decided against it.

You’ve been doing great so far!  Let’s keep the #FocusOnAction going for My Block, My Hood, My City!  This organization is amazing and works every day to improve communities around Chicago, home of many SK productions!

Their Explorer’s Program takes kids beyond their under-resourced neighborhoods to counteract “poverty of imagination,” and show them opportunities beyond what they’re used to seeing.  Explorations in the past have included taking students to tour art galleries, to learn how to sail, to serve meals to the homeless, to explore The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., and to engage in many more educational and life experiences.  Incredible!  They also have multiple initiatives to support communities in Chicago that need it most.  The #HitTheHood initiative proactively put money and resources into the hands of community leaders to help curb violence on July 4th (a traditionally violent holiday in Chicago).  1-Day Block Club Training empowers community leaders with knowledge of technology and programs they can use to elevate the effectiveness of community organizing in Chicago.  And the Senior Viral response is making sure seniors have access to hand sanitizer, health supplements, toiletries, and food throughout this pandemic.

In short (or slightly long), they are making one of our home cities, Chicago, so much better!  Please send your support their way!  https://www.formyblock.org/donate

and don’t forget to log your donation once you’re done.  http://www.teamstarkid.com/donation-log

Women Self Defense in 1947

I’m not sure what’s the best part of this video: the fact that she’s in heels, the fact that she does the whole thing looking like she don’t give a fuck, that chick in the back just exercising and enjoying the show, or the fact that both men and women are observing this and the girls are laughing and the guys look concerned/pensive as fuck as they watch all their tactics get shut down like nothing is even happening.

… msties is it just me or is this familiar?

Some of these are moves I haven’t seen before.

Some of this looks similar to the self defense I learned in a course three or four years ago. It’s definitely got some judo in it (arm bars, throws, fighting to and from the ground). I love this lady. She is rad. I feel like she, much like the rad lady I had as my self defense teacher, would also warn the women that if they don’t think they can gouge out someone’s eyes, don’t start trying because you’ll attack better with something you can follow through on.
