was super interested in that ask + your response about The Inevitable Death of Tumblr, but especially this part: “Discord winning means a return to the mode of fandom where you need to know the right people to find the fandom spaces”. how do you personally feel about this? is it good, bad? a return to form that fandom needs, or something that will continue to break people further into incompatible factions?

At the point that death threats are commonplace, we're already in thoroughly incompatible factions.

I don't have strong feelings about whether we need it or don't. I think we do need to get off of Twitter, but it wouldn't have to be Discord.

I've found the transition to Discord pretty easy and natural as opposed to my long adjustment period to Tumblr, but many people are finding it hellish. I too dislike overly fast discords and have many of the objections other people have, but I'm in some slower ones that are fine.

I think, broadly, we've gotten too used to having instant access to everything. It was always an illusion to some degree. And for many really tight communities, you can't just add people willy-nilly without ruining that little pod. I'm talking the difference between a dinner party with your besties and what happens when you add a new person to your social circle: sometimes, it's awesome, but sometimes, it throws off the whole vibe. Fans are quick to call this cliquishness, but it's just how socializing with humans works. You can't mandate feelings. People are rightly cautious in that kind of situation, but that shouldn't be all fandom spaces.

I don't think huge gatekeeping is an advantage. I want people to come in, lurk, and eventually start socializing or contributing to some degree. If they have to get over some minor hurdles, that's actually a positive thing. Zero access barrier is why Youtube or news site comments are pure shit. If someone's never going to interact at all, I frankly don't care what they do because they're not a community member, but most fans are going to interact some with someone.

But more than minor hurdles is not desirable overall. At least not from the perspective of All Of Fandom. I like it that people can find their people now without happening to get super lucky by finding that one zine with the pen pal ads or whatever.

I don't like that there aren't even directories of the discords that do want new randos. But that's fixable. Fandom could perfectly well make a webpage or tumblr that's just invite links labeled by fandom and topic. I'm in discords that have a channel that's just invites to other discords.

There are actually directories of discords! https://disboard.org/ is the one I used to find some of my current discords, but there’s others out there, like https://top.gg/servers (that site also lists bots you can add to your server). Those sites aren’t strictly for fandom servers, but you can easily find fandom friendly or fandom focused servers there.

You can also just post invite links directly anywhere links are allowed. For example, here’s a link to a server for Cells at Work! fans: https://discord.gg/X2DnkWK It’s absolutely one of the “way too big to actually socialize and have fun” servers, but one of the channels (#cells-manga-general if you’re so inclined) has a list of fan translations and extra material pinned, so if I’m ever looking to read any of the stuff that lacks an official translation I can just go there. The link to the server is posted on the front of the wiki, so any fan can just up and join. For smaller rando-friendly servers, I see people post links on Tumblr all the time, though those tend to have stricter rules that tend to be influenced by the discourse du jour.

With rando-friendly servers, some are truly public and some involve some level of verification before you’re allowed to to see all the channels and send messages. This may be as simple as confirming you’ve read the rules or can involve the admins scouring your social media to make sure you’re not there to cause trouble. For 18+ servers they may want to see your ID to make sure you’re really an adult before letting you in the NSFW areas. Every server is different, and if you feel they’re asking for too much private info you can always just leave. There’s plenty more servers out there.

LOL, shades of Aestheticism.com’s requirement that you send a scan of your ID.

Leyendecker study but make it Spock

I spent so long on this oh my god
This is one of my favourite Leyendecker paintings and I only recently saw it because I got a book of his art and just fell in love with the piece immediately
The original painting is of Apollo but the second I saw it I knew I wanted it make it Spock from plato’s step children
I’ve wanted to do a study of his work for a while so of course I chose something this ambitious 😫 Jesus not only is there a lot of details, I also like never do digital and especially not digital painting
All in all I think I’m quite happy with this, I’ve been working on it since Friday and it took 19 hours and 23 minutes 😳
I’m I reblogging my own post? Yes because I spent 20 hours on this and wanna spread it so more XD

watching ghosts and subsequently:

1. rewatching horrible histories;

2. remembering that ben was my favourite; and

3. becoming obsessed with the thick of it

is a deep dive into nostalgia that was very necessary tbh

i have a massive soft spot for the captain, and for adam kenyon (we love the range)
