Joachim Kroll, also known as the ‘’Ruhr Hunter’’, was a German serial killer who mostly preyed on young girls and teenagers. What sets Joachim apart from other serial killers is that his killing spree was not committed in a frenzy–rather it went on at a steady pace over a span of twenty years. The death of his mother in 1955 is said to have triggered the killings. Three weeks after she passed away marks the beginning of Joachim’s macabre series of murders. After raping and strangling his female victims, he would cut slices from their buttocks and their thighs to eat. This became his signature mark. His last and final victim was a 4-year-old girl in 1976. Shortly after, a local resident in the flat he was living in at the time complained to Joachim that his toilet was blocked. Joachim told him the reason it was blocked was because it was ‘’full of guts’’. A plumber was called and found that Joachim was not kidding. The child’s lungs and organs were blocking the pipe, bags of human flesh were stored in the fridge, and a child’s hand was boiling on the stove. Joachim was arrested, where he confessed to killing 14 people, although even he wasn’t sure how high his victim count could be. Joachim died in prison in July 1991.
