May 14th, 1868: German physician and sexologist Magnus Hirschfeld, of the Hirschfeld Institute for Sexology, is born.
May 13th, 1862: Captain Robert Smalls becomes the first Black man to command a US ship when he escapes slavery, steals the ship, and escapes the Confederacy.
May 12th, 1846: The Donner Party pioneers depart for California. The journey would take far longer than intended and lead to the death of 39 (including some cannibalism).
May 11th, 1857: Indian rebels seize Delhi from the British.
May 10th, 1940: The United Kingdom occupies Iceland and appoints Winston Churchill as its Prime Minister. Nazi Germany invades France, The Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg.
May 9th, 1951: Mvskokvlke poet Joy Harjo, a key figure in the literary Native American Renaissance, is born.
May 8th, 1886: Pharmacist John Pemberton sells the first bottle of Coca-Cola, for five cents a glass as a cure for (among other things), morphine addiction, indigestion, nerve disorders, headaches, and impotence. It was a nonalcoholic version of his previous drink, Pemberton's French Wine Coca.
The original Coca-Cola recipe did involve cocaine from coca leaves and caffeine from kola nuts, these two ingredients being the source of its name. Neither is present in the current recipe.

May 7th, 1840: Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born.
May 6th, 1933: The Deutsche Studentenschaft (German Student Union) attacked the Hirschfeld Institut fur Sexualwissenschaft, appropriating about 20,000 books and articles, as well as 5,000 images, to be destroyed. It is suspected, but not confirmed, that a transwoman named Dora Richter was killed either in the attack of in custody.
May 5th, 1260: Kublai Khan become leader of the Mongol Empire.
May 4th, 1959: The first ever Grammy Awards show is held.
Just want to say thanks since that plug post sent me on a rabbit hole about out-of-place artefacts which told of the man on mars which cited the old man of the mountains which is on the New Hampshire quarter and now I know about the cool life of John Muir
By the way, in May 2 of this year, it would have been 20 years since the collapse of The Old Man Of The Mountains, so it would be pretty cool if that was a history fact, if that’s ok

May 3rd, 2001: The United States of America loses its seats on the United Nations Human Rights Commission for the first time since it was formed in 1947.
There are many reasons, and it is a complex story, but it largely has to do with internal politics, finding America's use of foreign military intervention heavy-handed, and the fact that the US had over one billion dollars of unpaid dues to the UN.
