Hello! I'm Dahni Witch of Light! I write a lot about Homestuck's SBURB, God Tier and Land Quest (aka “Classpect”) system, and I have tags for different things such as: Aspect, Class, Derse or Prospit, Class Active/Passive Spectrum, Inversion/Overembracing, Denizens, Land Quests and finally just SBURB, under which falls all of the above plus the other less important parts of SBURB like Cruxite Artifacts, Fraymotifs, Consorts, Strife Specibus, Soul Animals (Like Jade’s Hummingbirds) and other extra specific bits that aren’t major enough to warrant their own tags. I also tag/link all specific God Tiers in the format of "Class of Aspect" so for example Witch of Light, as well as tagging specific aspects/classes as "Light Aspect" and "Witch Class" And I do this not just for the Witch of Light but for all Aspects and Classes and God Tiers, so if you wanna find all the things I’ve ever talked about in regards to a specific class, aspect or god tier, just search under their tag in my blog. Finally, the final tag that I have is just a collection of every Guide I’ve ever written about various parts of SBURB, like, how to choose a Land/Denizen/God Tier/Consort etc etc anything at all that tries to help you find out what SBURB thing you would have is all under the tag called Guides for easy access. And then finally some extra personal tidbits about me, is that other than Homestuck, I very much enjoy (and oftentimes analyze/theorize/post about) other things that I really like such as Kingdom Hearts, RWBY, Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Undertale, Steven Universe, Tarot Cards, Name Meanings and Astrology

I’ve been saying this for fucking ever. Plot is the least fucking important element of any narrative, HOW you get there is SO MUCH MORE of what makes a story special

im always so confused how this isn’t the default and i always have to be reminded that the opposite is the norm

The Time Aspect and it's God Tiers/Classpect Roles

Keywords: Mechanical, Repetition, Masculinity, Destruction, Endings, Choice, Precision, Impatience

Symbols: Moments, Velocity, Clocks, Music/Dance

Time is one of the 12 Aspects of Homestuck. Its Opposite is the Aspect Space.

E-Zodiac Canon: “Those bound to the aspect of Time are fighters, full stop. Their lives are often marked by struggle, not so much because fate has it in for them, but because they are fundamentally incapable of just accepting things as they come. They value action over passive acceptance, even if that may not be the wisest or safest choice. Don’t try to tell a Time-bound to sit still and look pretty. They are very goal-focused, and tend to value the destination over the journey, and you won’t find them making that journey in any traditional sort of way. To quote cheesy posters found on many a guidance counselor’s wall-“impossible is just a word”. If you need a miracle, they are who you call. At their best, the Time-bound are empathetic and relentless problem-solvers. At their worst they are ruthless, defensive, and impulsive.“

Dahni Expansion: This makes it so Time is full of latent energy just waiting to go and be expressed in a variety of pursuits. Time dances to it’s own unique detailed rhythm, but because of its focus on the end result and not the journey, they may not notice themselves repeating certain patterns, doing the same thing over and over again and not realizing why they end up at the same place again and again, like a jumpy leg constantly bouncing with energy. Time always marches onward towards the end, and all things must end, so that energy can also come out as a destructive in nature force, like how a spinning top turns into a drill to pierce the heavens and make the impossible reality. Luckily as they are problem solvers and nontraditional in nature as they dance to their unique rhythms, no end result is out of their grasp if they wish to make it reality.

Symbolically, Time is a constantly rotating mechanical gear, always moving like a drumbeat or a metronome steady in it steps always marching on towards the end on a source of infinite energy. Time is also always waiting to burst forth and sing or dance to its own song. When I think of Time, I think of the cycles between past, present and future and the race to get to the end result of every situation, how everything eventually comes to it’s end, it’s destruction, or death. Time then is more of a burnout than a gentle decay.

"Time moves forward in precise, measured ways, singularly focused on an individual end goal, but the beat of music can go anywhere, anytime, anyway or be anything you’d like. For Time, the journey is precise and single mindedly focused on one thing, steadily unwaveringly ticking along like clockwork or a song beat, but that one thing could be anything. Your personal Ultimate Choices are what rings true in the end, because Time is looking steadfast at their personal end goal, where the finer details of individual circumstances come in to play.”

Since when does tumblr have achievements lmao

Hi Dahni! I have a random KH question for you! What do you think the series would've been like if in CoM the organization had found Ventus? Like, what if they made him into a new member? Also, I just thought it'd be kinda sad or neat if Ven being in Sora had somehow led him to his resting place. He'd have to forget about him anyway when Namine put his mind back together, but I just thought it'd be interesting. Just curious about your thoughts on this :)

so fun fact, back when BBS first came out, i had the theory that this was the direction they were taking Roxas all along, hence the interviews that at one point "Roxas" wasnt gonna be revived in initial story writeups

All "Roxas" was gonna be, was Ventus's heart let loose while Sora was asleep, because the way their hearts were stitched together n broken, only one could be concious at a time, and so the theory went that the org13 found Ventus's body in castle oblivion, put Sora asleep to bring out Roxas's shattered heart, put 2 n 2 together to have control over the powerful being that was key to making the x-blade, the thing we always knew MX was after the whole time (at the time when bbs was only just out)

but the glitch came in from Ventus's heart being broken, he was barely functional n lost all his keyblade powers, since MX's called his methods in training Ventus in bbs the first time around "Hasty" he did it more slowly this time, training up "Roxas" using the org methods instead.

Axel then has a more believable tie to wanting to be his friend the whole time instead of suddenly becoming nice (Remember when he was a mean bitch in COM?) because this already IS his friend, just one hed never thought hed see or remember ever again, memories from his kinder youth in bbs would constantly be brought up in the presence from the prescence of Ventus now Roxas, and in nurturing him teaching him, he nutures his own heart too, making a slightly more solid reason for why Axel decides to turn a new leaf n go back to the way he was before he lost his heart, because Ventus/Roxas reminds him of who he used to be

Roxas having a slightly angrier darker personality than Ventus is then explained by the pieces of Ventus and Vanitas shared heart being mixed and blended together as a new Heart, "Roxas"''s heart, so hes not just Ventus, hes Ventus made truly whole again

I always did think that the small bits we see of Ventus's original personality before MX tore him apart (and before KHUX was ever a thing again) always solidly seemed more exactly like Roxas himself

plus, with the addition of Axel all grown, Ventus completes his elemental older friend trio, Earth, Water, Fire (Ventus himself being Wind)

Special Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Edition of the Nintendo Switch OLED model to be launched worldwide on November 4th https://forums.bulbagarden.net/index.php?threads%2Fspecial-pokemon-scarlet-violet-edition-of-the-nintendo-switch-oled-model-to-be-launched-worldwide-on-november-4th.294386%2F&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr

Anonymous asked:

What are your thoughts on the brand new Crystal pokemon?

sorry for answering the ask very late lolol

I've been distracted mostly because I've been deep into following the leaks scene for this game, and compiling google docs of all the info we know so far from leakers XD

This game is gonna be awesome, I'm super excited

but lol yeah the crystal effect is cool, and love the mechanic of it, the crowns are so goofy but i love them anyway and I want to see what the other types look like lolol

I’m not a classicist, but I suspect one of the reasons so many of the Greek gods are portrayed so unflatteringly was less because they were seen as villains than because they represented their domains.  Of course Zeus sometimes misuses his power, that’s what a king does.  Of course Artemis’s wrath is wild and painful, that’s what nature can be.  Of course Hades snatched away a young girl from her mother’s arms, that’s what death does.  This is one of the reasons callout posts for some gods comparing them negatively to ‘nicer’ gods are kind of missing the point.

as someone who is partially a classicist, this is a better analysis of Greek mythology as a whole than 99.95% of the takes I’ve seen on here (and a substantial number of the takes I’ve seen in ~academia~)

there is a reason for this too

think especially of the hades example, hades doesnt snatch people all of a sudden, death does

the gods were created by humans as a way to process negative events in general, what can you do about death? nothing, you’re powerless, its a force of nature

but a god you can pray to, with a god there is a thin sliver, some miracle, some way of pleasing them through devotion and service that maybe, just maybe, you, through your own blood sweat and tears, can undo whatever terrible thing has happened, and sometimes people just need that, as something to cling to

but if thats the case, if the gods can choose whenever they please, in rare cases, whats the explanation for their being death at all? why is there no simple transactional method to reviving loved ones?

and from there, gods are given human personalities, they dont because they dont want to, for reasons of their own, you must instead bargain with them and convince them and pray and sacrifice as you would any other person

so the gods arent terrible people for no reason at all, the gods are terrible in stories because terrible things happen in this world

but the difference is if those terrible things have a person behind them, a person can be reasoned with, a crater in the ground cannot

btw you should absolutely read stuff you don't agree with. you should think critically about it. you should reflect and find different stimuli and maybe even form your own thought based on or opposed to it. ideas aren't contagious and reading words someone else has told you are "bad" won't infect you like a virus and make you "evil". read with your own brain.

there is such a huge difference between “you are not immune to propaganda” talk and acting like words are magical and enough of the wrong ones will automatically override the brain of anyone who reads them and that’s all there is to it and it drives me up the wall bc that difference is the whole key to not falling for propaganda

“i read a lot of right wing nonsense back to back and after a while i could see how it could convince people” yes! exactly! you could recognise the way it was trying to work and presumably it didn’t and that’s why you’re here on tumblrdotcom talking about it and not out there screaming at pride marches or drinking bleach for your case of shingles. your brain kicked in and noticed the mechanisms and instead of stopping to analyse what those were, how you stopped them and how to teach others to do the same you’re acting as if it was some lovecraftian magical mere exposure nonsense and there’s nothing to be done about it. “you are not immune to propaganda” does not mean “there is no way to recognise propaganda, or realise when you are being sold something, or catch it before it goes too far, your only hope is to just never ever look at any of it.” you’re not immune to sunburn either, but you can notice when it’s bright out and wear a hat and some sunscreen.

Scrabble Question

is “CD” an acceptable Scrabble/Upwords word?

my arguments:

a) it is a 2 letter word so has very little value

b) there are no accepted 2 letter words for the letter c, a very common letter, other than CD

c) even if CD may have started out as PART of an abbreviation for its full name “CD-ROM” “CD” on its own, it has now become a Noun in and of itself,  that refers to the same item, “CD” is not actually the acronym on its own, the actual acronym is “CD-ROM”

You don’t know how he does stuff like this. What does this even mean? It’s nonsense. Is it even syntactically viable?? Are you allowed to color text like that??? ARGH. Maybe you should ask him about it some time.

…hm.

You see, at first glance, this code does look syntactically viable, but only if we don’t pair the brackets in the way the coloring implies. If we write the code like this:

Then it’s a loop bound to the lifespan of Universe 1. Inside that main loop, it’s running a loop bound to the inverse of Universe 2′s lifespan - my guess being that this loop only runs while Universe 2 is dead.

If Universe 2 is ever registered as ‘alive’, the program waits for the blue THIS to die, and then continues. And when the main Universe 1 loop ends, it will wait for the red THIS to die, and finally exits.

In other words: This program will exit when U1 is dead, U2 is alive, and both ‘bifurcated’ iterations of THIS are dead.

However, the red/blue coloring implies that the brackets are paired in a completely nonsensical way.

I’m with Karkat here, This is nonsense. You can’t put the top half of one code block inside another - at least, not in any language I’ve worked with. I’m sure there are weird, esoteric languages that do it, but it’s definitely not the syntax du jour.

This ‘merged bracket’ interpretation is probably the correct one, though, since the colors match up. The reason this compiles at all is probably due to the special behavior of bifurcate THIS[], which we’re not privy to.

I do have a theory about what bifurcate is doing here, but… oh my god , guys, this is so silly. Will I post it? I’m going to post it.

What if we’re meant to do the same?

If we view these two loops as not inside each other, but adjacent to each other in 3D space, then this code makes a lot more sense. Suddenly we’re just looking at two simple death loops - one which which exits when U1 dies, and one which exits when U2 lives.

They’re not blocking each other, because they’re probably executing on different threads, which may be the true function of bifurcate. Viewed like this, this code becomes a simple, multithreaded script that works similarly to my original interpretation - the difference being that now, the colors match up properly. It’s kind of beautiful, to be honest.

Now that I’m viewing this program as two threads, it seems as if the blue loop waits for the red thread to die before it can exit, and vice versa.

If I’m right about this, it means that this program is deadlocked - neither thread can exit, because it’s waiting for the other one. The two threads are back to blocking each other, and this program will never exit.

This code, when executed, immediately causes the user’s computer to explode, and places a curse on the user forever, along with everyone he knows, and everyone he’ll ever meet.
Not surprisingly, later on you would run this code in a fit of stupidity.

None of this, however, explains why it curses the user.

I think I need to borrow Karkat’s ~ATH manual.

you…might have been the first person to publicly crack this, actually

Hello! I'm thinking of making a video about proship and anti talking points from an unbiased point of view as possible (I think there's some arguments on both sides that have merit) so to allow people to come to their own conclusions, and I was wondering if you know of any posts or sites or whatever that have proship (and/or anti!) arguments that you would consider sound to source? Or just have any general ideas/recommendations? I'm not super invested in either community so I'm still figuring out where to start researching. (I'm on anon because this is... really just an infant idea percolating in my brain at this point)

--

@fiction-is-not-reality2 is the place to start.

This is a fool's errand though. The fact that you've presented it this way means you haven't actually dug deep enough to be competent to make this video.

"Community"? They aren't communities. They're philosophical standpoints.

Some people who hold these views group together into communities, and I hear proship twitter is full of hypocrites who betray their own stated values all the time, but for the most part, these are two deeply unequal camps of thought.

Antis operate on appeals to emotion and junk science of the type behind anti-video game panics of the 1980s. They prioritize "protecting" fictional characters over protecting real people. They treat thought crimes as serious business. They condone bullying. They push the same kind of conservative agenda as anti-porn Christian groups and as TERFs.

Proship arguments are that fiction does not affect reality in a 1:1 direct and clear fashion. Thought crimes are not real. Bullying is not acceptable. Other people's fiction tastes are none of your business.

These are not equivalent sides.

Any superficially sensible argument antis make is either disingenuous or involves strawmanning the opposition and stating something everyone agrees with.

The closest to a "both sides" that's reasonable for this is, there are people who wonder, "Isn't it bad to fill your head with horrible stories? With violence, with rape, with torture... it can't be healthy to be obsessed with such distressing and maybe disgusting content."

And. Sure. It is not good to wallow in stories about Horrible Stuff.

However.

  1. You can't tell from someone's online habits if they are "wallowing" in some kind of content. Not even if they leave kudos on tons of it and nothing else. You just don't know how much time or mental consideration they're giving to the stories. You don't know how those stories are affecting them.
  2. While there are people who have problems with obsessing over dark content, there are also a lot of people who use dark content for other reasons: To process their own traumas is the one that gets mentioned the most. It's also used to sort out complex emotions, to understand the motivations of unpleasant people they've known (especially if those people got better, and they want to figure out how they could ever have done bad things), or just to explore the possibility of human actions in a setting where no real people get hurt. There is value to this content.
  3. It is not your job (not my job, not AO3's job) to force people to Not Do Bad Things. If someone is damaging themself by wallowing in horrific content... that's their choice. If they're a child, it's their parents' job to manage the media they're exposed to. (When I had young kids, I sure as hell did not want randos on the internet deciding what was acceptable for them to see.) You are not the thought police.

There is no variant of "this content should be banned" that doesn't play right into the alt-right evangelical Christian neo-nazi TERF agenda.

And there is no variant of "the people who make or read this content should be ostracized, bullied, and threatened with real-world violence" that isn't just hate speech and punching down at marginalized people.

The closest thing to a valid "anti" stance is "I don't want to see any of that horrible stuff; I don't want it to be welcome on the archives I read at; I don't want people who like it in my communities because they creep me out."

In which case... be selective in what Discords you join, and don't hang out at AO3. Maybe get together with other people who share your tastes and set up an efiction archive (or mailing list, or Discord with google doc links) for the fiction you all enjoy.
