The fact that quizilla is not an option here makes me feel ELDERLY

I remember when there was a character limit on quiz-fics questions and we accepted the answers to them didn’t MATTER

Uh-huh...it's quizilla that makes you feel elderly.

*looks at older fandom like she's on The Office*

I got access to the internet in high school and we got a crash course - how to make a hotmail, how to use Yahoo to find stuff. So, I looked up some things I liked, followed links and webrings and stumbled upon Vampire Chronicles fanfic. In retrospect terrible Mary Sue fanfic, but hey.

Actually, I might have technically seen it before VC - there was some The Crow website that I was convinced was listing books, but in retrospect. Yeah.

I'm not saying my early approach to refinding fanfic involved retracing my steps through the webring link by link. Learning curves, you know?

Webring to Master/Apprentice pipeline! 2002. But I knew about fanfic before that - I just hadn't considered it might do anything for me!

some conspicuously not-in-pieces but very sexy hippolyti - joseph-désiré court, jean-baptiste lemoyne, peter paul rubens, and lawrence alma-tadema, and seneca’s phaedra 1085-1087 trans. myself.

i think anyone who’s every used the internet has seen this picture at least once

yes that one exactly

wake me up inside

That first image is an edit of HUGZzz by Irene Strychalski. She’s improved tremendously in the past nine years, and you can see her current work on her tumblr, reniedraws! She has done backgrounds for Archer and Unsupervised, backgrounds and character designs for Chozen, and pencils and inks for issue #1 of Deadpool Family. She’s currently making a webcomic called Shaman Child. Here’s some of her current art:

As for the anime girl in the plaid skirt, I braved the hellscape that is early ‘00s anime websites, exploring endless gif-covered Gaia pages and vampire-filled roleplay forums, traveling across seas of unsourced DeviantArt edits and low-res hentai, to discover that she is an original character by Hiro Suzuhira. She has done work for Shuffle!, Ef: A Tale of Melodies, Akikan!, Phantom Breaker, and We Without Wings, among many others, and she is also a prolific freelance illustrator. Here are some examples of her art:

Fuck yeah! Show those sources! Knowing after all this time of that stolen art being everywhere, seeing the artist named is really great!

As I get older I find reading classics (especially the stoics) very humbling because old farts have been bitching and moaning the exact same rant about kids these days for as long as there have been kids or days to bitch about. Whenever I get mad about tiktok audios or whatever that little voice in my head is like "Do you wanna end up like Cato? You sound real Cato right now"

downside: going to have to include a picture of the Giza pyramids in the slides for the lecture upside: i get to give people a crash course in why perspective matters in two frames, because

followed by

is such a funny sequence

i find most people who haven't seen it in person don't know that cairo is RIGHT THERE

Avatar

I loved these perspectives so I took some of my own when I was in Cairo and yeah, they're literally just. Right there. Pass em on your way to work, nbd

No, y'all don't even understand.

There is literally a Pizza Hut across the street from the pyramids.

Avatar

That Pizza Hut among other things is why Egyptologists laugh their asses off when we see another piece of media where the protagonists get "lost in the desert near the pyramids", because it's like... just turn around my dudes you're only a seven min walk away from the nearest fastfood shop

Yall don't know how much I adore all of this

If you are wandering the desert, lost and exhausted, spotting pyramids is a sure sign of your SURVIVAL because in less than half an hour you can just walk to the nearest business and ask for a glass of water and you will be good

Fun Fact for new readers: The vampire women are never referred to by the book as “brides”—the whole “Brides of Dracula” name for them doesn’t show up until a good 3+ decades later.

That being considered, I invite you to conceptualize them as Dracula’s Roommates with me, who refuse to do any chores and keep trying to eat his food out of the fridge.

I mean, aristocrats at the time would always have a host of people staying on in their houses as guests. These guests were fully not expected to work or bring in any money, and were under no pressure to ever leave. These women in the book might actually be closer to the “Sister of Dracula,” or “Distant Cousin of Dracula” or even probably “Maiden Aunt of a Friend of a Relation of Dracula who’s known for being fun at parties.” The “Bride of Dracula” would have had actual hosting duties.
