I haven’t been around often. Life has grabbed onto me and held on tight. But I still quietly keep up with news and goings-ons. I’m beyond saddened to hear of the news of Granny, Tilikum, Doublestuf, and many others who lost their lives in just the past month.. It’s made me feel so hopeless for the species. In Tilly’s case, it was expected, and I almost feel relief for him knowing he’ll finally be in peace from such a hectic and unfulfilling life. Still, you can’t shake a feeling of just utter failure either.

The fact that procaps are so desperate for baby orcas that they’re openly hoping LP will be able to continue it’s horrendous breeding programme which consisted entirely of inbred, rejected calves that had to be hand raised, really shows off just how little they actually care about these animals.
Hopefully SW steps in to make sure LP doesn’t slip any more “oops” pregnancies in for Kohana, Skyla or Morgan.
still can’t believe it’s taken procaps this long to realize that seaworld will act a business first and a zoological facility second. of course they’re going to do whatever they can to help their business and shareholders.
it’s just that now for the first time ever they’re not doing it to cater to procaps’ desires and for some reason that is utterly shocking to them.
Ha ha, yeah. This is little more than a business move. SW is a for-profit facility, they wouldn’t last long if they didn’t make business moves.
“We’re continuing to work with the veterinary and animal care teams to treat Tilikum’s illness. His energy level and appetite have both improved since he started this course of treatment, and that is positive. In the last several days, Tilikum has increased engagement with his trainers and also with the other whales in the facility that are often showing interest in him. We understand that he is very ill and will have good days and bad, but our team is cautiously optimistic about his response to treatment thus far.“
oh, how the procap narrative has changed! a few days ago it sounded something like this:
“the tanks are good enough, seaworld knows what they’re doing! they know best! of course they have to make money, they have to take care of the animals don’t you know”
and today, i’ve seen this:
“animals will die alone in barren tanks and it’s all because seaworld cares more about business and money!”
OH, THE SWEET IRONY
I’m also curious to see how Loro Parque will respond. Their animals are technically owned by Seaworld, but since they don’t live at a Seaworld park, I assume they’ll still be breeding them?
SeaWorld made no mention of LP in any of their releases so I’m guessing LP will still be breeding themselves but without SeaWorld’s input?
They haven’t got a lot of options breeding-wise either way. Unless SW actively trades animals in and out for breeding or uses AI, LP is pretty much stuck with Tilikum genes everywhere + Morgan.
saw people actually Naomi Rose (so I’d think she knows what she’s talking about) on facebook claim that it goes for the LP whales as well as it’s a “corporation-wide” decision!
Absolutely fantastic!
Saw this on their facebook. It seems a little weirdly worded to me but when does seaworld ever make things clear! I’m just hoping for the best
Keeping my fingers crossed, I sincerely hope that this means Morgan will no longer suffer harassment in order to be impregnated, and that she isn’t already.
What about Marineland France and Kamogawa?. If SeaWorld refuse to ship sperm out to them for AI it could force them to end their breeding progams too!.
It leaves Kshamenk as the only non-SeaWorld, proven male breeder in the world right now.
If you add non-SeaWorld, unbred males to the list it only leaves Inouk, Moana, Earth, Keijo and Nord, (and there’s no guarantee that all are fertile and will live to breeding age. And it would be unwise to use Keijo since he is inbred).
The already tiny captive orca genepool just got WAY smaller.
If Russia and China never work out how to breed them successfully, it could be the end for orca breeding wotldwide.

Op status folks:
to kick a user, type /kick username
Usually the owner will be around but sometimes conflicting time zones may be an issue. If something is going on, until the owner can arrive, try to use ignore codes if possible.
If you see an op give you or another member +v status, this means ‘voice’. If there is a disturbance in the chat, the op or owner can mute the chat so no one who does not have +v can speak, which stops issues immediately regardless of how many times the troublemaker(s) join or quit.
Rules:
1. Be civil to one another. Should a Pro-Cap come in who wants to discuss with us, try to discuss without name calling. (Should the Pro-Cap be antagonistic, however, either ignore them or attempt to discuss with them. If it becomes annoying, the channel operator will kick/ban the user.
2. You may chat about whatever you want to. You do not have to stick to the topic of cetaceans in captivity. The chat is here for people to hang out too.
3. Please try not to start arguments or be disruptive.
4. Please do not harass users for their choice of diet, be they omnivore, vegetarian, or vegan. Example- Please try not to be offended if someone has made a meatloaf and they are excited about it. Likewise, please do not snub people who are discussing vegan things (*However; if the topic moves to obligate carnivore pets being fed vegan foods*As a staple diet*, please try to kindly explain and discuss why this is very unhealthy for the pet. We don’t want to step on anyone’s toes here but we feel that users can engage in discussion without it turning into an argument!

Loro Parque’s response to SeaWorld. I’m not sure what they mean with this, but it confirms that they too are not allowed to breed any more!
This wording actually makes me concerned they want to defy/override Seaworld’s mandate.
But if the whales belong to SeaWorld themselves, could they do that? This statement is so poorly worded and it’s difficult to comprehend completely what they plan on doing
Yea the wording makes me incredibly nervous. It's so so very... idk. Vague? Like it's trying hard not to give a concrete statement so that they can skirt around it later.
just saw a procap liken seaworld’s decision to stop breeding to “negotiating with terrorists”
lmao okay
Wawww
Is anyone else kind of excited for the awesome ocean article on this? I mean, I think it’ll be entertaining.
Hee hee…I hadn’t thought of that!!! Omfg I wanna see!!
Just read it and it's.. not that bad at all
Are they planning on expanding the tanks?
They've since completely dropped the blue world project, so as of right now? No.
Apparently Seaworlds stocks raised by 9% at the end of this day after this announcement!
I didn’t realize the extent of this especially in the context of the arguments I was having with someone earlier.
Person was literally arguing that “Seaworld having the whales literally brings them their revenue which they then allocate to conservation”
Except Seaworld having the whales was precisely why their stocks have been dropping because the practice has become - justifiably - controversial.
They make the decision to ban breeding and their stocks go up 9% at the end of the day. How are people even making this argument still when it’s becoming abundantly clear that their revenue and target demographic is speaking and they’re saying that this decision is good, and that they’ll be supported due to this decision, and that money will come to them again when they stop these practices for good?
I swear.
You can tell that the majority of procaps really are a selfish as we thought when their response to the end of captive breeding is “Being a Shamu trainer was my dream! Why SeaWorld???” And “Now future generations don’t get to see them up close at SeaWorld!”
And then there are those that act like it’s such a travesty that eventually there will be an orca alone like they haven’t ignored Kiska and Kshamenk and Lolita for years.
And then you have the ones that are arguing for how important breeding and raising calves is to their lives. It’s “unnatural” to not let them. Because an unnatural environment, unnatural health issues, unnatural breeding, unnatural behaviors and more is o.k.
It’s about you - it always has been and it always will be.
Apparently Seaworlds stocks raised by 9% at the end of this day after this announcement!
I haven’t had a chance to read many/all the articles I’d like to yet, and will be able to say something more coherent after I’ve done so - but I’m admittedly still really wary and somewhat skeptical of this whole bit. I don’t DISBELIEVE the news, but it certainly feels like a “look both ways crossing the street and get hit by a plane” sort of thing. Hmm. (I thought I was dreaming this morning, honestly)
Same here.
So will this ban eventually roll over to apply to Dolphins/other cetaceans as well? I love that so much attention is going to orcas but we mustn’t forget the plight of other cetaceans and where they stand..
I find that unlikely for the near future. I won’t be surprised if it’s eventually done with belugas. Like orcas, the captive population has little genetic diversity and attempts to get more have failed. But to my knowledge, there’s no shortage of bottlenose dolphins or low genetic diversity so those will stick around for a while.
Yea. It's a depressing reality. It's kind of the elephant in the room too when it comes to this debate and Blackfish too. That a lot of attention is being bought to orcas but the other cetas are unfortunately falling in the shadows as a result. I'd love to see folks attentions slowly but surely divert to the others.
You know, all those cries of Seaworld need’s support because of the rescue work the do and their advocacy for lesser know animals and their care of smaller cetacean is starting to appear to be just a load of bollocks.
I have never seen a group scupper their own major arguments faster.
Seaworld to the end you aint.
Tfw I asked someone for sources of this claim and instead they did nothing but gloat about how they worked at a zoo and sent their lunatic friends to harass me in their defense
Tfw still no source 😢
