In a previous response you wrote that Stan Lee is "...certainly the most well-known comic book creator, the person that somebody from outside of our industry is most likely to recognize." I'm a huge Stan Lee fan (meeting him oh so briefly at Boston Comic Con back in August was a major bucket list moment) but who would you consider to be the second most well-known comic book creator? Who would you pick as the next most recognizable "somebody from outside our industry" alive and/or passed?
That’s a very good question. These days, Joe Quesada maybe.
Dude! Sergio Aragonés!
Sorry guys, it would have to be Frank Miller.
Depends where. In USA Miller ties with Alan Moore.
And I would raise with Grant Morrison and Warren Ellis. Bendis has personality but not cult of personality yet. and Matt Fraction & Kelly Sue DeConnick are climbing but have not reached Joe / Julie Public’s consciousness.
Since they know their stuff.
And in honesty, while I consider him to be(as a writer, not as a person) overrated hack, Neil Gaiman.
Gaiman with his Sandman which is a fluke whose popularity I will never get. Neil Gaiman is civilized, nice person with good values and man does he write boring stuff. That sells by gazillions for some fucking reason.
While we do not agree on Neil, I still think you are a friend.
But I do not agree.
Thank You and there is no need to agree between friends, I know it is not that popular an opinion as most people do like Neil’s work. I view him like I do Tim Burton or Stephen King: there is obviously talent and ideas but their personal vision is too overwhelming and I feel they would be improved by someone reigning them in.
Neil Gaiman is truly nice fellow to talk to too, smart as whip as a person but his fiction just leaves me utterly cold and more than bit confused about his popularity.
But I think he is closest to comic book rock star in a Beatles kind of way.
I just prefer either Motörhead of Garth Ennis or Nick Cave of Greg Rucka.
