“Opera singer” though I really do mostly oratorio and concert work (i.e. stuff that isn’t staged or with costumes, but I sing in the style that most people associate with opera).

Puerto Rican, Ashkenazi Jewish. Agnostic-atheist by Christian standards. Just plain Jewish by Jewish standards. From an interfaith home, was raised Catholic but grew closer to Judaism and my Jewish heritage in adulthood and officially converted (between me being patrilineal and the fact that I wasn’t raised in the faith, it was still necessary, both for ritual purposes and my own closure). Conversion was Conservative (sect, not politics), I consider myself Reconstructionist. I will still post about both faiths. I have joked that I had an “amicable breakup” with Catholicism and it’s pretty much where I stand.

Fandoms over the years have included: Tenchi Muyo!, Chobits, Ouran, Death Note, Hetalia, Star Trek (primarily TNG and DS9). Warner Bros. cartoons I wouldn’t really consider being part of any fandom with it but it was my first hyperfixation as a kid and it still has a special place in my heart and I will still absolutely geek out over it. But most of this blog is Hetalia, Star Trek, Jewish issues, and random shitposts. Sometimes all four. (Oh, and I love guinea pigs a whole lot.)

Speaking at this year’s St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Vladimir Putin declared that his “many lifelong Jewish friends” have told him that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “isn’t Jewish but a disgrace to the Jewish people.” This was Putin’s response to a question about why the West fails to understand Moscow’s constant allegations that Ukraine is run by fascists, given that Zelensky is himself Jewish.
After Putin’s remarks, the audience was then presented with a short montage of documentary footage depicting violence committed on Ukrainian and Polish soil during the Second World War. The Russian president told spectators that he anticipated questions about Nazism in Ukraine and requested the video in advance.
In May 2022, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov provoked a scandal (and later a reported apology from Putin to then Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett) when he claimed that Adolf Hitler “had Jewish blood,” days after Israel marked Holocaust Remembrance Day. “[That Zelensky is Jewish] means absolutely nothing. Wise Jewish people say that the most ardent anti-Semites are usually Jews,” Lavrov told an Italian TV show.
The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum is an annual “business event” intended to attract foreign direct investment and project a pro-market image for Russia. Since 2006, it’s been held under the auspices of the Russian president, and Putin was its headline speaker again today.
After a speech that lasted more than an hour, Putin let loose during the question-and-answer segment, particularly when asked why the West fails to understand Moscow’s constant allegations that Ukraine is run by “fascists,” given that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is himself Jewish. “I’ve had many Jewish friends since childhood,” the president responded. “And they tell me that Zelensky isn’t Jewish but a disgrace to the Jewish people.”

Vancouver property owners 'panic' to rent as vacancy tax implemented
Vancouver's empty homes tax came into effect over the weekend and some property owners are now scrambling to rent, sell or find a way around the fees.

Under the new rules, homes that are not occupied for at least six months of the year are subject to a tax of one per cent of the property’s assessed value. The deadline to rent out empty dwellings was July 1.
Fazli said many of the people he has talked to are thinking of renting or selling their properties. He recently met with a woman who owns three empty properties in Vancouver — and says one of them is now listed for rent, another will be listed shortly and she is thinking of selling the third.

they’re meant to be investment properties, bought, left empty, and then sold a year or few later for huge profit as housing values continue to rise. it’s a massive part of the bc housing bubble, and why despite so much new construction it’s still so difficult to find rental housing

the fact that these landlords are panicking because they might have to actually use their housing properties as housing rather than finance capital is deeply funny
