Wholesome??? What is so wholesome about centuries of genocide, violent colonization, and oppression against people of color, non-christians, queer people, women, indigenous people, and disabled people???
Do you forget that most of the "founding fathers" enslaved fellow human beings?
Do you forget that in the 1970s around a quarter of indigenous women were forcibly sterilized so that they would not have indigenous children?
Do you forget that slavery is still perfectly legal in the United States because of a purposeful loophole in the 13th amendment?
People are angry, rightfully so, at decades and decades of oppression by the US government, and they are displaying their anger by burning flags. Honestly flag burning is relatively innocuous compared to other forms of resistance. It's probably a little safer than lighting fireworks since flags don't explode into the sky.
I hope you are having a nice July 4th, I truly do, but I insist to you that "independence" day is not a "relatively wholesome" holiday, not by a long shot, and you have to ignore mountains of bloody history to continue to think so.
