the way I'm psychoanalyzing this book from everything Simon says
this man has some serious PTSD from all the battles he's been in and the amount of times he's risked his life and almost died
after the happy ending, if you can even call it that, he lost basically everything
except Baz
that was the one thing he had left to lose
and he was waiting desperately til Baz got sick of him and he lost him too
he never tried to maintain their relationship or fight for Baz because he was already sure he was gonna lose him
that fighting wouldn't be worth it
he fought for everything else he thought he had to fight for
he even fought for Agatha and never gave up on her until she gave up on him
fought for the mage and against the humdrum and everything but never fought for Baz because he was too scared to
and the third book they re-establish their relationship by starting over and Simon actually putting in effort
effort to love Baz the way he wants to
to communicate more about what he's been through and what he's still going through
sorry for the infodump I can't even begin to describe how much I love this book series
