So i used to be kind of anti-sex work(but not anti-sex worker, just the conditions that lead ppl to that job etc). Then i had a conversation with a SW and I made the point of, how is sex work not rape by financial coercion? And her response which was “that’s capitalism, we’re all metaphorically sucking dick to pay the bills”, and honestly i thought she was right and it changed my mind. Isn’t all labor through financial coercion? I’m wondering what you think of this.
“A prostitute, unlike a McDonald's cashier or a waitress, is essentially a prisoner in a brothel for a three-week shift and cannot collect unemployment insurance if she is fired. While all three workers have to follow health regulations, only a prostitute must submit to regular physical examinations and blood tests. Legal prostitutes may have more medical checkups than most illegal prostitutes and non-prostitutes, but these mandated checkups are meant to protect the customer from infection by a prostitute, not a prostitute from a customer.” -Nicole Bingham
Normal jobs in capitalism don’t come with the risk of pregnancy or STDs. If sex work was real work, it would have basic safety standards. But it doesn’t.
There’s a post I reblogged about this a while ago, if I can find it I’ll repost it. Since I can’t phrase it as eloquently as other people on this site lol
