„I am full of hate and I love it” - Eric Harris
„ I am full of love and nobody wants it” - Dylan Klebold
Differences in Eric Harris« and Dylan Klebold’s psychological characteristics
ERIC HARRIS - paranoid, antisocial, narcissistic, and sadistic personality traits
Paranoid personality traits :
- preoccupation with autonomy and control as well as an extreme sensitivity to issues of status
(“I live in Denver, and god damn it I would love to kill almost all of its residents. Fucking people with their rich snobby attitude thinking they are all high and mighty”)
- obsession with independence and self-control
(“I always try to be different, but I always end up copying someone else.”)
Antisocial personality traits:
- someone who is “antisocial” is really “antisociety”—he or she does not operate by the rules of society, including laws, customs, common decency, and a consideration for the rights and feelings of others
(“Fuck money, fuck justice, fuck morals, fuck civilized, fuck rules, fuck laws … DIE man-made words … people think they apply to everything when they don’t/can’t. There’s no such thing as True Good or True evil”)
- disregard for morality as well as a lack of empathy
(“Morris, Nate, if you guys live I want you to have whatever you want from my room.”)
- impression management: making a positive impression to cover up being different, often by lying (“I lie a lot. Almost constant, and to everybody.”)
Narcissistic personality traits
- creation a grandiose self-image in an attempt to compensate for what is lacking
(„ich binb Gott.”; “My belief is that if I say something, it goes. I am the law.)
- presenting a narcissistic facade to the world in order to hide the emptiness or weakness they feel inside
(“I feel like God and I wish I was, having everyone being OFFICIALLY lower than me. I already know that I am higher than most anyone in the fucking welt in terms of universal Intelligence.”)
Sadistic personality traits
- showing disdain towards anyone they perceive as being inferior
(“Kill all retards, people with brain fuck ups, drug addicts, people who can’t figure out how to use a fucking lighter..”)
- having pleasure from having power over others
(„I want to tear a throat out with my own teeth like a pop can. I want to gut someone with my hand, to tear a head off and rip out the heart and lungs from the neck, to stab someone in the gut, shove it up to their heart, and yank the fucking blade out of their rib cage! I want to grab some weak little freshman and just tear them apart like a wolf, show them who is god. Strangle them, squish their head, bite their temples in the skull, rip off their jaw, rip off their collar bones, break their arms in half and twist them around, the lovely sounds of bones cracking and flesh ripping, ahhh … so much to do and so little chances.”)
DYLAN KLEBOLD – avoidant, schizotypal and dependent personality traits
Avoidant personality traits
- overwhelming anxiety, loneliness and sense of inadequacy
(“nobody accepting me even though I want to be accepted … me looking weird and acting shy—BIG problem.”)
Schizotypal personality traits
- schizotypals are severely self-conscious, anxious, and uncomfortable
- extreme social inadequacy combined with problems in thinking
- variety of odd thought processes (use of forms of words that do not exist: depressioners, un-existable, tormentations, existor, perceivations )
- having difficulty separating reality from fantasy
(“I wonder how/ when I got so fucked up with my mind, existence, problem—when Dylan Bennet Klebold got covered up by this entity containing Dylan’s body.”)
(“I am GOD.” )
Dependent personality traits
- clinging desperately to one person, feeling insecure about relationships
(„if anyone had any idea how sad I am … I mean we were the TEAM. When him & I were friends, well I finally found someone who was like me: who appreciated me & shared very common interests … now that he’s ‘moved on’ I feel so lonely, without a friend” - a passagage written about Zach at the time when he got a girlfriend)
- becoming so fused and entwined, that they may act at times in ways quite divergent from what has been characteristic of them - Dylan changed his behavior in Eric’s presence in multiple ways. Whereas Eric’s journal contains swastikas and Nazi references, none of this appears in Dylan’s writing. With Eric, however, Dylan gave Nazi salutes. Eric’s journal contains racial and ethnic slurs; Dylan’s does not. Yet when Dylan was at school with Eric, he made bigoted statements. Eric’s writing contains homophobic comments; Dylan’s does not. But when Dylan wrote in Eric’s yearbook, he wrote about how they laughed at “fags.”
- Psychological analysis from Why Kids Kill by Peter Langman
Columbine High School, West Entrance, where the attacks began.
Guns used in Columbine Massacre by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. The guns are place in a specially-designed boxes that Jeffco had made to hold the evidence.
Ignoring fame was my rebellion, in a funny way. I was insistent on being normal and doing normal things. It probably wasn’t advisable to go to college in America and room with a complete stranger. And it probably wasn’t wise to share a bathroom with eight other people in a coed dorm. Looking back, that was crazy.
