"this work is problematic because of how it handles [subject]": reasonable premise for media criticism

"this work is problematic because it depicts [subject]": do not pass go do not collect $200 this is, as a general rule, a functionally reactionary and conservative argument

unfortunately social media puts the activist meeting, the bitching session, the public outreach, the group therapy session, the silly blow off some steam gossiping about people private chat, and the group d&d session all in the same place, and so people mistake, for example, an outpouring of legitimate grief and rage as somehow a public-facing political statement, or a carefully edited and tactical political statement as a reflection of a person's most deeply held private feelings, etc

I'm really gonna need some of you in the CR fandom to take a step back from your rigid binary oppressor/oppressed view of power dynamics. like just a suggestion, but in between coming up with all these scorching hot freshman english class analogies of the gods as a powerful/privileged class and extrapolating that into 'in this case genocide is ok actually,' you might take a beat every so often and reflect on how the rhetoric of 'this powerful elite is controlling everyone's lives and must be stopped' has been used to justify antisemitism for, like... ever.

the crime the criminal

Objection!

Your honor. It's true that a first glance at the evidence would suggest my client was responsible. But let's look a little further, shall we?

Image

I have here a reverse image search for the crime scene as well as my client's photo.

And if you look closely at the results...

The blogs and dates don't match.

My client has been framed!

And why? Because their iconic "mischievous smile" makes for a funnier post, of course. But nothing, not even Tumblr notes, is more important than the truth!

I present to you: The original unaltered post and the true culprit!

Myocorrhizal fungi are so integral to plants’ existence that even if you think you don’t like mushrooms, you actually do

You. Mushroom hater. Have you ever enjoyed a fruit or perhaps a vegetable? Or bread? That fruit or perhaps vegetable (or the wheat for your bread) grew from doing yuri stuff with fungi. Thank the fungi for doing yuri stuff to your food

Have you ever had fun in your life. Have you ever tried whimsy or even merriment

i think popular media culture is poisoned in the following ways:

  • if you like something, people will make fun of you because you have admitted to experiencing a sincere emotion. this makes people defensive about what they like.
  • if you don’t like something, people will take your opinion personally and attack you. this makes people feel like they have to have a very good reason to dislike something.
  • people reach for reasons to like vs dislike things that are serious and often politically relevant so they can defend themselves from other opinion-havers.
  • these positions mutually reinforce each other until it is assumed that any declaration of liking or disliking something is both personally and politically relevant by default.
  • i am forced to look at this every time one of my fandom posts blows up.

No matter how progressive or well-read you are, there are always going to be moments in your life where somebody pushes back against something that's so culturally ingrained you never even considered it before. And you'll say "Huh, it never occurred to me to challenge this but you're right" and that doesn't mean you were "morally toxic" before, it means you're a non-omniscient human capable of growth.

It’s normal to get sad as things start to get better for you. You may experience a sense of loss, regret, or shame over your past struggles. Do what you can to bask in the peace and joy you are creating for yourself. The present is what matters right now.

I wanted this but the original poster is transphobic

This is called the "analog loophole" and there's nothing anyone can do to stop it. They can encrypt and copy-protect all they want, but eventually the file has to be sent to a speaker and/or screen, and it has to get there in a human-readable form because that's the whole dang point

The simplest way to exploit the analog loophole is just pointing a camera at a screen or a microphone at a speaker, but direct recording is also always possible and always will be. Anything that can be displayed can be saved and displayed again
