found this rove beetle inside on a loaf of bread, and assumed it was just lost, finding comfort in a damp, dark place. but when i put it outside with a slice, it really tore into it!

WEEVIL WEDNESDAY i never had the pleasure of seeing a real weevil before until today

(Central texas and bad quality bc phone camera) I'm pretty sure it's a Conotrachelus naso so while common it is special. to me.

no location so can’t give species ID, but that is a sylvan leaf katydid, possibly Phyllomimus. unlike other katydids that fold their wings vertically to form a leaf shape, these flatten their wings which achieves a very different appearance from most orthopterans since the strong jumping legs are hidden!

This article documents the severe and ongoing specimen neglect I witnessed over 12 months working at Florida State Collection of Arthropods. FSCA actively solicits donations, then picks and chooses what specimens to care about based on individuals' personal favorites. The rest are left to rot.

Please take a look and consider sharing this, it's extremely important for people (especially in science, taxonomy, natural history, museum curation, etc) to know how and why scientific material is being lost.

I was going through your slug tag and I realize I have so many questions! How many do you have? Have you released any of them? How much do they eat? What texture are they? Slimy????

several; no they are an invasive species & I control their populations tightly by freezing unwanted eggs; too much; like a human tongue that’s been dried and chilled

hello! i was wondering if you knew of any way to make your bed unattractive to house centipedes? there are some living in my apartment and i’ve been happy to have them around to kill pests but last night i woke up to one on my neck and i freaked out 😭 i don’t know if i injured them and i feel bad. is there something i can do to deter them from my bed and allow them to keep chilling in the rest of my apartment? my boyfriend wants to call an exterminator but i don’t. thank you very much for your wisdom 🖤

house centipedes can’t climb smooth surfaces, so perhaps you could put tape or some other smooth material around the legs or base of the bed (I’ve heard people do this in Arizona and elsewhere where there are scorpions). it might also be that they’re falling from the ceiling, and I’m not sure how best to fix that.

house centipedes indoors mean there’s something they’re eating, like roaches, crickets, moths, or termites. an exterminator really won’t solve the problem by killing the house centipedes, but getting rid of their food sources would likely help reduce the amount of indoor centipedes. apartments are tricky though since there’s other dwellings nearby that you don’t have control over, and those might be the actual source of the problem.

So I was visiting London and indulging my little habit of collecting native wildflower seeds in St. James's park. Not because I intended to sow them of course, can't introduce plants from other countries willy-nilly, but because I wanted to have a look at how they differed from the ones that grew in similar environments back at home. Sticking catchfly- and mallow seeds in a little jar in my pocket, that sort of thing, having a great time. Opened the jar again in Kew Gardens a few days later only to notice that every mallow seed had a hole in it, poked around a little, and found that my jar was full of tiny weevils! I had to let them out which meant discarding all my seeds but it was a fun enough encounter that I don't feel bad about it

Thereuonema tuberculata N°6 molted. he’s a big old boy, probably a food four years old or so. ugly cute face with fuzz, huge buggy eyes

I think I’ll call him Mouche. say hello to Mouche

my only other named house centipede Moseley is another huge male, a Scutigera coleoptrata.

Mouche & Moseley, Moseley and Mouche. I imagine them to be cantankerous old-timers who argue about whether spiders or moths taste better and tell tall tales about losing legs to giant vicious earwigs

Scutigera have slightly “cuter” faces than Thereuonema but I think Mouche is cute in the way some people find ugly dogs cute
