i was just thinking about how the modern commodification of identity and homogenization of media is probably related to the rise of streaming services. back in the day people would just watch whatever was on tv. it didn't say anything about them because they didn't have any control over network programming, and likewise tv programming could be weirder because it didn't have to be specifically For anyone. nowadays you can't just turn on the tv and have some weird shit on there, you have to specifically choose what to watch, so if it's weird it's your fault. so services strive to provide programming that is Not Weird regardless of whether or not it is interesting
