the autistic view of the world has insight and beauty in it, and we’re taught that there’s something wrong with it.

What’s fascinating is that the parents who didn’t know it was the work of an autistic kid praised it as well.

Technically, we don't know that it's an autistic kid's work, either. 5e infographic doesn't say Cadence is autistic.

"appropriate play skills" is such a horrid phrase, goddamn

people demonize autism so much that parents think their children aren’t playing “correctly”. it’s play, how could it ever be wrong?

Not surprised that you're a man considering how you care about your porn addiction more than the women it hurts

Is it true Dragon Ball Z uses blackface?

Yeah, the character Mr, Popo.

I have absolutely no idea how Toriyama has been able to get away with it even until today...

This is actually a rather interesting. In japan they have a huge problem with the belief that they are a completely homogenized country when they aren’t. Like 98% of people in Japan are Japanese. They see the world through stereotypical colored glass and see nothing wrong with said stereotypes because there’s not enough people who care enough to correct them actually living in the country. It’s not just blackface, they also have whiteface and brownface. The problem though lies in the fact that diversity itself isn’t recognized, cultivated or respected. Most Japanese people don’t see this as a problem because they’re taught not to. It’s treated as “no big deal” and even encouraged by media. Most Japanese people don’t even know blackface is wrong at all and even to some extent consider it flattery. This is a Japanese woman with blackface.

(You know the mentality that imitation is the most sincerest form of flattery) But here’s the thing...IT ISN’T...at all...in fact it’s demeaning to have your race be boiled down to a fashion statement. The sheer lack of self-awareness in Japan is a MAJOR problem. While in animation this problem pops up here and there the biggest issue is with Japanese reality TV, variety shows and fashion. In fact you will usually get the best representation from anime and manga simply because it has a wider demographic and audience.

However this doesn’t change the fact older anime and manga wasn’t made with this in mind and a lot of artists based there style off of 1920s animation was popular in Japan and sparked a kind of style trend. (1920s animation was filled with blackface and steriotypes by the way,) Starting with Osamu Tezuka and Astro Boy/The Mighty Atom. But here is where the problem for Mangaka like Toriyama. They had never seen a black person before let alone knew how to draw them. Back then there was no internet. Only media to base his character off of and the popular style. I’m not standing up for Toriyama in anyway. But he wanted to tell a story of a boy who travels the world...and the world isn’t only filled of Japanese people. He knew that and tried to incorporate it into his story and failed at making the representation look well...kosher.

Again I’m not trying to say he didn’t simply add to the stereotypes but I also would not be surprised if he simple assumed this was an acceptable way to draw black people because of how media presented blackface as no big deal. However when Dragonball became popular overseas Blackface in America was shunned. Yet it still took people a while to notice. >_> Really Americans aren’t all that great when it comes to recognizing systemic racism either. Anyways this has been an essay as to why you’ll find Blackface in old manga and why there was never any attempt to change this fact later in the anime adaptations of said manga.

This style of drawing black people has persisted in more modern anime like One Piece, too:

It's even seen in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood to some extent, although much more toned down:

The idea that it's because "Japanese people don't know what black people look like" is particularly weird, though, since I'm pretty sure Japan has had a long-running obsession with American and British film and television for at least the last 30 years.

It's likely (particularly in the case of shows like FMA where it's less pronounced) that this has just become the traditional style of drawing black people - in which case this is a tradition that needs to go ASAP.

Plus you'll never see it in the works of Shinichirō Wanatabe, who seems perfectly capable of researching what black people look like and drawing them properly, even way back in 1998 when Cowboy Bebop was released. Looks like being Japanese doesn't actually require you to draw black people as caricatures!

you guys know you can get USB connectable CD, dvd, and blu-ray players right. and you can buy external hard drives with crazy amounts of space for an amount of money that would make the average person from 2009’s head explode bc of how cheap it is. and if you do this and get ripping software such as handbrake for CDs and DVDs and makeMKV for blurays you can both own a physical copy of whatever media you want and make it accessible to yourself no matter where you are. do you guys know this

lots of people are reblogging this and tagging it #piracy—i should clarify, this is not piracy! ripping DVDs and CDs to have your own copy is fully legal, because it’s your legal right to do what you will with your property individually. it only becomes illegal if you then distribute that file on the internet.
