This really freaking annoys me. If you’re in charge of a movie franchise then it is your job to embrace every character, to help them grow and overcome their differences. But no, NO! These asshats kill off every single character that they hate and are acting like complete babies just because they don’t like them. If you don’t like them so much then fuck off! Go and work on something else! Just stop ruining the MCU!!!

Look, I have my differences with the LOTR movies, but you can see in every frame the sheer overwhelming love for the story that went into those movies. On genuinely every level. Every person involved with the production of those movies loved what they were doing and were working passionately, and it shows.
The disregard that leaks through parts of the MCU, two of the new Star Trek movies, and the new Star Wars trilogy really is baffling to me. So many people love these franchises and would have lovingly poured their heart and soul into them. And filmmakers who just didn’t care were handed these films?? Imagine what we could have gotten if actual fans had been allowed to make these movies.
Oh wait, I don’t have to imagine. People who love these franchises and these characters put their tiny amounts of free time and overwhelming effort into producing fanfiction and fanart for these characters every day. I could go on AO3 right now and in half a dozen clicks get sweeping, beautiful, poetic treatises on the human condition written through these ‘Verses. Vast arrays of adventures starring these characters, and the characters themselves would be lovingly adored by their writers. I could enjoy content made by people who care.
These directors and producers don’t deserve to be handed these franchises and they don’t deserve the paychecks they receive for half-assing their way through them. Not when fans produce outstanding content every day for free, just out of passion alone. This is ridiculous, can Hollywood please start putting people who actually care about the characters in charge of the movies? Please? I promise I’ll go back to buying movie tickets if I think the characters will be treated fairly by their narratives.
That explains why, despite my incredible geekiness, I’ve been meh about seeing these movies. The contempt showed.

What Russos and JJ did was speaking VOLUMES about them. A professional, even if they HATED something, would sit down, analyze the thing they got and try to make a good story out of what they had. Russos and JJ by not doing it, by letting their “I don’t like it/them” rule over them, makes them come out as incredibly fucking unprofessional.

Bringing this post back because I wanna talk about it more.
Read an article in the local paper submitted anonymously by a woman who got a DUI two years ago.
My first instinct was to hate her. Because I hate drinking and driving. Viscerally. Anyone who knows me knows how intense I can be about impaired driving of all kinds (drunk, high, tired). It’s not worth it. It gets people killed. I lost a good friend to a drunk driver. Don’t ever. I’ve gotten in fights with people! I have stolen keys!
“Don’t ever” was, in fact, the point of her writing it. But not because of the danger posed to others. Because of how much a single DUI had ruined her life for two straight years. This also didn’t garner much sympathy from me, because obviously the REAL reason not to drink and drive is because you could kill someone. What do I care if someone irresponsible is inconvenienced?
Anyway, this woman was pulled over after leaving a bar where she had two beers to drive a few blocks to her friend’s place. This didn’t really make me more sympathetic because I’m a hardass when it comes to drinking and driving, but she wasn’t pulled over for any kind of impaired driving. She was driving perfectly. It was clearly the kind of stop that happens late at night when the cops are just fishing. The cop made up something about her stickers being placed wrong or a faulty light, before making her take the normal physical impairment tests (as someone with dyspraxia these scare the shit out of me, but that’s neither here nor there) which she passed just fine. In fact, her driving was perfect, her reactions were perfect. But then came the breathalyzer. And her blood alcohol was just too high.
She got arrested.
And the rest of article was her detailing her attempts since to try to get her license back.
The for profit companies she had to take classes from, the for profit companies who make you pay to install the breathalyzer in your car, how if you are able to plead poverty to get aid for that installation you also have to commit to going once a month to a for profit company that will calibrate your discounted breathalyzer and how if you don’t go your car will get remotely bricked and how the pandemic interrupted the hours of these places without notice meaning her car needed to be towed when she missed an appointment after the place was closed when she expected it to be open, how this added to her sentence, how she lost her insurance.
As I read this, I thought, sure, about how much I hate drunk driving. About my knee-jerk, visceral lack of sympathy. And I asked myself:
Does any of this actually make me feel safer?
And it doesn’t. It doesn’t make me feel any safer at all. This woman was writing this article to say “Don’t drink and drive. Not even once. It’s not worth it.” But what I got from it was, these punitive measures aren’t preventing people from drinking and driving. They’re just… giving cops and for-profits fun new ways to mistreat and exploit normal people. People we, people I personally, can feel disinclined to protect because of judgments we have about them.
Meanwhile, people are still going to drink and drive.
And I thought about what would work. What would make me feel safer. And you know what would make me feel safer? If people who hadn’t planned ahead could still get a ride home. I’d much rather someone call the police (or a service that’s one of the many we institute to replace them) and go “I drove here but I don’t think I’m safe to drive home” and have the reply be “someone will be right there”. Then a pair of public servants show up, one to drive you home and one to drive your car home, and you get home safe.
I would love for traffic safety to be, like, the actual goal of how we manage traffic laws.
But more than that, punitive attempts to control people, blatant disproven behaviorism, doesn’t work. If your political philosophy is about finding the “bad” or “undeserving” and ensuring they struggle, I can’t identify with it. It’s hard to come up with a type of “common crime” that I have more disdain for than drinking and driving, but disapproving of the way this woman has been treated is not the same as justifying her actions. I don’t care! I don’t care if she learns her lesson! I don’t care if I like her! Everything you’re doing to her for a single breathalyzer failure is not keeping the roads safer!
The moment she failed the breathalyzer, you should’ve just given her a ride. That’s all I need.

They drill “no taxation without representation” into our heads like it’s why the country exists… and then omit the fact that allllllll of those people pay taxes and have no say in their government.
I don’t know how y’all don’t know this but those places DO have Congressional representation in the House of Representatives. Yes it’s fucked up that they don’t have senate representation because they are not states, but they all have representatives in the house.
Puerto Rican and Political Science major here. I don’t know much about Guam and the other territories. PR has a “Resident Commissioner in Washington”. Yes, she does have a voice, but she does not have a vote. Regardless of whether she’s a good politician or not and whether she does her job right, her being there is not nearly enough.
She can only speak and try to convince government officials, congress members, who have a vote to legislate in PR’s favor. And they seldom listen. And when they do listen, most times, it’s because whatever she’s saying works in THEIR favor, not PR’s. Jeniffer González isn’t really our representation. She’s there, but she can’t do anything.
Also, making the territories states won’t fix this. I feel like it’s the ultimate realization of colonialism for the colonies to end up joining their oppressor’s nation. The situation is complicated and beyond messed up, but please don’t forget to take the people who live in the territories’ opinion on these matters.
Puerto Rico had a referendum in 2020 in which people voted on whether we wanted to become a state or not (the referendum was useless because there was no legal backing to it. Regardless of the outcome, since the US didn’t have to act based on the results, it didn’t do anything), and 48% of voters voted against statehood, while 52% voted for it.
Now, statehood may have won this referendum, but only 54% of registered electors even showed up to vote. There were a lot of questions raised about the legitimacy of a vote in which barely half of the electors even showed up to vote, and how this single question vote didn’t include other options, like independence.
Please think about the territories and our struggle to be seen or heard. The US like to think of itself as this perfect nation that brings democracy and representation to other countries, but this has been happening for centuries, and no one seems to see it.
