Tumblr Migration 2: Reddit Boogaloo

We all know about the Twitter immigrants, but there seems to be radio silence on what's happening now with Reddit users from certain subreddits doing a similar thing.

What's happening?

Reddit is restricting their API later this month and killing off third-party apps. An AMA (Ask Me Anything) with the CEO Steve Hoffman was held and it was clear that he would continue with the changes.

In protest, thousands of subreddits across the site are planning to go dark for 48 hours on June 12th. Some are planning to continue indefinitely until the changes are reversed.

Okay, so how does this affect Tumblr?

Some subreddits (mainly queer and left-leaning meme ones, don't worry too much about Reddit Atheists™ overrunning us) are encouraging their users to jump ship to our beloved - and beloathed - hellsite. There will be another influx of new users and many will be unfamiliar with how the site works.

What do us Tumblr users do?

Show them how to use the site; introduce them to the site's culture, tell them to reblog shit and curate their dashboard. Sorta like how we welcomed Twitter users back when they flocked here. Kungpowpenising optional.

I'm new from Reddit, what do I do here?

CHANGE YOUR PROFILE PICTURE AND BANNER TO SOMETHING OTHER THAN DEFAULT BECAUSE THIS SITE IS FILLED WITH BOTS AND YOU MIGHT BE MISTAKEN FOR ONE. This is the FIRST thing you should do after getting a blog.

Other folks can help you with stuff like curating your dashboard or creating sideblogs (or you can look shit up) but please, PLEASE just give yourself an icon and reblog some stuff so people don't mistake you for a bot

Best Laid Plans

Several months ago, an anon asked me to write a piece in which the group tries to play matchmaker for Ruby and Penny. This is what that turned into. 

Ruby liked Vacuo better than she’d thought she would. Sure, it was unbearably hot most days and a fair amount of the locals seemed rather disgruntled about having more refugees around, especially Atlesian ones,  but she’d take this over Atlas any day.

She was especially relived that she and her group had been allowed to enroll as students at Shade Academy rather than having their Huntsmen licenses renewed. They hadn’t been at all ready for the position when General Ironwood had offered it to them, and while there was still a lot to worry about, everyone was glad to have some of the pressure taken off of them. Unfortunately, however, the lowered stress and extra free time had given them an opportunity to concern themselves with things that absolutely did not require their attention, such as Ruby’s love life.

Sometimes I wonder whether V7’s lack of an intense emotional reaction to reuniting with a presumed dead friend is because they were saving that for a more important reunion later down the line. Wouldn’t be the first time CRWBY cut down on some of the emotions of a scene to save that impact for later. Apparently during the Bumbleby hug at the beginning of V9 the animators almost included what looked like a little head kiss but kept it out due to the real kiss coming up.

So maybe they’re saving Ruby’s tears and “I missed you”s and “never scare me like that again”s for when she finally has Penny back for good.

May I add to this? It’s also the case for V8 when Penny crashes down in front of the Schnee manor and Ruby finds her. In the show Ruby’s face is hidden - but she was PLANNED to have a reaction on display in the OG storyboards. It was removed on purpose for what I think is what you wrote about. Whole sequence below

Fantastic addition. This is strike two on removing strong reactions from Ruby over something relating to Penny and I feel like it’s because her feelings toward Penny are going to be emphasized a lot in V10. In the case of this specific instance, Ruby being afraid for Penny and worrying over her, this is something we’ve seen both before and after this scene, but if this was Penny’s last volume alive, I feel like they could’ve kept this in, unless they’re planning more of this in the future (like Ruby fretting during the revival process/becoming extremely protective due to the trauma of losing Penny twice) and they decided this little reaction was unnecessary because they’re going to be putting these feelings on display again in the future and wanted to save some of it. 

Interestingly, we've also already seen an extreme reaction from Ruby on anything regarding Penny's safety - fainting at the very first episode of V9.

And I'd say that hadn't fully paid off yet. More significant reactions will be coming from Ruby.

Honestly I think getting together would be really, really beneficial for both Ruby and Penny’s characters once they work past some initial angst in V10 (I can’t see them waiting any longer than V10 to bring Penny back)

Penny would be the constant reminder of hope and happiness that Ruby needs to never lose her way again. Someone to look at and think “this is why I’m fighting”.

Ruby would be the constant reminder Penny needs that she has things to live for and she should never throw her life away again. Someone to look at and think “nothing is worth giving this up”.

Nuts n Dolts started out as just a really cute ship dynamic, but I think it’s turned into something incredibly important. I think it’s something that both characters need. And I think it’s the direction we’re moving in, given the emphasis on Penny and Ruby’s relationship in recent volumes.
