None Of You Know What Haiku Are

I'm going to preface this by saying that i am not an expert in ANY form of poetry, just an enthusiast. Also, this post is... really long. Too long? Definitely too long. Whoops! I love poetry.

If you ask most English-speaking people (or haiku-bot) what a haiku is, they would probably say that it's a form of poetry that has 3 lines, with 5, and then 7, and then 5 syllables in them. That's certainly what I was taught in school when we did our scant poetry unit, but since... idk elementary school when I learned that, I've learned that that's actually a pretty inaccurate definition of haiku. And I think that inaccurate definition is a big part of why most people (myself included until relatively recently!) think that haiku are kind of... dumb? unimpressive? simple and boring? I mean, if you can just put any words with the right number of syllables into 3 lines, what makes it special?

Well, let me get into why the 5-7-5 understanding of haiku is wrong, and also what makes haiku so special (with examples)!

I actually really like the thing when you're starting to get the hang of a new language, enough to understand and say simple sentences but you gotta get creative to get more complex thoughts across, like a puzzle. I remember a time in the restortation school when a classmate who wasn't natively finnish and did her best anyway dropped something and sighed, telling me "every day is monday this week. I have had four mondays this week." And I understood.

I don't think I speak much of spanish anymore, but in the nursing school training period I did there, I did manage to get by with making weird Tarzan sentences. I got a nosebleed at some point and startled another nurse. Not knowing the words "humidity" or "stress", I managed to string together: "This is ok. It is hot, it is cold, I have a bad day, I am sad, I have blood. This is normal for me." And she understood.

And sometimes you just say things weird, but it's better than not saying it. One time, I was stuck in a narrow hallway behind someone walking really slowly with a walker, and he apologised for being in the way. I was not in any hurry, but didn't know the spanish word for "hurry", but I did know enough words to try to circumvent it by borrowing the english "I have all the time in the world."

The man burst into one of those cackling old man laughters that they do when something in this world still manages to surprise them. He had to be somewhere between 70 and a 100 years old, and I guess if there was one thing he wasn't expecting to hear today, it would be a random blond vaguely baltic-looking fuck casually announce that he is the sole owner and keeper of the very concept of time.

I hate it when people defend fic by insisting that it is, or can be, better than published fiction. Fic can be very good, but it is a whole different genre, and really good fic never tries to be like published, or even publishable fiction.

Case in point, I recently read a story that absolutely floored me with the strength of its characterisation, dialogue, and sheer vision. It was a deliberate riff on the concept of Omelas, fitting a new narrative into the imagery of darkness and light, of solitary suffering under a joyful city. It engaged with the problem of evil and the difficulty of not only building a just society, but also ensuring it actually remained just in the face of serious pressure over time. It made me feel things I haven’t felt since I was eighteen and heavily overidentified with Alyosha Karamazov.

But I can’t share this brilliant gem of a story with anyone I know irl because it also has three scenes of Optimus Prime getting vigorously dicked in the dorsal access port, whatever that is.

my favorite characters are the ones that are introduced to a new seasons or a sequel whose entire purpose is to sink a very popular ship. i love the carnage. i love the despair. i love to see the hope vanish from peoples hearts. yes this post is about yona. i love her. shes one of my favorite totk characters just because i get to see people suffer because of her.

For Me fundamentally no good omens televisual adaptation can live up to whatever i was imagining reading fanfiction on livejournal when i was 14. also fundamentally it cannot live up to terry pratchett even when they lift his lines verbatim and slot them into somehow overly wry narration. these beliefs gird me against discourse though not against Posting About It

no-one on this website has ever actually watched black mirror they just assume its a still frame of the “thomas edison was a witch” image for 90 minutes and then project all their opinions of it onto that

The people who learned about the CIA abstract expressionism thing and RAN with it because it confirmed their existing biases against modern art are some of the dumbest on the internet.

Like your brain is inoperable.

Tumblr user posts about gender, Tumblr user likes abstract expressionism, abstract expression is CIA mind control (citation needed), ergo gender is CIA mind control. This is a whole new level of unwell.

(*400dB Crunch noise*)

Fun fact! Decibel is a logarithmic scale. This means an increase of 10 dB is a doubling in strength.

It's impossible to get a sound louder than about 200 dB on Earth: this is because a soundwave is a series of peaks and troughs of air compression, and around 200 dB you hit COMPLETE VACUUM in the troughs.

So, decibels are a measure of energy.. 400 dB is around 10^28. By the Atomic Rockets Boom Table, the dinosaur-killer impact was merely 10^23.

400 dB is "all the oceans flash boil off the planet and then the crust melts". This rabbit just destroyed all life on earth with a noise equivalent to an exaton of TNT. Aliens on pluto are getting woken up going "what the fuck was that light?"

an internal memo leaked from ceo steve huffman saying the "noise" of the blackout will die out and they just need to weather it until we give up. fuck you spez.

first of all it's OVER EIGHT THOUSAND subreddits that went dark.

second of all he clearly doesn't give one single shit about the users or the UNPAID army of mods who slog through a million miles of shit every day to keep illegal and offensive content off the site (i'm a mod in a small fandom subreddit and even the shit i've seen is beyond the pale) and therefore make it appealing to the advertizers.

you have no fucking business without us. and you don't care one single bit about it.

he clearly did not mean for this memo to leak, but someone at reddit thought it was important enough to send it out anyway. please spread it (spreddit?) especially because so much of reddit is still in blackout.

for what its worth, similar to how i dislike how most positivity for bi women is focused on their attraction to men specifically, i dont relate my identity to men as a bi lesbian and dont want it reduced to that because my relation to other women is more important to me

I Don't care what we've said in our posts, woman come No 1. We all owe our lives to wemon.

and also at the same time, what i do and what i identify as is no one elses business, and i am not going to MAKE it anyones business. my choice of how i present myself does not singlehandedly rewrite an identity and a label for every single fucking person, i am not responsible for misogynists expecting sex from lesbians because they will do that anyway, since they are misogynists

while i say that my identity does not extend to anyone else and i will never argue that anyone has to follow it, that lesbians have a right to exclude men from their relationships, i do expect the same fucking courtesy to do whatever the fuck i want without it being a hot topic on whether im singlehandedly killing the lesbian community from the inside by fucking a femboy.

in all the talk about how "bi lesbians are redefining lesbianism to include men", you seem to miss the point that most of us arent enforcing or insisting anything like that beyond a personal level. meanwhile you seem to be really fucking insistent that what were doing is wrong

- signed, a bi lesbian who isnt fucking dating men anyway

Some people in fandom desperately need to become obsessed with something SUPER niche and obscure. Something with like 10 active fans at the very most. Something with only 6 fics if you're very lucky, all but one written by the same dedicated fan. Something where when you do find a fan account, it's been innactive for years. Something that's not available on streaming and its only physical release was never released in your country. Let it humble you.

god my favorite part of knitting/crocheting/etc is watching string become fabric. crumpling it in my hands. this fabric would’ve never existed had I not willed it into being. it isn’t fabric, it’s time made physical. made material. isn’t that the high of crafting? you mold time between your hands and put it into other people’s hands. my least favorite part is when my cat tries to cram the whole yarn ball into his mouth

Been thinking about Razma as a younger adventurer and gunslinger in the muddled owlbear fantasy setting that we've created for several of our abandoned ttrpg characters, and I'm really having fun with it. The central location is a coastal city named Port Emmerledge, choked with smugglers and noble families rife with teiflings from old dealings with devils, situated squarely between ancient elf forests and mermaid infested waters.
