ace attorney really is just like. haha look at this slapstick comedy game about gay lawyers — listen to me. your abusers don't define you. you may find your mannerisms or appearance or name still reflect your past with them but you can make the conscious decision to become better than how they left you. it can be very hard to recover but if you rely on people you trust and who trust you in return you can make it through. it's okay to grieve, even the things you thought were your fault. sometimes things aren't your fault. sometimes they are. taking accountability for things you've done can hurt but it can also strengthen you and the people around you. so, what's your opinion on stepladders, huh?

YOU WILL PLAY GHOST TRICK: PHANTOM DETECTIVE (coming soon to Nintendo Switch)

THIS IS A THREAT.

Seriously if you’re a fan of Ace Attorney (or other visual novel games), you need to play Ghost Trick. It’s the best story Shu Takumi has ever written and it has the Best Dog in all of video games (I realize this is a very high bar but you’ll understand if you play the game).

Look at him. He’s perfect.

Vanitas no Carte was made for queer people. Women with swords and big weapons? Men with long hair? The true enemy is the institutions/government?? One of the main characters has a dangling earring? The other main lead is a kind gentleman with a cat? Found family? Everyone seems to be a little in love with one another? Color coded chara designs? Everyone is a drama queen? Do you really think this was made for the cishets?????

How could I forget the fact that everyone is traumatized and has family issues

At core, VnC has a heavy theme of liminality and in-betweenness. It can be seen in the figure of the Vampire itself, which has often been related to the concept of liminality (see Lundberg & Geerlings 2017 for example), but also in the main cast: every character in the main cast is in some way marginalized, or an outsider, or a "Monster" to the eyes of the vampire society, finding themselves in a state of "in-betweenness" that defies their societal norms and challenges the authorities around them or the expectations of how they should be/behave. From Vanitas, who sits at the crux between human, vampire and chasseur and represents the "monster" of red-moon vampires, to Noé, a vampire raised by humans and kept away from the main vampire society and last heir of a particular vampire clan, to the existence of the mixed-race Dhampires, the main cast of VnC is marked as Other, filled with outsiders that navigate the world of vampires and humans while living in the margins of it, in the crux between defined identities. Not only is this a particularly appropriate choice for a story about vampires (re: liminal creatures) but it also means that VnC is a story that can be related to queer theory - as in the challenging and transgression of social norms. In this essay, I will
