are biotics considered neurodivergent?
Interesting question!
I have no expertise when it comes to neuroscience, but my assumption is that a biotic implant would not change the way a brain develops or operates. What a biotic implant even does is unclear; I’ve written it as basically functioning like a junction box between the amp and the human body: it tells the amp when the biotic needs more power, and talks to the nervous system to activate eezo nodes and generate a field. Is that at all plausible? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ That’s why they call it science fiction, ha.
But while implants can canonically cause neurological damage, I think the notion that they could create neurodivergent thinking when it did not previously exist, or alter neurodivergent thinking if it did previously exist, would be unlikely. But! I am going to phone a friend who knows a lot more about brains than I do! @onionjuggler - do you have any thoughts?
The short answer is no. There is nothing in canon to support the notion that biotic humans are inherently neurodivergent, and being able to move things with your mind does not meet the definition of neurodivergent.
The longer and somewhat boring answer is that implant surgery could result in neurodivergence. I believe that the surgery tends to occur in adolescents, so the brain has mostly developed the way it’s going to develop by that point, ND or not. However, brain damage caused in surgery or by a migrating implant could result in someone being neurodivergent, but the biotics didn’t cause that, surgical intervention did.
The very long and more creative answer gets at something that has bothered me about biotics and their implants from the start. Basically, despite rumors otherwise, we use all the cells in our brain, and all the cells in our brain have a purpose. There is no section of the brain waiting for some new purpose, like creating pockets of gravity with the help of an amp. In order for biotics to work, they would have to co-opt already exciting circuits. This is possible–the brain is plastic– and it’s even more possible during childhood. No matter how biotics work, part of training would be reinforcing those neural circuits for their new task.
So, could the intrinsic rewiring of the brain required to be able to use biotics cause biotic kids to become neurodivergent? Probably not. But maybe. Everyone’s brain is different, so it could also be that some are ND and some aren’t. If you wanted to write them that way, knock yourself out.
I’ve thought of another more creative answer. Biotics are caused by eezo exposure in the womb, right? In normal brain development, babies make more neurons than they need. The excess neurons get pruned during baby’s first year of life. With biotics, some population of neurons could now be gravity-sensitive. They won’t get pruned because they are making connections and doing… Something. However, the architecture doesn’t exist in the brain to support a random population of neurons with a new function. Not a problem– like I said, the brain is plastic, a baby’s brain particularly so, and it will make space for them.
This could result in a neurodivergent person. For example, and I’m definitely not up to date on my autism neuroscience research so forgive me if this idea has been thrown out in the last five years, but some theories of autism include more connections between neurons, possibly less pruning, and possibly less clearly delineated functional areas of the brain. These “extra” connections have been proposed to be involved in sensory overstimulation for example, or for why autistic people are more likely to be synesthetic.
So, could this population of odd gravity-sensitive neurons make it more likely for biotics to grow up neurodivergent? Sure! Why not!

One of the best letters I’ve ever seen just popped up on my Facebook memories. Still makes me laugh.
As today is the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, it’s a great time to revisit Dinah from Devon’s memory of this historic event. And yes, still makes me laugh.
Today is the 54th anniversary of the moon landing, but Dinah’s diary entry is still absolutely magnificent.

My favorite piece of tumblr linguistics to ever come out of this site is “the horrors”. It’s delightfully evocative and also gives absolutely no information about what I’m talking about. “Sorry I can’t go out today I’m facing the horrors” am I talking about the encroaching dread and existential despair of our dystopian world? am I talking about the fact that I have to wash dishes? No one knows. It’s all horrors.
