Just found all of my old suicide notes. The most recent being from August 31st. Wow. It’s kinda funny because my friend explained suicide notes to me one day.

“People who write suicide notes don’t want to die.”

“What makes you say that?”

“That means you have someone or something to live for. And that’s a good enough reason to be alive. Every person you’re apologizing to in that note was worthy of appearing on it, so they should be worthy for you to live for them too.”

“That doesn’t mean I don’t want to die…”

“So why are you alive?”

“-silence-”

“I’ve made my point. When you have no one to apologize to,…or any last regards to anyone or anything,..then you are ready to die. But if the slightest flash of someone’s persona is in your head before you do it. Don’t do it. You’re robbing yourself of that person…and that, love, isn’t fair to you or them in the slightest.”

I think the best piece of character design advice I ever received was actually from a band leadership camp I attended in june of 2017.

the speaker there gave lots of advice for leaders—obviously, it was a leadership camp—but his saying about personality flaws struck me as useful for writers too.

he said to us all “your curses are your blessings and your blessings are your curses” and went on to explain how because he was such a great speaker, it made him a terrible listener. he could give speeches for hours on end and inspire thousands of people, but as soon as someone wanted to talk to him one on one or vent to him, he struggled with it.

he had us write down our greatest weakness and relate it to our biggest strength (mine being that I am far too emotional, but I’m gentle with others because I can understand their emotions), and the whole time people are sharing theirs, my mind was running wild with all my characters and their flaws.

previously, I had added flaws as an after thought, as in “this character seems too perfect. how can I make them not-like-that?” but that’s not how people or personalities work. for every human alive, their flaws and their strengths are directly related to each other. you can’t have one without the other.

is your character strong-willed? that can easily turn into stubbornness. is your character compassionate? maybe they give too many chances. are they loyal? then they’ll destroy the world for the people they love.

it works the other way around too: maybe your villain only hates the protagonist’s people because they love their own and just have a twisted sense of how to protect them. maybe your antagonist is arrogant, but they’ll be confident in everything they do.

tl;dr “your curses are your blessings, and your blessings are your curses” there is no such thing as a character flaw, just a strength that has been stretched too far.

black & white p.h part 2

  • I’m so sorry this took so long!!! I was having a bit of trouble figuring out what I wanted to do next, but I’ve got it planned out and I’m pretty excited!
  • And much love to everyone who showed love toward the first part, I’m so blown away
  • swearing, underage drinking, kind of boring lolol

Y/n had retreated home and wept that night. She curled beneath her duvet, feet still clad in her mud-coated keds as she wept. Her school bag was partially slung over her shoulder, peaking out from beneath the blanket. She wretched out sobs until she was dry-heaving, her stomach and throat becoming overworked to the point of illness. As the weeping subsided, thoughts of suffocating herself beneath the floral pattern became more apparent.

It was nearly impossible for the girls mother to not overhear the cries. The women pushed no effort in inquiries, and simply sent her daughter back to bed the following Friday morning. “Just because” she had waved off her questioning, giving no evidence of how aware she was of the previous nights sorrow.

Patrick, the polar opposite, had bragged. He boasted on and on about the pretty-faced girl who had stared up at him as if he had stepped out of Nightmare On Elm Street. The look of fear she had given him was nothing short of enthralling, and the thought of having his very own person was just as thrilling. He was well aware of the fact that no, she couldn’t just toss a shoe- or book- or whatever at him if he got too handsy for her liking. In Patrick’s eyes, as usual, he held the upper hand in the situation.

Friday he’d planned for a second round of intimidation. The hellion thrived off of other’s fear, and, lord, a hot girl paired with trembling hands and tearful eyes got him off like nothing else. However, his manic plans fell short upon discovering the girl’s absence. Excitement became annoyance in just the first half of school, which then faded into vexation in realizing he lacked as much as her name.

His soulamte was, at the time, nothing but a fleeting figure to him. He had zero ties with her, unknowing of her friends, or classes, he was at a loss and it was infuriating.

As hours passed the pairs rivaling emotions mellowed out. Word of an upperclassman’s house party spread quickly to each of them, sparking up an interest. In a thoughtless moment of sleep-clouded judgement, y/n clawed herself from the safety beneath her sheets and in front of her closet.

Her phone, still perched on her messy bedding, vibrated relentlessly with text messages from her friends, all of which discussing the details of the night to come.

__

The chaos of the crowd was a jumbled mix of stoners, preps, and everything in between. It was verging on overwhelming, certainly a fire hazard at that point. The entire block reeked of motor oil and cheap liquor, fogs of engine smoke wafting over the lawn.

It was a classic Derry High party. It resided in a somewhat dilapidated colonial house, colored lights shining through the windows and 90s rap destroying every occupants ear drums. Beat down pick-up trucks were jam packed in the yard, a particular car stuck out amongst the crowd. It’s headlights were mere inches from the living room window of the house, the infamous feminine name seeming to be present in the air around it- giving off a vibe of pure trouble.

Y/n, in dire need of a drink, brushed off the nerves the car gave her and stuffed her hands further into the pockets of her jean jacket while advancing toward the wide open front door. Her footsteps were canceled out completely, her entrance going utterly unnoticed amongst the drunk mass.

She let her eyes pass quickly over each teens face, a subconscious search for the boy who’s friends car was parked obnoxiously close to the house. Their lines of sight met quickly, y/n staring down the boy she feared with a look of apathy, his eyes showing the very same. Her face and stature were clearly devoid of the fear that had plagued her the previous day, and was now replaced with evident disregard. Patrick didn’t like that, not one bit.

Hockstetter sat perched on the back rest of the grotesquely colored sofa, his filthy boots pressing into the cushions. A cigarette hung loosely from the corner of his mouth as he ignored every word emitting from his drunken, mullet headed friend. Instead, his focus remained on his apparent soulmate.

The girl was first to shy away, her eyes darting to the door of the kitchen. She dodged his gaze as she poured herself a plastic cup of grotty smelling alcohol. First a small sip, and then she was downing cup after cup.

The night when on as so. She dodged Patrick’s glances as if they would kill her, the aforementioned boy chain smoking steadily, causing a cloud to form around him as if he were Pig-Pen. Neither made a move to advance on one another, and it seemed it would stay that way.

But the crowd was thinning and so was the space between them. Patrick grew bored, the nights entertainment either crammed in the backseat of a friend’s car or passed out drunk on the floor. Therefore, his mind was made and he began to cruise through the home in search of his jean jacket-clad girl.

He found her in the second parlor of the home, her legs tossed against the arm rest of the couch, back against the seat as she chatted idly with a girl adorning a ginger bob. The redhead spotted him before y/n, to which she quickly excused herself to the bathroom and left the soulmates to themselves.

Y/n looked at Patrick, who had adjusted himself to lean against the doorframe, with an odd mix of curiosity and annoyance as she sat up. “I have to say,” patrick murmured, pausing to take a drag from his half smoked cigarette. “I’m not too much of a fan of hide and seek.”

The girl before him scoffed and let herself fall back against the couch once again. “Excuse me?” She regretted her tone halfway through the phrase, knowing standing up to Patrick typically didn’t end well for those who dared.

Rather than upbraiding her, Patrick let his eyes roll before stepping back from the doorframe. His boots clanked noisily agasint the wood paneled flooring. “You’ve been hiding from me, didn’t even say hello. Kinda hurt my feelings, sweetheart.” His words were verging on being compelling; his voice was silky smooth and deep, sounding of something that belonged to a man much elder than him. It was the slurring of his words and the way he ended them before he should’ve that made his speech ugly- and how half the words to leave his lips were utmostly vile.

Y/n debated her response for several quiet moments with her tongue stretching the inside of her cheek. Opting for silence, she awaited his next move. She’d be lying if she claimed she wasn’t nervous, feeling her heartbeat drumming in her cheeks as her hands began to fidget. Don’t be a pussy. Her subconscious barked. Do. Not.

Her eyes watched his raven hair shift as he tilted his head to the side. “Why are you so goddamn quiet?” His question was more of a mumble, not meant for her to hear, as he let his cigarette fall to the floor- the the heel of his boot subduing the smoke. “Come hang out. Being in here all alone’ll be a bore.”

“I’m waiting for someone.” She huffed, referring to the redhead from earlier.

“She’s not coming back.”

“How do you know that?” Y/n challenged.

“Because I fuckin’ said so”

Making no move to disagree, her legs fell from the arm rest of the couch as she stood. Patrick gave a wry smile, gesturing his hand back toward his three usual friends, surrounded by a group of ten or so tag alongs. “They don’t bite.” He mused, earning an eye roll.

Y/n learned quickly that the Bowers Gang did, in fact, bite. Maybe not particularly with their teeth, but they picked and taunted at each other as if there were no other topics up for discussion; as if it were the only language they spoke. Henry- without a doubt- was the worst of it, his sexist jokes spewing from his intoxicated mouth relentlessly.

Her annoyance was growing as the group around her grew more shit-faced, excluding Patrick, who hadn’t touched anything beside nicotine for the last several hours. The boy didn’t speak, the only sign that he was even really there being the occasional snicker.

Victor Criss, who has previously been sat criss-cross on the floor, stood up with an empty solo cup. He was drunk, not black-out like his friends, but enough to leave him stumbling. “Gonna get a drink, want anything?” The bleach blonde asked politely, his eyes hazy as they bounced around the room. “Uh, sure- actually I’ll come with you.” Y/n took her chance of a escape and leaped from the shredded cushions; Patrick oblivious to her departure.

The kicthen fridge was like a chemistry lab to the boy. He sorted through tackily designed bottles as he poured his concoction, occasionallyleabinh sickly colored stains on the countertop. She watched his movements in slight interest, wondering if he knew what he was doing, or just guessing.

“So,” he hiccuped, taking a swing of his drink, earning a pair of arched eye brows. “What’s brown and stick-y?” Victor pulled himself to sit on the countertop and peered at the stranger accompanying him. She blinked back at him for a moment, unable to figure out if it was a joke or a serious question.

“I dunno.” Her shoulders lifted in an awkward shrug, her eyes darting to her abandoned cup beside her feet. On the counter, Victor began to giggle, soft and almost unintelligible, but enough to bring a smile on her tense features. “A stick.” He deadpanned before laughing again.

It wasn’t until the laughter spewed from her lips that she realized how drunk she was. The pair laughed for what felt like hours, not a result of the horrible google-search joke, but from the buzz the liquor had gifted them with.

Their moment was watched closely by a deeply irked Patrick Hockstetter, who began to feel rather possessive over the girl he’d only just became accustomed to. The boiling in his chest was something he was unused to, pin prickles that he detested; he couldn’t pick an exact word for it- no, not one he’d ever felt before. In moments he was rising from his seat, advancing quickly on the giggling pair.

This is the next move to restore net neutrality

If it feels like you’re fighting battles on every side, you’re not alone. The struggle is terrifyingly real. But we can still make this year the best possible version of 2018 it can be. There’s a new opportunity to restore strong net neutrality protections: The Congressional Review Act.

What is the Congressional Review Act?

The CRA lets the House and Senate repeal administrative laws—rules and regulations set by governmental agencies—with a simple majority in both houses. The resolutions can’t be blocked by leadership, amended, or filibustered.

This congress has used the CRA more than any other to overturn regulations that protect vulnerable people and the environment, but this time we can use it for a good purpose—to reverse the FCC’s decision and restore net neutrality.

We just need #OneMoreVote

Battle For The Net has secured commitments from 50 senators. One more and we can take this fight to the House. These are the targets:

  • John Kennedy (Louisiana) | 202-224-4623 | Email
  • John McCain (Arizona) | 202-224-2235 | Email
  • Orrin Hatch (Utah) | 202-224-5251 | Email
  • Dean Heller (Nevada) | 202-224-6244 | Email

If you live in these states, we need you. Even if you don’t, you can still help the cause.

Go to battleforthenet.com to write or call your representatives.

Tell them to support the “Resolution of Disapproval” and overturn the FCC’s December 14 “Restoring Internet Freedom” vote.
